'¿Quién engañó a Roger Rabbit?' empieza con un corto animado, como era costumbre en el cine de los años 30/40, en el que vemos a Roger Rabbit haciendo de canguro de un bebé llamando Herman. El corto en si mismo es una genialidad, entendiendo a la perfección el slapstick y la ingenuidad de la animación clásica, con una animación espectacular. Cuando llega el golpe final, Roger ve pajaritos revoloteando por su cabeza y entonces se oye una voz humana que grita “¡Corten!” seguido de un “¡Tenían que ser estrellas, no pajaritos!”. Es el director del corto, sermoneando al protagonista por echar a perder la toma. La transición al mundo en el que conviven humanos y dibujos animados ya está hecha, rompiendo la cuarta pared con el espectador sin que prácticamente se entere. Ha habido muchos intentos por imitar a ‘¿Quién engañó a Roger Rabbit?’, pero ninguno le llega a la suela de los zapatos. Con esta película, se alinearon los astros. Robert Zemeckis la estrenó entre ‘Regreso al Futuro’ y ‘Regreso al Futuro II’, cuando su nombre aún estaba entre los grandes de Hollywood. Era el director ideal, contando con el apoyo de Steven Spielberg en la producción y haciendo equipo con el animador Richard Williams (un maestro en lo suyo, con mucha mala suerte en sus proyectos) para los efectos especiales animados. Todos estos elementos acaban divergiendo en una película de cine negro, muy inspirada en 'Chinatown', con una trama de conspiraciones y traiciones en la que un detective con sombrero y adicto al whisky (enorme Bob Hoskins) deberá descubrir quien engañó a Roger Rabbit. Parece mentira, pero el resultado final es un maravilloso homenaje al cine de animación (por la pantalla desfilan personajes como Dumbo, Betty Boop. El gato Félix o el reparto al completo de 'Fantasia') y al cine negro, además de una ácida sátira de la industria del cine.
