Followed his soon to be wife to Pelabuhan Ratu on the south coast of Java wearing long thick hair. Extremely radical for that era. Became a self employed fisherman. Later as a married man he became night security for Evan and Nurda in Cimaja. He chose me one stinking hot, humid afternoon nearly two decades ago as I sat sunburnt, spent, my body fried from surfing under the harsh tropical sun. Cold tall Bintang. Ed Kuepper disturbing the ambiance of a post surf tropical sunset. Broken Bahasa, pigeon English, Sundanese (lokal) dialect intermingled with bursts of Sulawesi language delivered at warp speed with a beautiful smile and an infectious laugh. I consider my Bahasa as above medium after a week back in Indonesia but I only understood a few words spoken every paragraph while he laughed and grabbed my thigh or arm with super human strength. Always stoping to giggle like a nukal (sic) school boy. Often I would ask the lokal surfers to interpret. There were many conversations lost in translation at times but it didn't matter to either of us. He laughed, I laughed. We always looked each other in the eye and knew. Been in the same room at Evan and Nurda's three days today. No Pac Juno? Both his sons Suma suma Juno. Bigger, stronger naturally sans gym. Handsome men. Strong as stallions. Genuine. Juno is riddled with arthritis. I purchased Voltaren from the apotec (pharmacy) this morning. After lunch, considering a second surf he arrived. Arm crutches enabled him to walk. Voltaren numbed his pain. Juno called my name and I immediately met him to piggyback the last 15 meters. Yes pain 24/7 but same smile. Same infectious laughter. His son translated and we finally agreed that Juno is presently 95 years of age. I got my art pad to make notes. Founded by singer-songwriter Chris Bailey, drummer Ivor Hay, and guitarist-songwriter Ed Kuepper, they originally employed fast tempos, raucous vocals and a ”buzzsaw” guitar sound that helped initiate punk rock in Australia and identified them with the greater international movement. Unable to get gigs, they converted their share house into a venue where they could play. Yesterday, I was trawling through the 1977 yearbook of my old high school, St Ignatius College Riverview in Sydney, looking for something else, when I chanced upon this photo. It was taken by Father Charles Fraser SJ, the Jesuit who compiled the yearbook and who from time to time would wander through the boarding house with his trusty camera taking candid pictures to illustrate the publication. He caught me here one afternoon after school lying on my small bed next to the window reading the latest issue of RAM (‘Rock Australia Magazine’, which was edited by another old Riverview boy, the late Anthony O’Grady), and what appears to be an article on Fleetwood Mac, whose famous album ‘Rumours’ had just been released. Now, seeing this, you might think that hook filled west coast rock was all there was of interest back then. Not true. A few months before this photo was taken, in late January 1977, I was returning to school after the summer holidays and on approaching the boarding house I could hear loud music coming out of the window of a room at the far end of the building. I’d never heard anything quite like it before. Unrelenting fast paced rhythms with the electric guitar high in the mix and driving a song with a lyric that seemed to resonate with my situation, “I’m stranded far from home” the singer proclaimed over and over. I approached the window out of which the music was blaring. It was on the ground level so I could walk right up to it. Inside was a boy by the name of Peter Becker (photo 2) who was in the year above me, so he had his own room, whereas I shared a room with three others. The record, which Peter Becker was playing on a small turntable, was a 7” single. “Who’s this?”, I asked him. He replied “The Saints, they’re from Brisbane”. It is April 1993, I have just turned 17 so of course I put on my best suit and head off to The Australian Record Industry Awards at The Sydney Entertainment Centre... It's a big night, Molly got inducted into the hall of fame as did Cold Chisel. Many years later I got to ask Don Walker why he wasn't there, he said he watched it at home on TV. Ed Kuepper, was nominated for Album Of The Year, for Black Ticket Day, which has just been re released...on Vinyl 👏👏 Johnny Diesel won the award for Hepfidelity...but I think Kuepper's album has stood the test of time. 30 years later...I am still taking photographs and Ed Kuepper is still playing. This should give hope to all celebrities who have signed beer coasters over the years....because this one was signed in 1993 and I still have it 🤣🤣🤣 The reason I know it's from 1993 is I started my first autograph book in 1994, precisely for the reason of keeping everything together and not accumulating posters and records etc and having to carry them around...+ with and autograph book anyone you meet can sign it... Anyway... Casting my mind back to 1993, I was 17 years old and in my final year of high school. Finally completed all of the (known) stock copies of (I’m) Stranded released worldwide. The most elusive one — aside from the glorious Spanish pressing — was the Australian ‘non-Roo’ second press which were predominantly exported to the UK prior to the version on Harvest which eventually came out in May of ‘77.
