This year I’ll be attempting #APN24 (All Points North 2024). A 1,000 kilometre ride, my biggest endurance challenge so far. It’s now only 4 weeks away, so time for final planning & preparations. Excited and anxious 😬 APN is a self-supported, ultra-distance, endurance cycling event. Riders are challenged to ride to 10 control points spread across the north of England. Riders are able to choose their own route around the checkpoints. Once out on the road, riders have to be completely self-sufficient, are unable to accept support from anyone. Potentially risky business having new bars and bar tape fitted and then immediately doing a 400 but I knew with @brooksengland I'd be in safe hands 😏 As part of their support for #allpointsnorth I was given some Cambium bar tape, and i was super excited for my hands to finally have the same premium comfort experience that my arse has been having for years...😜 Fitted onto my new ritchey skyline bars aka BEST HANDLEBARS IN THE UNIVERSE if you like riding in the drops (and I'm 100% a drops dweller most of the time) and I knew they'd be a winner as they're just the carbon version of the ones I've got on my gravel bike. Verdict: I loooooooove this tape! Several examples of the new @scaletrains.official Operator 53’ dry containers that they recently released on the All Points North club layout a few nights back. Obviously I love the AZNU containers the best (I bought 2 sets of every number), but my 2nd & 3rd favorites were the YRC & FedEx containers. I ordered another 3-pack of YRC, but FedEx is sold out. 😕 IMO, Scale Trains missed on the color for the Schneider containers. The orange is too dark. ‘I live on the border, between two states. On the one hand, I am who I am, and I know who that person is. It’s me, and I can prove it… On the other hand, sometimes it’s somebody else. Those mixed up days when it’s easier to spot yourself in a crowd than recognise yourself in a mirror.’ All Points North by Simon Armitage This is a collection of articles by the UK’s current Poet Laureate. It was published in 1998, before Armitage achieved the fame he currently has, but was already carving out a name for himself. Ostensibly it’s about his upbringing in West Yorkshire, and the celebration of this through the often funny, sometimes sad observations he makes about places and people. However, it’s much more than that. Armitage is both an insider and outsider. He’s inside the community because he was brought up there and has a web of connections. He’s an outsider for two reasons: he’s lived away, but perhaps more importantly he occupies a different intellectual and emotional space to many in his community because of his work as a writer and the people and places he’s encountered in this work. This book is not just a celebration of Yorkshire life, but is Armitage constantly checking himself, asking how far he’s travelled, and what that means now he has come back and made a life with his people. I found it fascinating, because it’s a journey many of us have been on: the first in our family to go to university, the first to travel abroad, and so on. This self observation is not heavy handed, but gentle, sometimes mocking. There are moments of real poignancy - in one essay Armitage thinks about his male ancestors who fought for their country. He then considers the conflicts that have occurred in his lifetime and asks himself what he would have done if called to serve. In this he is conscious of both his heritage and how far he has, or hasn’t, strayed from it. This is a thoughtful book, with much humour. At this point I’m torn because, between the 2 configurations, I like the look of the 3x3x2 load best & I can build them faster, but the 3x3x3 load has better weight in the car with the extra cribbing & pipe. These images had been unseen for thirty years, and the archive has since gained a substantial following. The first edition of the photo book Out & About with Linden: A Queer Archive of the North, was a selected study of the pub and club scene from Birmingham to Newcastle, with contributions from Boy George, Julian Clary, Mel B, Paul O’Grady, Su Pollard and more. Initially published by filmmaker Joe Ingham in 2022, a second edition was published in 2023 by PARIAH PRESS. This artist talk explores the brash, thriving and diverse gay scene and queer club culture in the UK in the 1990s, a period also marked by the HIV/AIDS pandemic, homophobia, and discriminatory laws. This year our public programme has been developed to complement the concurrent Whitworth exhibition (Un)Defining Queer. All Points North - DNF Pair with @bexladyman Well after 5 months, I’m finally ready to reflect on not finishing @allpointsnorth.cc 🥲 I trained really hard for this event, and our legs were going well but I had majorly underestimated everything else that goes along with ultra endurance cycling aside from fitness… Here are some thoughts on why things didn’t go to plan: - A lack of PMA at the start (our ambitions had changed on the morning from ‘we are finishing this’ to ‘let’s see how far we get’) - underestimating the impact of no sleep - not having a bivvy back up for sleeping - not enough fuel/ I couldn’t eat another SIS soft bake - wrong bike/ set up - a continuing and growing lack of PMA throughout (mostly me) I’d be lying if I said I haven’t felt like a failure ever since. I hadn’t quit on the bike before so it’s played heavily on my mind. Ah well, there have been many lessons learnt from just giving it ago this year. I’m definitely going to give ultra endurance another shot next year; it’s very much unfinished business for me. Fun timing, because it’s now 10 days out from the start of TCR, I’ve still only got a draft version of my route (but at least there’s a version at all!) and I’ve so much to do, which tbh is about as organised as I was for APN 🫠 • Anyway here are some photos from my absolutely insane routing up and over Wrynose and Hardknotts pass twice. B to A day 4 ….. surprisingly it’s hot again and no cloud cover the sombrero is now attached to the helmet. Works very well but looks awful. I don’t care….. I did get slightly burned on my wrists yesterday. Campsite for tonight could be just round the corner. The maps view from OSMAnd app is outstanding for facilities. Distance easily covered and some great places stopped off at. The micro wild camp site with shelter and fire pit on the river is very tidy. I pulled up behind Rider #133, @lily.alice.b just before checkpoint 2 at Selside. We’d crossed paths a little earlier on Exchange St in Colne. The rudest of climbs up a high street. She shouted that she needed coffee, I clung on & coasted to the Sainsburys over the hill where I bought two meal deals and ate them both greedily on the pavement. We discussed the utter absurdity of ultra endurance & whether we were both cut out for it. She had won the @rab.equipment sponsorship. She had my sides splitting with her story of gorging on homemade chocolate covered dates & the inevitable consequences. I remember she was a mechanic and ran @women_in_tandem. We were clearly both showing signs of fatigue already as we had a debate about the direction of counter clockwise. Hardknott & Wrynose were a topic of dread inspired conversation. I’d decided to go the long way round to swerve a hideous midnight climb. At Ribblehead viaduct our tyre tracks went their separate ways. She progressed forwards whereas I stalled, mired in a cloud of hungry midges to plug a puncture. Probably one that had reopened from 2 weeks earlier and which was the source of my low tyre pressure. I’d put at least 10,000 frustrated strokes of my mini pump into rectifying it today. I followed Lily’s dot regularly through the race. She was spoken about in tones of reverence by fellow riders for taking the 4 hour hike-a-bike out of Wasdale Head the next day. It’s often the briefest interactions on the road that have the biggest impact & im so glad we both finished. I’m still struggling with just how to pull all the myriad pieces together from All Points North into a coherent story. But without a doubt, for me at least, the most significant threads are centred around the other riders that you meet out on the road. Rider 112, @gravel_charlie72 was at the start line with me & was there to clap me over the line at the end. He was the first person I passed and our tyre tracks crossed constantly over the next few days. He didnt flinch as I called him Craig for at least the first two days. Id pass him on the flats or as he tended to his ever growing saddle sores roadside & he’d pass me on the climbs or on my many frequent opportunist stops for food. We badmouthed the Lakes beautiful yet cruel terrain together, tried to have an unsuccessful cheeky nap in the shadow of Long Meg’s daughters (thanks @ipulledthepin 😂), hit several resupply points at the same time & shared a much needed dinner on a pavement in Brampton. His choice of fish, chips, curry sauce & Iron Bru belying his Scottish roots. The last time I saw him was in a layby just outside Norham Castle where he’d eventually scratch. But he still had that big smile. A thoroughly top bloke who impacted my ride massively & who I’m sure I’ll share the road with again. Cheers Craig! This week 5-11th June is national bike week. One of our RVNs Louise recently completed All Points North, a 1000km self-supported ultra cycling event in the hills of Northern England. Just over 2 weeks ago setting off as a rookie on All Points North. I had no idea that the fatigued decisions I would make would lead to me riding an additional 110km with an extra 2000m of elevation than I’d planned. That I would spend practically the entire 3rd day crying uncontrollably or that 2 weeks later I’d still be largely unable to feel my right foot. I’ve finally started to write it all down, it’s incredible how much you can pack into 4 days when you only sleep for 14 hours. A massive thanks to Tori & Ange and the entire team @allpointsnorth.cc & @a.different.gear for putting on such a bewilderingly immersive event. I’ll save my gratitude to the many friends I made along the way until the next time I pedal alongside you. Because there will definitely be a next time. The power of a simple smile, a friendly chat or a well timed hug when at an exhausted low has not been lost on me. And all are valuable life lessons for our interactions with others. The fleeting sight of a neon bandolier bedecked rider, sharing a familiar glance as our tyre tracks crossed. That look which says in a nano second “I know. This is hard. We are separate but we are in this together. We WILL get to the end.” I’m still tired but I am finally able to look back on this positively rather than as an entirely destructive act of self-flagellation. Just as all those I went to for advice in the immediate aftermath said I would. 1051km in 83 hours. It’s been nearly two weeks since I set off for @allpointsnorth.cc I’m still processing and playing back moments from this race, reliving some of the adventure whilst I wait for all the feeling to come back in my left hand. After scratching last year I was a bit reserved about how much I could push myself. I kept my days efficient so I could take a longer rest at night. It’s amazing how quickly your body can adapt to endurance. My average speed stayed relatively high and on the final day I was crushing previous PB’s I thought would take months to reach. Now I’ve completed one, I know how much I can throw into it next time . I’ve never been much of a writer, but please enjoy this slightly unhinged collage that sums up how my ride went.
