Just arrived in the mail from the fine folks at @rocksteadyrecords thanks Pat. Looks to be a fabulous book on English band Swell Maps, written by bass (and.....) player Jowe Head. Includes a 7 inch single of unreleased material. Swell Maps released 2 LPs and 4 singles before splitting up in 1980. Their music can be lo-fi home recordings, noisy, experimental, almost ambient, to out and out rockers. Probably not to everyone's taste though, a great band! Drummer Epic Soundtracks went on to work with Rowland S Howard in Crime And The City Solution and then These Immortal Souls. Nikki Sudden, Epics brother, had quite a prolific solo career, also working with Rowland Howard. Unfortunately both Epic and Nikki, along with Rowland are no longer with us. Guitarist Phones Sportsman, resurfaced with his own band nearly 10 years ago. Quite taken with Jowe Head's solo work myself. It's not regarded highly by critics, but it has some really good songs on it. Day 3 of 5 of the Christmas records. Today's record is ",A Christmas Yet To Come" by Joseph Byrd. Released on Tacoma Records in1975. Joseph Byrd, formerly of a band called The United States Of America who's only self titled album was released in 1968. They were an experimental psychedelic band, using early synthesisers and other electronic instruments or electronically altered instruments including voice. However we're talking about this Christians album. Performed entirely on the ARP 2600 Synthesiser augmented with a few other electronic bits and pieces. The songs, well the most recent was written in 1856 - Jingle Bells, the rest of the tunes are some traditional and others classical. For the most part they are arranged by Mr. Byrd. Those is a serious record., most Xmas synthesiser records are pretty wacky (and I have a few!) playing up the strange sounds available, not this one. That said I really enjoy listening to it. Just been listening to this gem. The Cheerful Insanity Of Giles, Giles And Fripp. Originally released in 1968, this copy is a reissue from 1970. Hence the blue labels, the original labels are red and white. Giles, Giles and Fripp, went on the become part of the original lineup of King Crimson. This is definitely a quirky record, almost jazzy in parts. I've loved it for years. I originally had a bootleg copy, probably aquired sometime in the 70s. This copy I bought from a stall at Camberwell market in the early 80s, brand new! In fact I bought 3 copies at the time. The stall had only new records, English and mostly Deram. Progressive rock and blues, English titles, I remember seeing records by, East of Eden and Keef Hartley among many others. On a lighter note, here are a few of my favourite Christmas records. Ferrante & Teicher's - Xmas Hi Fivories on Westminster from 1954 . All played on prepared piano, move over John Cage and let Ferrante and Teicher take over. Switching up to the late sixties, Sy Mann with Switched On Santa performed on the Moog synthesizer in 1969. Pickwick Records. Ella Fitzgerald's, A Swinging Christmas, a great record from an incredible singer. Recorded in 1960 for Verve. The Glad Singers bring on Swing Bells! As it says Christmas With A Best, on Columbia, circa 1965,a pretty hip record. A favourite group of mine, The Three Suns present A Ding Dong Dandy Christmas! An absolute classic, with arrangements by Mr Charles Albertine. On RCA's Living Stereo from 1959 The Anita Kerr Singers - Spend This Holiday With Me on Dot Records from 1969. This unassuming record hides some great songs within, in particular What Month Was Jesus Both In? You gotta hear it. The singings not bad either. Peggy Lee, Christmas Carousel on Capitol Records, with orchestra conducted by Billy May. Recorded in 1960, what can you say about the voice of Peggy Lee, just beautiful. This one's a strange one, Dali Caldis And His Brazil Nuts, In A Swinging Christmas Dance Party. On Deacon Records from circs 1970, despite the tacky cover it's pretty incredible. There a numerous re-issues in, different, but also tacky covers. Dali Caldis was better known as Syd Dale, an English orchestra leader. Primarily recorded for library music label KPM Music. He also recorded under the name of Chico Lopez. The Merriest Of Christmas Pops on RCA Records from 1959, is a compilation of some of their artists doing, as you would expect, Christmas tunes. It features, Esquivel and His Orchestra along the vocal group The Skip-Jacks on a few numbers. Also featured, Ray Martin And His Orchestra And Chorus along with Mimi Hines on some tunes. I'm a bit partial to Esquivel. The final record featured is The Christmas Works y Of Tiny Sandler And Ralph Young, which fur my money had the best ever version of Jingle Bells! This came in the mail this week, arrived on Monday having been posted in Japan on Friday! If been looking for it for years after having nearly bought it on eBay about 15 years ago, successfully bid for it but the vendor was forced to close down that very day and wouldn't continue with the sale. Anyway after a look on discogs i found it. A Japan only issue, it came out in 1959, and was arranged by Charles Albertine. The tunes are all arrangements of Japanese folk songs, some of the arrangements are very similar to songs from other LPs by The Three Suns. The Three Suns, brothers, Al Nevins on guitar, Morty Nevins on accordion and cousin Artie Dunn on organ are joined by other musicians on a variety of instrumentation, percussion, jaw harp and so on. It's typical The Suns for the period. The final picture in this post is from and entirely different LP with the same cover, I guess the artwork was too good to waste. It is a compilation of late 40s and mid 50s material. Here's a wonderful LP in RCA's Stereo Action series. This offering by Bernie Green and his Orchestras - Futura cane out in 1961. It's Orchestras because he uses 2 orchestras for the record - BG and his Orchestra and BG and his Guitar Orchestra, each doing half the LP. He uses aforementioned guitars, heaps of percussion ie vibes xylophones, some electronic effects on the form off tape manipulation. All makes a great listening experience and fun! One of my, dare I say it, favourites of the series. I highly recommend getting your hands on this. The Stereo Action series came in special covers. A die cut sleeve with a colourful insert behind the hole in the sleeve. They all had different shapes cut in the sleeves. The insert had all the detail and stereo action hi- fi psychobabble. The Australian issues weren't in such thick card as the US editions but we're still in die cut sleeves. Back to The The Suns and their 1960 concept album, On A Magic Carpet... A travelling album as it were, Frank Sinatra had done Come Fly With Me a couple of years before. Basically, songs with an international flavour, in this case mostly the Americas and France with a couple of side trips. Grooving to a few Command Records today. The first two, a distinctly private eye/shot theme. Enoch Light and the Light Brigade's, The Private Life Of A Private Eye released in late 1958 on Enoch Lights own label, Command. Original tunes in a private eye vein. Next from 1965, Dick Hyman with The Man From O.R.G.A.N., a bunch of times dealing with spies. Third Man Theme, Thunderball, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and so on, with a couple of originals. Great LP. Dick Hyman also features on the next offering, The Corporation, a sort of supergroup of the session musicians who worked at Command (and elsewhere). Vinnie Bell features prominently here both on guitar and electric sitar. The LP is mostly tunes of the era and again a thoroughly enjoyable romp through them. Arrived in the mail last week. Vincent Bell's first LP, I've had a MP3 of this for a while, but it's nice to have it on vinyl and in such great shape for a 60 year old record. Glossy vinyl and sharp cover, it came out in 1959. I believe he self released this on a small label, Independent Record Company. This is the US release and interestingly the only other country it was released in is Australia. Why here? Vinnie Bell passed away a little over a year ago. The go to guitarist for many sessions. He recorded with many people from Frank Sinatra to Frank Zappa (according to his website). Creator of the electric sitar, bellzouki, etc Vinnie Bell also made effects pedals for his guitar long before they became popular. He is reputed to have made a wah pedal in the mid 1950s. This album and the following record Whistle Stop are my favorites, just a basic four piece band and some great playing, effects done as they were recording, no over dubbing. I bought this from him when he toured with The Relative Band early 80s. Culture's influential LP, Two Sevens Clash, Strangely enough from 1977, Joe Gibbs Records. A reissue picked up in Japan a couple of years ago.. Dome II on Dome Records from 1980. Second of four LPs from Graham Lewis and Bruce Gilbert's venture during the hiatus of Wire. There was actually a fifth record, only on CD called Yclept, came out much later, another story. Pink Floyd BBC 1967 , radio broadcasts from the early lineup, extremely good quality, semi legitimate release. Some, I guess, Contemporary Classical, for want of a better term in, Erik Satie interpreted by Aldo Ciccolini (1956) and a wacky electronic interpretation from early 70s by Camarata and the Moog. Edgar Varese as interpreted by Robert Craft for CBS in 1960. This LP features the electronic tape composition Poeme Electronique made by the composer for the Brussels World Fair (1958), and it's incredible. I've been reading Clinton Heylin's book Great White Wonders again, probably 3rd or 4th time, always an enjoyable read. Reminded of the time I used to buy bootlegs from the US in the early 70s. The Australian dollar was quite strong in those days so I was able to purchase quite a few. The mail rates were also ok not like now. Use to buy from a shop called Godzilla Records in San Fransisco. A few of these are featured in the pictures. All went well until one day an order didn't turn up, and I got no response,I guess they moved on or got closed down by the authorities, more likely the latter.
