More suspended motion. This is one of my favorite numbers, but, sadly, it isn’t seen often. It is in the 1964 film What a Way to Go, starring Shirley MacLaine and a series of “husbands,” including Gene, who each kick the bucket. Gene dances to a beautiful song called “I Think That You and I Should Get Acquainted” with music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green. The script by Comden and Green is fun and witty, but, like their work for It’s Always Fair Weather, it doesn’t get the attention of Singin’ in the Rain. Gene is just shy of his 51st birthday. You see Shirley standing to the right watching him. Remembering Lucille Ball who passed away on this day in 1989. Lana & Lucy photographed above at the premiere of “Show Business” (1944) at Graumen’s Chinese Theatre, where Hollywood’s leading ladies appeared as dates of wounded servicemen. Proceeds were turned over to the Birmingham General Hospital’s wounded soldiers’ fund. Lana made a cameo in “Du Barry Was a Lady” (1943) which starred Lucille Ball. In the same year, Lana was scheduled to start “Best Foot Forward” but found out she was pregnant. Lucy replaced her. Ten years later, during the filming of “The Long, Long Trailer” (1954) at MGM, Lucy used Lana’s old dressing room. (Desi Arnaz had Clark Gable’s). You often hear me speak about Gene’s desire to maintain the long “line” in his dancing in the movies, so I thought it would be fun for you to see how he employed that concept earlier on Broadway. This is a still from his ground-breaking role as Joey in Pal Joey that premiered on December 25, 1940 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in NYC. Gene was 28 years old. My eyes usually go to one thing first when I see a photo of Gene. In this case, it is to the softness of his left hand. Y como si ellos, a sus años, no hubieran tenido oportunidad de experimentar ese lado amargo de la vida que, sin embargo, yo, por fortuna, apenas he probado. ¿Por qué cuento todo esto ahora? Porque en los últimos meses algunas de las películas con las que más he disfrutado en el cine han sido: “Cantando bajo la lluvia”, “El maquinista de la General”, “Playtime” o, más recientemente, “Un hombre sin pasado”. Todas ellas encajan de alguna manera en el género de la comedia: desde el slapstick de Keaton hasta el gélido humor de Kaurismäki. Todas ellas me han reconciliado en buena medida con el ser humano (seré un cretino, sí, pero aspiro a seguir formando parte de este grupo). Me han hecho volver a confiar en la comedia. Para hacer digerible la vida, para criticar al poder, para reírnos de nosotros y, también, para hacer reír a los otros… Riámonos pues. Bing congratulating Marlon Brando for winning the Best Actor Oscar of 1954 for his performance in "On the Waterfront" (1954) during the Oscars ceremony at the Pantages Theater on March 30, 1955. Bing was nominated for the same award for his performance in "The Country Girl" (1954). While Bing's performamce deserved the Oscar at least as much as Brando's wonderful performance did, the increasing mainstream popularity of young (method) actors showed in the Best Actor and Best Actress Oscar wins of that year. Bing was reported to have been the public's favorite candidate for the Best Actor Oscar. During the segment of Brando's win, the television camera also caught Bing and his date that night, his future wife Kathryn Grant, in the audience, at the same moment when the two photos were taken (📽 slide 3). Before that, Bing had joined MC Bob Hope on stage to present the three music Oscars and trade some jokes (📽 slides 4-7), referring to Bing's dramatic role in "The Country Girl" in which he played an alcoholic has-been star with crippling self-doubt, fear of responsibility, and a need for public approval and pity. "The Country Girl" won two Oscars that night, Best Screenplay (George Seaton) and Best Actress (Grace Kelly), while it lost Best Director, Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography to "On the Waterfront". The new Irving Berlin song that Bing had sung in "White Christmas" (1954), "Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep" was nominated for Best Song, but the award went to "Three Coins in the Fountain".

Vintage antiques🌟 I had a great time at the Regent cinema and antique centre in Blackpool. This is a huge vintage craft stall inside a 1920s cinema, which actually still shows films today. The stalls span 3 floors and there's also a cafe to sit down (it's huge and took us an hour and half to get around, it just seemed to keep going!) There were so many vintage items up for sale ranging from the 1920s to the 2010s including dolls, tea sets, furniture, clothes, pictures, ornaments and so much more. The Elvis Presley section was so cool and really full of interesting merchandise from watches and ornaments to jewellery and clocks. I can't believe I didn't buy anything but a DVD! There was so much variety and things that I liked but I was trying to be good and not spend on things I didn't really need or have space for. The Gene Kelly picture was so lovely and so was the John Lennon artwork but I know I just don't have space for them and they would only sit in storage. I finally watched Singin' In The Rain. Now I understand why a lot of people enjoyed this film and because of that, I fell in love with Tap Dancing again. Yes, again. I remember back when I was 7, I was watching these animated shows where there were multiple tap dance sequences. I asked my mom if we could buy some tap shoes, but it didn't happen. Probably, because I wasn't serious or maybe my eyes were more into MJ. What I know is that, Tap Dance was one of the first dance genres I loved.
