Being injured sucks! Especially when you’re training for a marathon. I managed just 1.6 miles of my planned 5 mile run on Sunday. With only 11 weeks until the Berlin Marathon I am miles behind my training plan (pun intended 🤣). While we try do our best to avoid injuries with the right training, nutrition, rest e.t.c. unfortunately injuries are an inevitable part of trying to push the boundaries of what our body can achieve. As frustrating as injuries are, trying to do too much too soon will only exacerbate the problem. The training plan is just a guide, not a rule book. Injuries are not factored into a marathon training plan so it has to be flexible to accommodate whatever life throws at us. It’s all been shaping me and getting me mentally ready for these next 11 weeks. I’ve been prepping for this competition since I decided to do it. This is just the ‘prep’ that is the finishing touches to get me on stage. So what’s different?? My macros have changed — I have a little less carbs & fats and more protein. My macros can change weekly. I’ve also got added cardio to my week and more water. The foods I can have is a lot more limited as well. I’ve come too far to turn back now. I’m in it! PREP! This is confidence! 3yrs ago I was a shy little girl was excited about her first pageant but got a little nervous and ran around behind mamas back and giggled at judges from there. I have learned to be brave. I have learned to stand tall even when I don’t win. I have learned to support my friends win or lose (honestly my favorite part). I have learned to speak to adults through interview and through all of that, my confidence has grown. I now LOVE talking to judges in interview, even more, I’m brave enough to speak on stage in intro. And I still feel like a pretty Princess playing dress up when it’s time for my beauty walk. “Get after it.” A phrase my OBGYN said to me yesterday when he asked how working out was going and I told him I was laying off of it a bit. He had more to say about of course listening when I’m tired but not to be afraid to workout. So, yesterday I did a barbell workout that I had a BLAST doing. My hubby could see the sparkle in my eye and everything. Mom beast mode coming at you in the 2nd trimester. (Yes, my OB knows my workout styles and yes what I’m doing is safe. I appreciate the concern but know I’m so thankful for this little blessing of a bump that I would never do something to hurt them. So, everything I do is pre-approved. - I’ve gotten a lot of messages and concerns for my workouts since I got pregnant. Lol 😂 so, this PSA felt warranted.) I’ve been recovering from an injury for the last 11 weeks. It’s easy to get lost in a poor-me attitude, but my take has been to focus on the areas that I can control ... like NUTRITION. Here are the 5 key nutrition components that I’ve been focusing on to ensure that my body has all the nutrition it needs to heal as quickly as possible. ❌AVOID CALORIE DEFICITS: we need energy in the form of calories to heal! While it might be tempting to want to tighten the intake to shed a few pounds, avoid the temptation if you want to heal efficiently! ✅ CONSUME ADEQUATE PROTEIN: your body is going to need protein to help promote tissue repair. Getting around 0.8-1g / lb of bodyweight is important! ❌ AVOID INFLAMMATORY FOODS: we want to minimize inflammation in the body, because inflammation in the presence of tissue damage only makes things hurt more and linger longer! Remove inflammatory foods like alcohol, refined sugar, trans fats, processed / fried / packaged foods, and any personal triggers. ✅ INCLUDE ANTI-INFLAMMATORY FOODS: to minimize inflammation even further, include anti-inflammatory foods like olive oil, avocado, fish, flax, nuts, seeds, tart cherries, blueberries, dark chocolate, pecans, goji berries, green tea and more! ❌❌ AVOID ALCOHOL ENTIRELY: although mentioned before, needs to be said again. In May we learned that little miss Piper would be born with a complete unilateral cleft lip on the left side and cleft palate. For those that are unfamiliar, 1 in 700 children are born with a cleft. It is the most common physical abnormality in children born in the US. There is typically no known cause or reason for the cleft and in our case it is not connected to any mental or chromosomal abnormality. After learning about her big beautiful smile I spent weeks experiencing every single emotion imaginable all at once all the time. As I’ve come to learn the biggest question most cleft parents ask themselves is “why?” and it took a lot of time spent with God and really listening to him to understand. Over and over He said “how else could she be the strong, resilient, beautiful, living representation that I am purposeful in every aspect of my creation?” When I asked God for a daughter that would understand her value in a way so beyond the trends of this world, a daughter that would find her strength in knowing he made her perfect in exactly the way he meant her to be, a daughter that would challenge me as a mother and in doing so would cause me to further grow in a way I have yet been given the privilege. He definitely showed up and showed out! She is going to face many challenges from feeding (requiring special bottles/no nursing) possible breathing/hearing issues, and a series of surgeries starting around 3 months old. She will also require speech therapy for the first few years of her life. All of which JJ and I are confident she will overcome. We are already in the process of vetting craniofacial surgical teams and we ask that you just pray for us and love on us the same way you always have.
