Spring break was nearly over. During her hiatus, with fewer early and late day obligations, my subject took advantage of the opportunity to ‘sleep, sleep, sleep.’ As someone with multiple professional roles, the amount of time available to rest is chronically limited. I write these words not only in empathy with my subject but as a fellow traveler. I could choose to stop right there but I would be remiss in our situational relationship not to consider a peek under the hood of this engine operating on all cylinders. After all, my subject is not merely communicating these words. She wants me to know this out of any number of possible considerations of mind and chooses to underscore the matter of sleep by repeating it three times. The ongoing theme of burdensome obligations and insufficient sleep often make uncomfortable bedfellows. In addition, sleep can function as another boundary, as #rogerzelazny notes above, that may carefully contain some heartbreak of the past. Tak jsem tady s druhým a třetím dílem Kronik Amberu. Pušky Avalonu. Náš hlavní hrdina Corwin jako zázrakem uteče z cely, kam ho nechal uvěznit jeho bratr Eric. Téměř celý tento díl se odehrává ve stínové zemi s názvem Lorraina. Zde nachází svého přítele Ganelona. Jeho cesta pokračuje přes všechny překážky dál až do Avalonu, kde chce sehnat zbraně. Jediné palné zbraně, které v Amberu fungují. Díky nim se chce pomstít a získat trůn pro sebe. Podaří se mu to? A koho po cestě potká? Za mne drobek čtivější než první díl. Již jsme se trochu zorientovali. Víme co čekat. Na druhou stranu zase více rozvláčné. Dějově se toho moc neděje. Corwin postupuje z jednoho stínu do druhého, aby našel vytoužený Avalon. Nebo aspoň jemu hodně podobný stín. Akční a nudné scény se hodně střídají. Hodnocení:⭐⭐⭐,5/5 Zároveň vám představím i díl třetí. S názvem Znamení jednorožce. Corwin se ujal vlády nad Amberem. Dva bratři přišli při boji o život. Corwin zjišťuje, že jeho bratr Brandon je uvězněný ve věži. Společně se všemi zbývajícími sourozenci se ho rozhodne zachránit. Kdo ale za tím vším stojí? A bude záchrana skutečnou záchranou, nebo se Brandona pokusí někdo při této akci zabít? Tak tohle byl zatím nejvíc akční díl. Dokonce mne i nejvíce bavil. Taková malinko detektivka. Komu můžeme věřit a komu naopak ne? I tak musím říct, že je knihy jsou psané zastaralejším stylem. Na svou dobu to musela být pecka, ale dneska už to takové kouzlo bohužel nemá. Svět je skvělé promyšlený. Ale na mne až moc rozvleklý děj .Autor jen prodlužuje nevyhnutelné menšími epizodami. Za mne by bylo lepší napsat jednu knihu od začátku do konce než rozvíjet nepotřebné příběhy a vyplňovat děj vatou. Hl. hrdina Corwin se probouzí po nehodě v nemocnici. Zjišťuje, že tu ale něco sakra nehraje. Proč mu lékaři píchají injekce, které ho mají oblbmout? A proč má obě dvě zdravé nohy v sádře? Rozhodne se tedy jednat a utéct. Naštěstí při útěku natrefí na kancelář ředitele. Ten mu, i když ne moc ochotně, poskytne adresu jeho sestry. Corwin se tedy vydává k ní domů v naději, že mu pomůže vzpomenout si. Nebude to ale tak jednoduché. Musí si před ní dávat pozor a hlavně nemůže prozradit, že si nic nepamatuje. Jak mu dojde mohlo by ho to totiž stát život. Pomalu zjišťuje, jak se věci mají. I to, že je jedním z devíti princů Amberu. Jak se ale do Amberu zpět dostat a získat trůn, který má nyní v moci jeho bratr Eric? Musím říct, že kniha se četla dost obtížně. Tím, že Corwin se tváří, že všechno ví, i když ví úplný prd, se ani čtenáři nedostává tolik informací, kolik by mělo. Upřímně jsem myslela, že knihu nedočtu. Asi do 3/4 knihy jsem se nemohla zorientovat. Pak se ale příběh rozjel, a nakonec to byla úplná bomba. Pohltilo mne to a nepustilo. Svět jako takový je úžasně promyšlený. Amber (symbolizující řád) a Chaos jako jeho protipól. Tohle jsou jediné skutečné světy. Ostatní, včetně naší Země, jsou pouze stíny, které Amber a Chaos vytváří svým působením na sebe. A mezi těmito Stíny, i jejich alternativními realitami, mohou princové a princezny Amberu a Chaosu, jako jediní, cestovat. Promyšlené úplně skvěle. Jen malinko těžší na pochopení. Emoce a city postav v knize nenajdeme téměř vůbec. Oberon, vládce Amberu, otec Corwina a jeho sourozenců, jednoho dne zmizí. Nikdo neví kde je a trůn zeje prázdnotou. A tehdy začíná boj o moc. Kdo bude jeho následovníkem? Všichni jsou proti všem, nikdy nevíte komu můžete věřit. A každý ze sourozenců se stará pouze sám o sebe a o to, aby že souboje vyšel, co nejlépe. Emoce zda zkrátka nejsou na místě. Moc se mi líbilo, že sourozenci se mohou mezi sebou kontaktovat přes karty nebo že mají schopnosti regenerace. Neregeneruji se ale příliš rychle. Což je velké plus. Each time I pick up a book by Roger Zelazny, it's never what I would expect it to be. I've read Lord of Light - a dystopian sci-fi, heavily influnced by Hindduism and Buddhism, The Chronicles of Amber - probably my favorite sword and sorcery series, and A Night in Lonesome October - gothic horror meets fantasy meets mystery, narrated from the point of view of a dog who's master is Jack The Ripper. 🤯 I loved them all. Як завжди у Желязни — в тексті зустрічається багато посилань на інші відомі та не дуже твори, сюжет швидко рухається, але при цьому і світоустрою, і самому герою приділено достатньо уваги. Взагалі, тут все в стилі автора і трохи нагадує Амбер - у рисах Френсіса Сендоу десь проглядає Корвін, планетодизайнерство перегукується зі створенням світів-відзеркалень Амберу. Cette semaine ma #VendrediLecture c'est Le temps d'un souffle, je m'attarde, de Roger Zelazny, traduit par Jean Bailhache pour @lepassagerclandestin.editions . Outre le fait que c'est l'un de mes auteurs préférés, je trouve le titre magnifique et j'aime beaucoup la collection dyschroniques. Le texte est en plus particulièrement touchant.

А серед інших їздять Дорогою двоє: батько і син, прямують назустріч долі — зльоту або загибелі. За штурманів же у тих водіїв незвичні, але поетичні, високотехнологічні та норовливі супутниці. Обидва екіпажі долають перешкоди й ворогів, шукаючи відповіді на життєво важливу загадку. Усе вирішиться при останньому повороті на Вавилон — і не обійдеться без драконів, таких любих серцю Джорджа Мартіна, що він аж екранізацію обіцяє. Як і більшість робіт Желязни, «Дороговкази» трохи містифікують, радше інтригують, ніж розважають. Головоломка з підказками, розкиданими безладно. Хоча навмисно непрозорий наратив може розчаровувати, я не мав відчуття, що Желязни намагався тримати читача в темряві заради нього самого, оскільки намагався поставити його на місце головного героя, блукаючи дорогою, яка тягнеться крізь час у подорожі самопізнання, з її змінами ввімкнення та вимкнення пандусів і розгалужень, що представляють зміни в тканині часу та історії. Це подорож, наповнена химерними персонажами та несподіваними поворотами. Желязни ще той бешкетник. Тримає в тонусі аж до останньої сторінки, сипле відсилками, грається з часом, схрещує епохи, саджає маркіза де Сада на динозавра... Дивовижні світи у нього виходять. Сповнені небезпек і водночас теплі та надійні. Я спочатку не в'їхала, що там два героя. Думала, що один, просто в різні часи. Може, це й на краще - бо рідко коли сюжет мене дивує. А тут і здивував, і потішив своєю ексцентричністю. #AlexProyas è il regista di blockbusters di successo come #TheCrow , #IRobot (con l'insopportabile Will Smith😅), #DarkCity (forse il suo migliore), #SegnalidalFuturo e questo molto meno fortunato e molto criticato #GodsofEgypt che andai a vedere a cinema quando uscì e che ho rivisto di recente in tv. Si tratta in effetti di un film non molto riuscito e con un cast poco eterogeneo (avrebbe giovato avere attori dalle sembianze più africane o asiatiche, ma trattandosi di Dei può starci che abbiano i soliti volti da Hollywood😁), eppure rimane un film unico a suo modo che non ha molti eguali come tematica e che mi ha riportato al libro #EpicFantasy #CreaturesofLightandDarkness (di cui parleremo presto perché mi mancano pochissime pagine)del piu' o meno celebre autore da Culto #RogerZelazny . Infatti non ci sono riferimenti a scritti diretti o a testi mitologici precisi e sicuramente è un film molto sentito da Proyas che ha origini egiziani. È un film tutto action e effetti speciali( non semplici e non sempre riusciti ma comunque con un qualche fascino)e un po'di sentimento (che nei films di Proyas non manca mai)con un giovane ragazzo protagonista che ha dei tratti più egiziani insieme alla Dea Hathor. Si cerca anche un parallelo con #Cristo con la figura messianica di #Horus che spodesta il regno del piu' violento e brutale #Seth interpretato dal noto e bravo #GerardButler . #Ra è interpretato dal grande #GeoffreyRush e la cosa più sorprendente e curiosa del film è vedere dalla "astronave"del Dio una Terra praticamente piatta (ed è la terza volta che succede nei films di Proyas, tanto da dare adito a fantasiose teorie secondo cui il regista sarebbe un segreto "terrapiattista"o illuminato. Le altre due Terre Piatte sono nel complottistico "Dark City"alla fine del film e nelle mappe di "I, Robot", vedere per credere)ed un Sole piccolo come un pianeta-lanterna attaccato alla Terra-Pancake, questo semplicemente perché in accordo con la mitologia e la religione egiziana, gli Egizi credevano appunto che la Terra fosse piatta e come ben sappiamo non erano i soli. Non sarà un gran film ma qualche freccia nel proprio arco ce l'ha e vederlo può divertire. Voto=7 AG

It's made up of five short books in one volume (great to add to your annual reading goal 😂). You can see it's influence on so many fantasy writers like Neil Gaiman and George R. R. Martin who cite Roger Zelazny as a major inspiration on their works. It's special when you find a book that impacts you so much you can't put it down or help returning to time and time again. This one is well read, well loved, and I'm already excited for my next re-read. ○●○ I highly recommend but am yet to find anyone who has read this series too. 🔭1966 JOINT HUGO AWARD WINNER🔭 I was definitely pleasantly surprised by this book. For whatever reason, the blurb just didn't pull me in and I didn't really want to read this book that much. After reading it though, I was glad I did; this book is a Hugo award winner and tied with Dune for a reason. This is one of the big reasons I decided to read all of the Hugo award winner, so I would read books I normally wouldn't go for. George Orr, the protagonist in Ursula le Guin’s The Lathe of Heaven (1971), is one of the most powerful individuals in science fiction. Much like the hero of Robert Silverberg’s Dying Inside (1972), he is struggling to live a normal life; he is not even sure whether they are real or hallucinations. So he decides to go into therapy under the care of psychiatrist William Harper, leading much of the action to take place on the psychiatrist’s couch. George believes that his dreaming can change the past. He has noticed that every so often after a night’s sleep he wakes up to a different reality than the one he went to sleep in. He has no way of proving it and he only suspects it to be so because he has memories of a different past. He recalls an episode from his teenage years when his aunt, going through a divorce, was staying with his family. One night he has a dream where his aunt dies in a car accident. When he wakes up the next morning she has long since been dead, for George a ‘new’ reality, for everyday else it is the way it has always been. Harper, his therapist, won’t have any of it. A student of Freud, he subjects George to hypnotic therapy in order to get to the bottom of his childhood traumas. Equipped with a ‘trancap’ that transmits signals to the brain, George is plugged into Harper’s home-made Dream Machine, aka the Palace of Dreams, a setup that recalls Roger Zelazny’s The Dream Master (1965). Much of the narrative tension revolves around their patient-therapist relationship. And as Harper starts to think that there might be some truth to George’s story, George begins to suspect that Harper is taking advantage of his condition to further his career as a therapist. It all starts out small: one day George wakes up to an office that has panoramic view of Mount Hood (which it didn’t before), but it quickly escalates, Harper starting to have delusions of grandeur. If not for the literary reputation of #rogerzelazny #zelazny I would've skipped this 2-for-1 #scifibook for its unassuming, almost generic cover and titles. However, I am pleasantly surprised even when my reading experience has been uncomfortable and/or frustrating at times. Let me explain: Today We Choose Faces: A proto #cyberpunkscifi with clever plot structure that has kept me guessing. It can be a challenging read because the prose doesn't do a lot of hand holding and only provides context clues. Some dated plot and character elements, and the ever-changing narrators' points of view confused me. Not only that, the story goes in one direction and then to another several times, like a feint within a feint (Oh, so it's cloning? Wait, it's a murder mystery? Uh, telepathy between clones like in Ann Leckie's "Ancillary Justice"? Etc). However, this is in keeping with the theme of the #scifinovel that is deliberate, leading to the third act that left me satisfied (didn't see it coming, but maybe others would). A lot of action similar to "Mission Impossible" (I think). Deserves a re-read and worth the mental acrobatics. Bridge of Ashes: This sequel has a more straightforward plot progression with the most unique introductory 'spacetime travel' narrative I've read so far that got me hooked, and the choice of context clues again makes it a lot less cheesy. An action-packed, more optimistic version of PKD's "Martian Time-Slip", with the boy character having a better support system and his journey going in unexpected #hardscifi directions. I have been skeptical with the unconventional literary style, but whatever dated flaws I have found later on only add to the vintage charm.
