If not for the literary reputation of #rogerzelazny #zelazny I would've skipped this 2-for-1 #scifibook for its unassuming, almost generic cover and titles. However, I am pleasantly surprised even when my reading experience has been uncomfortable and/or frustrating at times. Let me explain: Today We Choose Faces: A proto #cyberpunkscifi with clever plot structure that has kept me guessing. It can be a challenging read because the prose doesn't do a lot of hand holding and only provides context clues. Some dated plot and character elements, and the ever-changing narrators' points of view confused me. Not only that, the story goes in one direction and then to another several times, like a feint within a feint (Oh, so it's cloning? Wait, it's a murder mystery? Uh, telepathy between clones like in Ann Leckie's "Ancillary Justice"? Etc). However, this is in keeping with the theme of the #scifinovel that is deliberate, leading to the third act that left me satisfied (didn't see it coming, but maybe others would). A lot of action similar to "Mission Impossible" (I think). Deserves a re-read and worth the mental acrobatics. Bridge of Ashes: This sequel has a more straightforward plot progression with the most unique introductory 'spacetime travel' narrative I've read so far that got me hooked, and the choice of context clues again makes it a lot less cheesy. An action-packed, more optimistic version of PKD's "Martian Time-Slip", with the boy character having a better support system and his journey going in unexpected #hardscifi directions. I have been skeptical with the unconventional literary style, but whatever dated flaws I have found later on only add to the vintage charm. Цитата про библиотеки супер, а вот насчёт самого романа “9 принцев Амбера” мнения среди меня разделились. С одной стороны книга мне очень понравилась, а с другой она полна несовместимых с жизнью недостатков. Как быть? Дилемма. “9ПА” первая книга серии про фантастический Амбер, где после смерти короля осталось девять принцев, которые теперь пытаются разобраться с властью. Амбер - ядро, главный мир, а есть ещё бесчисленное множество как бы воображаемых миров-отражений. И в Амбере, и в отражениях живут люди, для которых их мир реальный и единственный, и только члены королевской семьи знают о существовании отражений и могут перемещаться между ними и даже создавать их. Сначала о достоинствах. Книга лёгкая и живая, читается вмиг. Очень понравилась идея с отражениями. Особенная удача автора - принцип перехода: путешественник не столько перемещается из одного отражения в другое, сколько усилием мысли создаёт вокруг себя тот мир, в который желает попасть. Мощный философский посыл: сознание определяет бытие. Недостатки книги столь же массивные. Во-первых, основная интрига. Трон Амбера захватил брат главного героя, а ГГ хочет сам править, и вся книга о том, как он героически отвоёвывает у вроде как негодяя-брата то, что якобы принадлежит ему по праву. Вот только Желязны крайне неубедительно объясняет, с чего ГГ решил, что именно он должен царствовать, и чем плох брат. Из контекста получается, что они оба равноценные принцы, оба стремились к власти, брат просто первый до короны добежал. А кто первый, того и... И из рук вон плохо проработана волшебная сторона. Даже в фантастическом мире должны быть хоть какие-то основные ненарушаемые правила, а тут писатель их придумывает на ходу и то и дело непредсказуемо меняет. А, и батальные сцены. Убого. Другим словом не назовёшь. Впрочем, они на сюжет особо не влияют, их можно просто пролистнуть. Видите, книга и прекрасна, и ужасна, и не могу решить, чего больше. Итого: фифти-фифти. 5/10 ⭐

Желязни оповідає про моторошні речі, а гг твору здатні викликати щирий smile, ба навіть симпатію, попри те, що “ледь не кожний уплутаний в цю гру скоїв чимало злочинів”. Цей роман — попурі із колоритних образів готичної літ-ри. Тож приготуйтеся до зустрічі із графом 🧛♂️, Франкенштейном і Джеком Різником. 📓 просто кишить алюзіями на відомі твори - так 🇺🇸 письменник-фантаст вшанував своїх улюблених авторів. Місцями роман нагадує складне рівняння із невідомими та додатковими змінними. Головна інтрига: що це за Подія, після якої світ не буде таким, як раніше? Автор крок за кроком буде задовольняти й ін. читацьку цікавість: які гг “відчиняють”, а які “зачиняють”, хто на чиєму боці, а хто взагалі не у грі? З кожним днем жовтня ставки зростатимуть, а гра набуватиме небезпечних обертів. Спойлер: буде багато вбивств (ритуальних і не дуже). Тож присутність у творі 🕵️♂️ невипадкова. Найбільше у 📓 я зацінила опис незвичної дружби між 🐈 і 🐕. Чи залишаться вони друзями, коли доведеться стати по різні сторони барикад? І чи дійсно менше зло виправдане для попередження глобальної катастрофи?

For Throwback Thursday, here's a book randomly pulled from our bookshelf: Prince of Chaos, by Roger Zelazny. This is the tenth and last book in the Chronicles of Amber., following Merlin, son of Corwin. Amber was my first experience with a "multiverse" - though I don't remember that term being used back then. The superhuman princes and princesses of Amber freely walked between shadow worlds, all the while backstabbing each other (sometimes literally) while seeking power. I've always thought this would make an excellent TV series - it could be visually stunning, lots of interesting characters and intrigue. I didn't know that was even a possibility until I read the Wikipedia article. Then I found the article that says Stephen Colbert (a huge fantasy fan) has joined his production company, Spartina, with Robert Kirkman (Walking Dead) and his company Skybound Entertainment. October 30 Making my way through it, I discovered that the small stream which traversed his property had here been diverted to the extent of filling a little pool before it departed. Small, humped bridges crossed the stream, both the entering flow and the departing one. The ground had been cleared for some distance on both sides of it and covered with a layer of sand. A number of fairly large, mossy rocks were artfully disposed, yet in an almost casual-seeming fashion. The sand was raked in swirling patterns. A few low plants grew here and there about the area. Beside the largest of the rocks, facing east, Larry sat in a meditative posture, his eyes more than half-closed, his breathing barely discernible. The meal had had an almost elegiac quality to it, Jack having asked outright whether she'd consider switching, Jill having admitted to a conflict in her sympathies now, but being determined to play the Game through as she'd started.
