📗Title: The Ballad of Perilous Graves by Alex Jennings ✨ Star rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 out of 5 📚 Read this book if you like: urban fantasy, magic, multiple POVs, and the city of New Orleans. ➡️ Swipe for synopsis. 📖 Review: At the 50% mark in this book I was thoroughly confused, but I remember thinking, “If this all resolves well, it will be a five star read.” Unfortunately it did not resolve well. I loved the main characters. Great representation with trans and minority main characters. The story was intriguing. The setting was gorgeous with rich detail and culture. I actually loved that the author didn’t infodump. The fantasy elements were just presented as they came up in the story. And as it unfolded, the reader slowly figured out the magic system and the world building. And the plot had so much potential. It wove together so many elements of history, culture, music, art, and dialect. There was excitement and tension and wonder. But the ending was rushed and unfinished. And so many questions were left unanswered. And it was hard to tell exactly what was going on. There were other struggles with the book—the multiple POVs and scene changes were hard to follow, and some of the storylines seemed unnecessary. But I could have overlooked those if the ending had been more put together. I loved the narrator for the audiobook. His dialects and accents made the book come alive. It would not have been the same experience reading the book myself. Overall I wanted to like this one and I did like so much about it. Film 746 - Shapeless (2021, 1h 28m, Google TV) A body 'horror' focusing on an eating disorder. Sadly this didn't focus on the horror enough and I found that it didn't quite reach it's potential. Had this focused on the drama and hadn't attempted to delve into the horror world, it would have had a bigger impact on me. It's attempts at body horror fall flat, partially due to the slow pacing. Towards the beginning the cinematography was artistic yet it became quite repetitive. Kelly Murtagh is superb in her leading role, creating a rather accurate portrayal of a person struggling with an eating disorder. With positive reviews & relevant thematic elements, I was intrigued to check this out for a while. Going in relatively blind, I found that this modern Bonnie & Clyde-type tale was thoroughly entertaining & cinematically creative. The camera angles were unique & found ways to make even the most conventional of scenes feel stylistically different. The story, despite being relatively formulaic, was consistently compelling & maintained my interest from start to finish. The third act does embrace some brave choices, although I don’t feel like the filmmakers ever went full-out with the execution of their ideas. The characters are written fairly well & both leads gave solid performances, although I admittedly never felt fully invested in them emotionally. Part of this could be a result from the dialogue, which often seemed unnatural & occasionally took away from any chemistry the two actors could have potentially formed. This is by no means a bad movie. I adamantly believe this is a good movie that just fell short of its ceiling in many regards. Well this was a very pleasant surprise. I upgraded my I Phone a few months ago and I got Apple TV free for 12 months. I had a quick flick through could really find much and never looked at it again. For some reason I decided to set it up on my Roku box and I’m really happy I did as I found this movie I knew nothing about as it’s exclusive to Apple TV. • • It’s based on a true story about revolutionary businessmen Bernard Garrett (Anthony Mackie) and Joe Morris (Samuel L. Jackson) devise an audacious and risky plan to take on the racist establishment of the 1960s by helping other African Americans pursue the American dream. Along with Garrett's wife Eunice (Nia Long), they train a working class white man Matt Steiner (Nicholas Hoult) to pose as the rich and privileged face of their burgeoning real estate and banking empire. While Garrett and Morris pose as a janitor and a chauffeur. Their success ultimately draws the attention of the federal government, which threatens everything the four have built. • • An excellent inspiring movie it’s incredibly executed and very well written with beautiful cinematography. Jackson is fantastic as always but Mackie performance was phenomenal. I’ve always like him in the marvel movies but seeing him do such an incredible job in the lead role I really hope he get more chances in the future as the main character, But the entire cast did a fantastic job a credit to the director George Nolfi. • • The plot advances at a nice pace and there is a good mix of drama and comedy that keeps the momentum going. I’m really happy I bumped into this today as it's a story that needed to be told and it highlights and educates all the wrong doings done to people just because they don’t have the same colour skin of the people in power. Daniel Kaluuya (‘Widows’) has really been making a name for himself in recent years, and continues to shine here as the relatively reserved Slim; Jodie Turner-Smith more than holds her own as well as the lawyer Queen, and is extremely impressive in her first major role. Expect to see more of her in the coming years. It’s listed as a comedy, but wasn’t really that funny. This movie is about teenagers doing dumb things, being shallow and stupid, and hopefully learning to make better choices.
