Explore the latest edition of the AICA e-mag, featuring a diverse array of thought-provoking articles and reviews. Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll find inside: Rui Cepeda’s "La Biennale Arte di Venezia" is a walk through Stranierei Ovunque/Foreigners Everywhere exhibition, concluding the art is about “the Queer artist, the outside artist, the self-taught artist, the folk artist, the ‘artista popular’ and the indigenous and native artists, who are frequently treated as foreigner in their own land.” @ruigcepeda Sasha Craddock’s "Venice Biennale Review" muses “with each artist given ample autonomous space and opportunity, the ultimate impression is that they speak at some level, somehow, in the same way.” @sachacraddock Luciane Garcez’s "Intellectual Aftermath" reminds “Looking at the paths taken by art and how it flows and permeates other fields or other temporalities” and is often overlooked in today’s aesthetic dialogues. #LucianeGarcez Curator Emmanuel Lambion’s "Ghosts and Nails" (thru 5/18/24) which features unusual conceptual works: missing objects, numbered keys, an embroidered handkerchief, all uniquely situated on the 20th floor of a 1972 Brussels post-war apartment block. @lambionemmanuel Miriam La Rosa’s "A Guest on the Edge" asks “does Manifesta imagine values of unity and solidarity in European context, or does it instead present in the contemporary art field an idea of Europe as a fragmented hegemony?” This essay took first place at AICA-International’s Incentive Prize for Young Art Critics, 2021. @miriamlarosa Marc Michael Moser’s "Immersive Installations in Old Master exhibitions" surmises “But do we need ‘a new way to look at old art’ as room-filler in a classical exhibition? The potential of digital exhibitions is immense, and it will be the future of exhibitions.” @marcmichaelmoser Read the issue on our website: link in bio #AICA #ArtCriticism #ContemporaryArt #ArtInsights #ArtWriting #ArtisticPerspectives #artCritic #DigitalMagazine #ArtCultureSociety #AICAeMag #CriticalWriting #AICAInternational #AICAint

"Activists play the drama of the toddler on the high chair, flinging puréed food in anger, then gluing themselves to the object of rage and desire: mommy. The efficacy, if there is any, of the gesture relies both on sited museum gallery and dispersed image." – Allison Hewitt Ward For centuries, museums have been home to an idyllic world of art and conversation. Only decades ago did they become host to frequent forms of protest, including nutrient-rich forms of food-related vandalism. There has been no shortage of wondrous achievements in Joan Jonas’s career, from her groundbreaking tricks at the dawn of video to the awe-inspiring literary-cinematic treatments of land and sea in her recent work. But among her art’s most magical qualities—and a particularly pertinent, lucky one now, for the purpose of her momentous retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art—is its capacity for shape-shifting reiteration. The presentation of a six-decade career anchored in performance as an exhibition (albeit one that incorporates many hours of moving-image work) is a stunning feat. The multimedia installations in “Good Night Good Morning” are, without fail, beautifully reworked for the space and situation. Just as impressive is how the artist’s early, historic pieces are represented—through props, documentation, and ephemera—in environments and vignettes. Johanna Fateman (@johannafateman) reviews. The death of Frank Stella; the death of courage and dynamism in Minimalism What do thin lines say? "By Aydin Amini" The death of Frank Stella is another elegy on the body of semi-life Minimalism; Stella was not only minimalistic in his approach to painting and sculpture; he was minimalistic in thought as well; his engagement with minimal elements philosophically shows his entanglement with nihilism lurking in minimalism; when seeing Stella's works, what should we seek? What do these lines tell us? Are we revolving around ourselves? Stella is the creator of the minimal approach to philosophical questions; his bold use of pure and abundant colors poses a philosophical question about the concept of color; his minimal use of straight or curved lines poses a philosophical question about the essence and importance of lines; leaving vast surfaces blank, his philosophical questions about the nature of painting surface and its relationship with composition; Stella managed to ask relatively fundamental questions about painting; what is the nature of the canvas and the nature of painting? Painting did everything it could with line, color, and composition, and these three, whatever they had, they did with painting; Stella's answer was........ #FrankStella #ModernArt #Minimalism #MinimalismArt #Painting #Art #Artworks #ContemporaryArt #ArtHistory #ArtCritique #ArtReview #ArtAnalysis #ArtEvaluation #ArtCriticism #ArtDiscussion #ArtAppraisal #ArtCommentary #Aydinamini

"...when there are nine thousand men [referring to Oswald Mosley] in a country who are capable of facing prison from loyalty to an idea, this idea remains a living one. And as long as a man is left to carry the flag, nothing is lost. Faith moves mountains. In that respect, I see things with the coldest objectivity. If the German people lost its faith, if the German people were no longer inclined to give itself body and soul in order to survive - then the German people would have nothing to do but disappear!" Part Four covers March, May and November of 1944. I'm going to be quite honest, I thought this would be longer archive; but indeed, it seems as though the records for 1944 only cover three months out of the year, the last entry covering over two days of November. But as we saw with 1943, even if it is short, we still have nuggets of knowledge to discover in the ever-widening cracks of the Reich. Some observations: - Despite the situation Hitler and the Reich found itself in in 1944, the first topic of discussion, prompted by Hitler, is that of film stars and their recruitment. At this stage we see a Hitler who seems to prefer discussing lighter subjects; indeed there seems to be almost no mention of the war in this year, or even a mention of the attempt on Hitler's life in July in the November transcript. - His discussion on the worthlessness of art criticism makes one wonder if this is Hitler lashing out at his critics, who seem to, day by day, been proven right as the Russians move closer and closer to the heart of the Reich; the critics who destroyed his aspirations to become an artist and the critics who poked holes in his plans for Germany are one in the same in his mind. - Hitler's idea of the teacher seems to correspond with the image of himself in this archive - a man who seemingly knows everything and who's thoughts and ideas should be directed only at the State and for the State's existence. His observance that, "He is a man whose task is to impart knowledge and understanding to men who do not possess them and who, therefore, are generally his intellectual inferiors; and in consequence he is a man who is often inclined to (continued below)

In a 1960 interview, the abstract painter Mark Tobey, after years of living in Paris, where he achieved acclaim from the otherwise relatively chauvinist French critical establishment, nevertheless demurred that he was “an American painter, whatever [that] means.” After securing her position as a major figure in American abstract painting, Joan Mitchell, who spent long periods in France before eventually moving there permanently in 1959, said she hated “to be called an exile or an expatriate”; she was, in the words of poet John Ashbery, an “apatriate”—stateless, more or less. The ambivalence expressed in these comments about what being an American artist actually signified in a post–World War II world, a world of ascending US power on the global stage and of a simultaneous cultural internationalism made increasingly possible by the accessibility of air travel and other forms of congress and communication, is just one of the many threads woven through “Americans in Paris: Artists Working in Postwar France, 1946–1962,” a show that inaugurates the new home of New York University’s Grey Art Museum. Comprising nearly seventy artists—both canonical and woefully under-known—and 130 individual paintings, sculptures, photographs, textiles, and other objects, the exhibition serves to complicate a period in which all eyes were on New York as it transformed, thanks to the advent of Abstract Expressionism, into the capital of modern art in the West. Titian, Christ and the Adulteress (1511) For me, one of the greatest gestures in Renaissance art, and one of the many invented by the young Titian - invented because nowhere to be found in the Gospel of John which the painting illustrates. With his right hand Christ pulls the Pharisee by the arm, just as the latter is pulling the woman, but with his left he gently invites him to ‘have a seat’, to occupy the empty seat of judgement next to which Christ is seated (see the profile of the emperor on his left). Christ does not judge (“I will not judge you”, he will later tell the adulteress), he has given the seat up. But then why does he invite the Pharisee to occupy it? And why does he invite him to seat there if, as we know, a moment later, when the Pharisee will be seated, Christ will say “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her” (John 8: 7) and the Pharisees will all leave? He seems to be telling us that we have to take a seat in order to renounce it - a sort of kenosis in reverse - and therefore that forgiveness can only be practiced through justice. Now we understand that with his right hand Christ continues what René Girard would call the chain of “reciprocity” - the vehement invitation to impart a violent law (“an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth”) is still inscribed in the era of the Mosaic Law - whilst his gentle gesture with his left hand announces the abandonment of the Law and the coming of the era of Grace. Titian illustrates the way Christ uses the (body-)language of men to prepare the ground for his own language. And he represents forgiveness as an empty seat: a place of justice that must be taken into the picture and - or as - deserted. #titian #painting #renaissance #art #italianpainter #gestures #artcritic #artcriticism

Where do you find #inspiration during life’s challenges?” … So of course this quote by #NaomiCampbell had to pop up in a magazine then : one my inspirations coz she is also famous for saying that she doesn’t get out bed for less than $10,000 a day lol … This #CollageArtwork came about as we did a workshop with Palawa Artist #MichelleMaynard in 2023, and one part of it was the concept of #SoulCollage - it was part of the #WandjaariiMaalii Fashion Workshop Series organised by Kylie Caldwell; which was #inspiring because the concept and exercise was #insightful and new to me; and also just being around like-minded people getting crafty on a Saturday in the Silly Season was #inspirational, and needed …and plants : #plants are also always inspirational and needed too #NothingForever #AnythingNow #NotTakingCriticism #Criticism #ArtCriticism #collage ~ #JennyFraserArtist #BoomalliMembersShow #BoomalliMembers
