It plays a crucial role within the Amazon, anchoring the riverbed to prevent erosion and acting as a nursery for fish. Through photosynthesis it also continuously enhances the water’s quality. INTRO:- I'm sorry I'm behind with my reports & updates of the Brazilian Amazon, etc. So, here is the first part of a new post, starting with the situation regarding forest fires, in February, this year. Part 1. Nearly 3,000 forest fires were registered in the Brazilian Amazon in February, the highest for any that month since records began in 1999; & made more likely by climate change, according to experts. Brazil's INPE space research institute said it's satellites had picked up 2,940 fires so far, 67% more than the previous high of 1,761 recorded in February 2007 & four times more than in the same month last year. "The climate factor certainly plays a fundamental role in this anomaly," Ane Alencar, scientific director of the IPAM Amazonia research institute, told AFP. The northern part of the rainforest was the hardest hit, particularly the state of Roraima, home to the Yanomami Indigenous reserve. "We have seen the Earth break... temperature records. Every year is the hottest year, & this has a synergy with climate phenomena" such as droughts, said Alencar. Drought devastated the Brazilian Amazon between June - November last year, stoking huge fires, reducing or wiping out major water reserves, wreaking havoc with wildlife, ,& affecting millions of people. A study in January, by the World Weather Attribution (WWA) said climate change was the main driver of the "exceptional drought" in the world's largest rainforest. The WWA is a scientific project that seeks to quantify how climate change influences the intensity & likelihood of a particular extreme weather event. Such environmental "stress," said Alencar, "generates all the necessary conditions for each fire to become a large fire," adding that some of the blazes may have been the result of forest clearing for agriculture. The Camu Camu fruit is commonly grown in the Amazon region of Brazil, Peru, Colombia and Venezuela. The Camu Camu fruit and it’s seeds are rich in powerful antioxidants, including vitamin C and flavonoids. Some research shows that Camu Camu may even be effective in fighting inflammation and reducing both blood sugar and blood pressure. Some communities believe Camu Camu can even regrow their economy, meaning if there is an abundance of the fruit, they can sell it in nearby cities and provide a living for their families. The Giant River Otter is the world’s largest otter, reaching up to 6 feet long! That’s more than twice the length of the North American river otter! They are extremely family-oriented, living in large groups along the river banks of the Amazon. They are a top predator in aquatic systems, helping to control prey species population sizes, playing a HUGE role in keeping the river ecosystem in balance. They are also considered an ‘indicator’ species, meaning their health gives us an idea of the overall health of the river ecosystem as a whole. The Giant River Otter is endangered with the total population of giant river otters in the wild as low as 5,000. They are considered extinct in Uruguay and likely extinct Argentina. Part 1. In the absence of human activity, fires would not burn in the heart of the Amazon rainforest. It’s too wet, even during the driest parts of the year. Yet for as long as satellites have made large-scale monitoring of the rainforest possible, researchers have observed thousands of fires in the Amazon every year, with especially intense activity during the dry months of July through November. While deforestation in the Amazon decreased significantly last year, the forest continued to burn at an alarming rate. For the first time since 2018, the clearance rate was less than 10,000 sq km in the 12 months until 31 July. Still more encouraging, the loss of tree cover in Indigenous territories fell by 73%. **Despite these statistics, a staggering 26.4 million acres (10.7 million hectares) of Brazil’s Amazon rainforest burned in 2023—an area comparable in size to the U.S. state of Tennessee—according to MapBiomas Fire Monitor. This perilous combination led to drier conditions, thereby intensifying forest fires. To varnish or not to varnish? I usually dislike the look of a highly produced piece that is shiny with varnish. I would rather see the messy panel sides, with drips and finger prints…something more raw that tells me about process. On the other hand, I also dislike how wood panels soak paint and make it look a bit dry and flat ….I thought i would experiment with satin varnish, which is quite subtle, not shiny, and covered one panel with it. Planning the fight 🔥 During the fight against the wildfires in Bolivia, we had the firefighters join us from La Paz. Working alongside them was an incredible experience and there was this sense of camaraderie even though many of of fighting the fires had 0 experience at it. For us guys, who came in to help, but had never done this before (@d.ottttt @patrick.h.j @benjaminpilopp and more) we were fuelled by our shared desire to stop the fire and our passion to defend nature. I think we were also all adrenaline junkies in one way or another 💉. We worked as a team, planned as one, cooked and at as one and slept as one. When I look at them I think it’s interesting that one represents my Israeli background and the other-is inspired by Brazilian landscapes. I started a new fire painting this week. The finished one on the right is a reference. I want to make the one on the left a bit more abstract. I’m drawn to paint fire. I love the colors and the ‘heat’. It’s so magnificent and awe striking, it spreads and consumes so rapidly. The Potoo bird is a native to the Amazon Rainforest. Instead of physical defense, these birds have become experts at hiding! They usually land on top of a dead tree branch and stand completely still. They keep their eyes closed, however they can still sense movement with their upper eyelids allowing them to watch for predators during the day! They play an important role in the health of the Amazonian ecosystem, and since they spend most of their time amongst the tree tops, their habitat is declining at an incredibly rapid rate. I don’t often paint in a square shape, but here’s my latest, from Friday, 16” x 16”, oil on wood. It’s so exciting to see snow in NYC but my perception of the world nowadays is that’s it’s on fire. Everywhere I turn there’s war and conflict, there is hate consuming people’s hearts, like fire. Watching so many documentaries about MLK this weekend I was wondering if we will ever have a magnificent leader like him preaching for non violence resistance, prioritizing human dignity, integrity and spirituality above all. There are many reasons why the passion flower is crucial to the Amazon Rainforest. Passion flowers produce a strong scent that attracts specific insect pollinators. They will bypass other flowers to focus on a single passion flower species, ensuring the success of that species. They also have a symbiotic relationship with certain ant species. The ants protect the vine because the plant provides special nectar for them to eat, and in exchange the ants help to pick off predators. Indigenous tribes throughout the Amazon rainforest utilize the passion flower for both its sedative and pain relieving properties. The fruit can be used to calm coughs and to heal heart ailments. The passion flower is also currently used in herbal medicine as a sedative, antispasmodic and nerve tonic. The flower can also alleviate headaches, bruises and general pain by applying leaves topically. The fruit juice is also used as a remedy to calm hyperactive children. Most recently, scientists have also found that the flower can help with both anxiety and fertility. This is just one of the many medicines found in the Amazon Rainforest, and what’s shocking is that less than 5% of Amazon plant species have been studied for their potential medicinal benefits. The Amazon manatee is a keystone species within the Amazon Rainforest, meaning if they became extinct, many animals that depend on the manatee habitat for survival (including for food, shelter, and camouflage from predators) could also become extinct. This also makes them a key indicator of healthy habitats. The exact number of manatees is unknown but they are believed to be critically endangered due to habitat loss, fishing, and pollution from oil extraction projects, oil spilling and mercury contamination from mining, as well as persistent hunting for its meat and oil. The Golden Lion Tamarin is native to the Amazon Rainforest of Brazil. They play an important role as they disperse seeds of many fruit and air plants. This helps the natural regeneration of the rainforest, making their survival crucial to the overall survival of the rainforest. In spite of recently successful conservation efforts, their current population is less than 3,200 and they remain on the endangered species list. Their habitat is severely threatened by illegal logging, mining and poaching (they are illegal sold internationally). The excessive deforestation reduces their habitat and breaks it into “islands” making it impossible for isolated populations to interact with one another. There are over 1,500 bird species that live in the Amazon Rainforest, in Colombia specifically there are over 150 species of Hummingbirds alone making it a key habitat. Hummingbirds play a major role in pollination, as they are able to fly in the rain! Since the Amazon is a RAINforest, you can imagine their extreme importance to this beautiful place. Many species of hummingbird are now considered critically endangered, meaning they are near extinction. This is a HUGE problem for many reasons including something called coextintion, meaning if one species becomes extinct many are to quickly follow. Ocelots are considered a keystone species in the Amazon Rainforest because they help to keep the small mammal and bird populations at a healthy level. Now, however, due to heavy deforestation as well as an increase in poaching they are once again nearing the endangered list. The Giant Anteater is one of the most threatened species. They are the largest of the four living species of anteaters, and they play an incredibly IMPORTANT role within the rainforest. Not only do they help to control the insect population, they also dig for water when it is not found on the surface creating CRITICAL watering holes for all other species. They are also an important prey for jaguars and pumas. Fires are destroying their habitat and also killing these slow-moving anteaters as they are not able run to get away from the fires. Poaching is another main cause of their decline as they are hunted for both sport and to make equestrian equipment from their hides. They play such a crucial role in the overall survival of the rainforest, and are currently nearing extinction. There are 6 distinct species of caimans, with the black caiman being the largest. They can reach up to 20 feet long! This makes them the largest predator in the Amazon River basin. They were at one point almost completely extinct due to poaching, as its hide carried a very high commercial value. They are now making a comeback due to conservation efforts, however because of this they are considered “Conservation Dependent”. Their existence solely relies on conservation efforts, meaning we must continue to push forward in out efforts to fully conserve the Amazon Rainforest. Approximately 90-140 billion tons of carbon is stored within the trees of the Amazon Rainforest. The Paradise Tanager is native to the Amazon rainforest. Unlike many other birds, male + female Tanagers have the same coloring. They do no migrate, rather they spend most of their time amongst the tree tops deep within the Amazon Rainforest, making them difficult to study. Its population is rapidly decreasing due to the heavy deforestation taking place within the Amazon Rainforest. This is the case with many animals within the Amazon, so many have yet to be discovered, and many may face extinction before ever being known by the outside world. The Amazon River Dolphins live only in freshwater. Compared to other dolphins, Dolphins World writes, “Amazon pink dolphins are considered the most intelligent of them, with a brain capacity 40% larger than that of humans.” The Pink River Dolphin acts as an indicator for river health, meaning if that population is thriving, the overall sate of the fresh water system is also thriving. However, if the population is in decline, it is considered a red flag for the ecosystem as a whole. The Pink River Dolphin has now become ENDANGERED due to deforestation and habitat loss. Artivist Mundano travelled throughout Brazil collecting hundreds of pounds of ashes from the aftermath of thousands of wildfires destroying Amazonian forests. He then created “environmental crime pigments” and used these to paint murals focusing on climate change issues. I was lucky to be able to see “The Forest Brigadier” in person when I was in Sao Paulo. This mural is a reinterpretation of a painting of a farm worker (swipe to see)by the Brazilian artist Candido Portinari. Mundano replaced the farmer with a firefighter, a member of one of the many brave volunteer forest fire brigades which have formed to protect their homes and environment with little support from the government. @mundano_sp #amazonfires #environmentalcrimes
