The words are just as important a component to the success of a film (I mean artistic success - not commercial) as is how the film looks and what it does visually, both large and small (people who talk about film tend to sometimes forget that a low-budget film, or one that forgoes large sets and special effects, is still making a visual statement). What is often the case though - and one of the reasons why I think so many pretentious film people tend to look down their nose at big-budget special effect-laden movies - is that many film makers focus their attention on the visual aspect of film making but forget about how important the words are. Which leads to films like The Transformers I and II, Terminator Salvation, Ecks Vs Sever… and I could go on, but you get what I'm saying). I bring this up, because The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is a film with strong artistic visions that also remembered how important the text is. No one familiar with Terry Gilliam's work could ever accuse him of not having a strong vision - but it could be said that sometimes that vision doesn’t work beyond just looking good - yes, I’m talking about Tideland. However, with Dr. Parnassus, he has created a gorgeous film that is a feast for the eyes, with a story that is big and interesting. Gilliam isn't scared of grand story themes and here he takes on the classic deal-with-the devil scenario (in The Fisher King - my favorite of his films - he went with the holy grail). Dr. Parnassus is a film I couldn't help but think of in the bigger discussion of visual ideas and the good and bad use of said ideas in movies. Which, in this case is, good use in a very good film. •feel free to like and follow. Si passa da una parte all'altra del campo, la testa si volta, ma a volte si blocca. Se resta ferma da un lato, l'attenzione non è più sulla partita ma su uno dei suoi giocatori. A volte addirittura si ferma al centro, dove ogni cosa perde importanza e si pensa a tutt'altro. Movie - Into the Wild 2007 ‧ Adventure/Documentary ‧ A classic road-travel film for an audience and spiritual guidance for humans, this biography of a real boy taking on his own sense of the world really intrigued me. Apart from a lot of amazing wildlife shots and emotions captured, there is a has a message for all us in these concrete jungles. The best bit about this film is the narration. Hands down to the portrayal of the protagonist's thoughts and how his sister thinks about him throughout the film. These quotes are taken from the books the boy reads, and if not, are his own. They are PLENTY expressive and insightful. 'I think careers are a 20th Century invention and I don't want one,' is from this film, I think, and to be honest, doesn't a small part of us want to run into the wilderness and think of all other things to manage after that? To not spoil much, there's a wild play with the timeline, here, and plenty of characters all of whom that reach out to a great depth across the screen. I think that is the strong point of this film, really, because while the parents are introduced in a frenzied point in the timeline, all the other characters are introduced chronologically and yet, the screenplay shuffles throughout Alex's life. #intothewild #willywonka #goodmovies

I stumbled upon this movie while flipping through Netflix, it’s one of those movies made in the 90s. 😳 I just feel like 90s movies tell better stories but anyway. This one is about another successful husband cheating on his successful lawyer wife for no reason at all besides she works too much.🙄🙄🙄 Funny how she didn’t cheat on him when he works too much. The mistress gets out of hand and starts calling the house while the wife is there ( you know back then they had house phones). Well one night she calls and the son and the dad pick up the line at the same time and the son hears the lady tell the dad she loves him. 😑😑😑 Well when he didn’t say it back, she calls out of work the next day, he goes by her house to get end in person. The next day at work it’s being reported that she was found no longer with us. All I can say imagine being the wife who has to be the lawyer to your husband in this because you believe he is innocent. Trying to figure it who did it will leave you shocked, I bet you can’t guess. I’ll say right off the bat this is easily my favorite movie of 2024 so far. I could not believe how hooked I was the whole time to the point where I felt genuinely exhilarated by the end. The story, despite jumping around time a lot is easy to follow and understand but has a lot of complexity to its characters and relationships. The three main performances are perfect. Zendaya gives off so much confidence and power her whole performance that you 100% buy the hold she has over the other two. Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor are also incredible and I couldn’t decide who I liked better. The direction throughout is perfect but especially during the tennis matches. Something I personally would normally find boring is made so intense and thrilling through Guadagnino’s direction. You never know how things are gonna go and it kept me completely captured. Finally I gotta bring up the score by Reznor and Ross arguably two of the best people doing movie scores right now. It adds so much to the movie and helps capitalize on its best moments. The Name of the Rose (1986) or when the saints become the sinners An abbey - a place of peace and quiet - unless you live in the 14th century and are a monk at a certain Benedictine abbey in Northern Italy. The inhabitants of said abbey have been shaken by a mysterious death that just before an important theological conference takes place there. Thankfully Franciscan friar William of Baskerville (Sean Connery) who is known for his wisdom and knowledge and his novice Adso of Melk (Christian Slater) have just arrived to participate in the conference. While William plays medieval Sherlock Holmes, more deaths occur. Can William find the murderer before it's too late or will he become a victim himself? I cannot resist a good murder-mystery film because that's where I can put on my imaginary deerstalker and pretend I am the next Miss Marple, well a younger version at least. And this film delivered. There are numerous mysterious deaths, plenty of suspicious people and a setting that helps in creating an ominous atmosphere. Sometimes the score remains in the background and after the credits have rolled I can barely remember it - not this time though. James Horner masterfully understands how to create suspense and increase the sinister ambience with the power of music. Sean Connery portrays the wise, level-headed and rational William of Baskerville very well. He radiates an auror that makes you instantly trust him much like a beloved grandfather figure. As contrast you have the innocent and naive Adso who has no clue how the world works. Christian Slater does an excellent job in playing the young Aldo who still has much to learn. However, there is also a second, deeper layer to the movie openly hidden behind this highly entertaining whodunit plot and that's the criticism of the church as an institution. The film frequently shows the double standard of the church for instance while the monks are giving morsels of food to the poor, they are simultaneously collecting food from them as some sort of tax. It's this second layer that to me made this film truly standout. This is not the first time I have seen this film and it certainly won't be the last.

Veoma provokativno utegnuta kombinacija SF-a, trilera i drame stala je u poprilično interesantno češko ostvarenje pod nazivom "Bod Obnovy" što bi u prevodu značilo "Restore Point". Ovim filmom češka kinematografija samo nastavlja nekad davno uspešnu čehoslovačku tradiciju koketiranja sa SF žanrom i filmskim adaptacijama nekih od klasika SF književnosti nastalih iz pera njihovog čuvenog pisca Karla Čapeka koji je u neku ruku bio Asimov i pre Asimova. Radnja ovog neobičnog filma se odigrava u distopijskom Pragu, 2041. godine. Stanovnici zbog povećanog procenta nasilne smrtnosti imaju ustavom zagarantovano pravo na jedan ceo život sve dok ne umru prirodnom smrću. Tehnologija je toliko uznapredovala da u slučaju ako neko umre neprirodnom smrću, uz pomoć inovativne tehnike "Tačka oporavka", postoji mogućnost reanimacije ali samo ako je preminula osoba pravila bekap svojih sećanja na svakih 48 sati, a celom pričom upravlja Institut za restauraciju. Zaplet počinje kada detektivka Ema Trohinovska dobija delikatan zadatak da istraži sumnjivu smrt jednog od pronalazača reanimacije i njegove supruge, koje je navodno ubio pripadnik terorističke organizacije "Reka Života", inače odgovorne za borbu protiv neprirordne tehnologije uskrsnuća ali i za raniji teroristički napad u kome je nesrećno stradao i detektivkin muž. Zbog svega toga ona ima i veliki lični motiv da otkrije šta se stvarno dogodilo ali već na početku shvata da ništa nije onako kako na prvi pogled izgleda... "Restore Point" po svojoj vizuelnoj i provokativnoj atmosferi najviše podseća na finu mešavinu legendarnih klasika poput "Blade Runner" i "Minority Report" pa zahteva malo veću pažnju pri gledanju što se na kraju svakako i isplati jer donosi veoma kvalitetan doživljaj odličnog SF noir trilera u umešnoj režiji Roberta Hloza koga bi se postideli i mnogo skuplji i bombastičniji holivudski naslovi slične tematike.
