Last weekend was a blast! I had the best first weekend of the @artistsopenhse as part of @dulwichfestival. The first of these photos were taken at my VIP viewing on Sunday. Last week, on our way back down from the top of Helvellyn, we stopped for lunch at Grisedale Tarn, a small mountain lake. It’s a peaceful spot surrounded by slopes on all sides except for this view up the ghyll towards Ullswater. I managed 3 small sketches out on this hike, and decided to scale one up at @copperbeechcafenorthdulwich whilst talking to visitors out on the @artistsopenhse trail. . Is it a sudden eureka moment or a subtle shift of perception? Over human history you can trace the absorption of one belief system into another seeing different elements, symbols, stories appearing in one belief appearing as part of, or alongside, the new ideas to help the amalgamation of cultures, politics and religions. With so many different choices, voices and channels that come through our technologies, all jostling for our attention, the global traumas, perceived threats and environmental disasters overwhelm with every click, swipe and blink. Belief systems loud and quiet, bombard us through media channels nestling in our systems. At what point do they shift our own beliefs? When do they change our daily rituals? Our inherited religions? Over time our historical stories, tenets, symbols, signs and meanings that have been part of our upbringing are challenged or re-strengthened. The artwork in the Lutyens Room is arranged as a procession through objects of different artistic beliefs, pointing to new myths, a point of Syncretism where ideas become merged and the old symbols get incorporated into new systems. The theme selected by Bell House curator @kimthornt is ‘The Tipping Point’. Six artist curators and over 40 artists will take over Bell House during Artists Open House weekends, to explore this theme from within painting, photography, ceramics, film, printmaking, sculpture and installation. @minangelartist and @lucysoniartist will be exhibiting in their room alongside @suzanneholtom @didohallett10 and myself. Schneider @sch_pots is our Thursday tutor teaching mixed techniques in the afternoon and throwing on the wheel in the evening sessions. She will be showing her flamboyant ceramics in @bellhousepottery during both weekends of Dulwich Festival Artists’ Open House @artistsopenhse Schneider makes functional and sculptural ceramics. Her tableware is thrown, often decorated with mono-print slip transfers. Her sculptures use the full palette of ceramic techniques, combining different clays and materials. After decades as a ceramics hobbyist, Kyra has in the last eight years become a full time maker and teacher.
