Learning so much about indigenous vegetables I had never heard of before! Today’s field trip with my sponsor, Queen Gaf, to a small-holder, Dawadawa farmer (aka. African Locust Bean) was incredible. This tree is amazing—not only does it provide shade, but its bark is used for medicinal salves and even toothache remedies. The seed pods offer pulp and seeds that make nutritious seasoning powders for soups and stews that aide in hypertension and controlling blood sugar levels, to name a few . So cool, even in this Tamale heat (35°C)! 😎🔥🇬🇭 #CatalystePlus #Dawadawa #AfricanLocustBean #Ghana

Like looking up into a tree strung with red Christmas light bulbs, the Nkhundi - African Locust Bean - Parkia filicoidea is flowering around Mulanje, attracting bats and squirrels with their nectar (each red ball is composed of thousands of tiny flowers). Just wait to see what the fruit look like!

Iru has the potential to reduce free radicals and is an antioxidant for detoxifying the body since the fruit contains a significant quantity of polyphenols, which accounts for most of its anti-oxidizing abilities. The anti-oxidant capabilities of iru fruit extracts are quite comparable to ascorbic acid. The pods of the “Parkia biglobosa,” commonly known as the African locust bean or néré, are used to make iru. Iru is still primarily produced using traditional, often crude processes. Dawadawa a plant based protein can be substituted for meat. When added to meals, the dawadawa beans absorbs some amount of moisture resulting in an increase in its size. Beautiful close-up of the inflorescence of the African Locust Bean tree. The African locust bean (Parkia biglobosa) is a perennial deciduous tree that grows between 7 - 20 m high and sometimes even up to 30m. It is found in many African countries and is essentially grown for its pods which are about 30 - 40 cm long and each containing up to 30 seeds embedded in a sweet, powdery yellow pulp. The bark, roots, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds are commonly used in traditional medicine and for food purposes. The inflorescence is found on a long hanging peduncle and is red in color. It has a very striking appearance and actually looks like an electric bulb. As well, the flowerhead is 4.5 - 7 cm long and 3.5 - 6 cm wide and it has a strong pungent smell. 📷 John Elliott >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> #nature #naturephotography #photography #naturelovers #explore #photographer #natureisbeautiful #ourplanet #naturfotografie #natureisbeautiful #natureshooters #nature_hub #nature_perfection #naturepic #flowers #beautifulflowers #gorgeousflowers #colorful #colorfulflowers #strangeflowers #bizarreflowers #flowerphotography #inflorescence #brightredinflorescence #africanlocustbean #parkiabiglobosa

Parkia biglobosa - "African locust bean" Very happy to have a few of these that made it through the storm! Despite the weird mame this is supposed to have a fabulois tasting fruit and multipurpose seed. Ours were sourced from #ghana #parkia #parkiabiglobosa #africanlocustbean #ghana🇬🇭 More info below- A perennial deciduous tree of the family Fabaceae, in the genus Parkia. It is found in a wide range of environments in Africa and is primarily grown for its pods that contain both a sweet pulp and valuable seeds The pods contain a sweet, yellow, farinaceous pulp surrounding the seeds. This pulp can be eaten fresh or made into sweetmeats and drinks. It contains up to 29% crude protein and up to 60% saccharose, is rich in vitamin C and high in oil content. The pulp also yields a flour that is much used in parts of Africa. The pink brown to dark brown pods are about 45cm long and 2cm wide. Seeds are fermented to make dawadawa, a black, strong-smelling, tasty food high in protein. Dried fermented seeds keep for more than a year in traditional earthenware pots without refrigeration, and small amounts are crumbled during cooking into traditional soups and stews that are usually eaten with sorghum- or millet-based dumplings and porridges. Because of the savoury taste and the high protein and fat values of the seed, it is sometimes described as a meat or cheese substitute, but it is not usually eaten in large amounts. Dawadawa is rich in protein, lipids and vitamin B2. Parinari curatellifolia is deficient in the amino acids methionine, cystine and tryptophan, but fermented beans are rich in lysine. The fat in the beans is nutritionally useful (approximately 60% is unsaturated) Text sourced from tropical.theferns.info

Dawadawa, also known as néré, dodongba, doruwa, netetou, sumbala, iru, or the African locust bean. In our kitchen we call them the West African umami truffle (note: not at all like a truffle except for its shape). Traditionally harvested by mainly women, the fermented beans from the Parkia Biglobosa tree offer a strong, fish-like musk that when added to soups and stews decreases in fishiness and increases in bold umami flavors. It’s lush and we are obsessed, as you can see from our previous post - it went into our vegan chocolate cake, it’s was amazing! Want to find out more? Check out the @todayshow for @zoeadjonyoh article coming out on Dawadawa very soon! Also available to buy on our shop!

With EU support we are reducing deforestation in Casamance by sensitising communities to the devastation it is causing in the region. Many people in the area depend on non timber forest products (products from trees but that grow back year on year) but deforestation and climate shocks are leaving them vulnerable to food and econimic insecurity as well as conflict over resources. Oumie makes and sells delicious cakes made from the highly nutritious African locust bean, known locally as "néré". Her community has placed a number of forests under its community protection scheme, meaning she is able to find large quantities of néré to make and sell even more sweet treats. By supporting communities to see that strong businesses depends on healthy forests, we are able to promote sustainable natural resource management. @ueausenegal Photo credit : @jasonflorio #senegal #casamance #consommonslocal #womeninbusiness #stopdeforestation #africanlocustbean #entrepreneur #femaleentrepreneur #ukinsenegal #instagrams2
