George’s little pink webbed feet are so cute! 🩷🕸️ ~~~~~~~~~ This pink hue is normal! It can actually be a sign of a healthy turtle! When they sunbathe (or sit under a heat lamp), the blood rushes to circulate the warmth (since they are cold blooded creatures) throughout their bodies! Besides a very rough looking Pikachu doll I made for my kids which I couldn’t find a photo of, I think it might be this turtle. SPECIES SPOTLIGHT: Black-Breasted Leaf Turtle (Geoemyda spengleri) It's day 2 of #InternationalTurtleandTortoiseWeek! This species is one our partners over at @ttpg_turtlesandtortoises work very closely with. It's among the world's smallest turtles, and is endangered in its natural habitat. This species is ever surprised, and their prominent eyes are white in males, and off-white to light brown in females. It's almost completely terrestrial and has an insatiable craving for earthworms. It is International Turtle and Tortoise Week AND Turtle Talk Tuesday and while I'm sure you're much too busy to be looking at the computer right now, what with all the festivals and soirees you're planning for your favorite reptiles, let me tell you what we've been doing for our turtle friends lately while you're stocking up on their favorite snacks (insects! algae! small fish and crustaceans! vegetation! toss it all in a salad and put it on the 'gram)! You’ve been hearing a lot about our Ipswich Mills Dam removal project, but that’s not our only plan to improve habitat connectivity and continuity on the Ipswich River. Swipe to see before and after photos of the Pond Street culverts in Topsfield. Massachusetts Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) has generously provided The Town of Boxford with a Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) Action grant. These grants allow communities to identify climate hazards, review weak points, and develop plans to improve our community’s resilience in the face of climate change. IRWA is providing project management and outreach for the grant, which will improve three culverts in Boxford. These culverts were originally designed to allow water to flow beneath road crossings, but they did not account for higher and more frequent flood flows or the fish and wildlife habitat fragmentation caused by these undersized culverts. Ever seen a turtle try to cross the street? It's not easy, and they can't all be seen (they're not all lucky enough to have safety vests)! Improving the water flow through these culverts will ensure they can accommodate a wider range of stream flows, whether there's a storm surge or a drought, and will be able to offer both fish AND wildlife safe passage as they move and migrate. Each culvert crosses Pye Brook in the Howlett Brook watershed and will be updated to meet MA stream crossing standards and the standards of our favorite aquatic critters. On this #EarthDay we wanted to update you on the spring surveys we conducted as part of our Wood Turtle (Glyptemys insculpta) Monitoring project! . The weather was cold when our team was in the field, so numbers of visible specimens was lighter than usual, but we still managed to locate many individuals with ~50% being new mature population members for our monitoring program! . Happy Earth Day - while I do make a fair amount earth friendly, reusable products, I just couldn’t resist sharing this guy. 🐢 #InternationalTurtleandTortoiseWeek 2022, Day 4 🐢 Do you remember this old tortoise friend of mine? I first met this stern-looking shell in 2014, when I was the size of his head! Can you believe I used to be so tiny?! 😲 Mom was prepared for how much I would grow from my itty bitty baby shell, but many people who buy tiny adorable baby turtles are not. Every year, scores of turtles are abandoned (often in awful health) because their humans are unprepared and overwhelmed by how much work is required to take care of their turtles. 😞 Quarter-sized baby shells do not stay small and easy to manage! I am getting close to my adult size, but many tortoise species grow much bigger than I will. For example, baby sulcatas start out just as small as baby me, but they can grow to over 200 lb when full grown! 😳 ⚠️ If you are thinking about getting a turtle (or any other pet), please research what your turtle will need to stay healthy. We cannot emphasize this enough: Turtles are not toys or pet rocks! All turtles need specific habitats and diets to stay healthy. Not only do tiny baby turtles grow into big shells, but also all turtles have very long life expectancies, sometimes over 100 years! Can you imagine how painful it is for a turtle to live with painful deformities and medical issues for over 100 years because a careless human couldn’t be bothered to do their research? Please do not impulse buy any animal, shelled or not! But it’s not just baby sea turtles who need our help: Adult sea turtles are in danger, too! I was so worried about my old sea turtle friend that I tried a little too enthusiastically to pull him out of harm’s way... 🤨 🌟 Two of the many better ways you can help sea turtles are reducing your plastic use and choosing responsibly caught seafood: 1️⃣ Say no to plastics: So much of our trash ends up in the ocean, including plastics, which are notoriously resistant to breaking down. 🌊 Sea turtles (and other ocean critters) frequently mistake plastic for noms (are you surprised based on what you’ve seen me CHOMP?) and end up with plastic-filled insides. Each year, an estimated more than 100 million marine animals die from eating or getting entangled in plastic. 😱 Help bring down that number by saying no to plastics as much as you can and recycling plastics that you do use! 🚫 2️⃣ Choose responsibly caught seafood: If you like seafood, choose seafood that is sustainable and fished according to regulations. 🐟 Commercial fishing methods like trawling, longlines, and drift gillnets entangle and kill sea turtles and other “bycatch”. For example, light sticks used along open ocean longlines attract sea turtles that get caught on the hooks or entangled in the lines and drown. In nature, that is normally the ocean reflecting the night sky. 🌌 But when bright humans lights are nearby, baby sea turtles become disoriented, and they end up going the wrong way or, even when they do make it to the ocean, they linger longer in predator-rich nearshore waters that are brightly lit. Today is The annual World Turtle Day® . The day was created as a yearly observance to help people celebrate and protect turtles and tortoises and their disappearing habitats around the world. Unfortunately pollution, littering (such as balloons released by morons), climate change and disappearing habitats means that many, if not most, species of turtles and tortoises are endangered and/ or extinct. These beautiful turtles were some of the turtles we saw this weekend at Seal Rocks. But not even Seal Rocks is a safe place. One fisherman cheerfully informed us that he cut the line and he also caught one of the spearos (I mean who let this clown into society🤦‍♀️).

Hermie loves to try to climb vertically up the wall. I’ll hear a little clunk, and I always come over to find him in this state and then I flip him back. 🐢 #InternationalTurtleandTortoiseWeek 2021, Day 5 🐢 A couple years ago, friend Rae gifted us a new tortoise friend and stylish tortoises for Mom’s feet! 🎁🐢🧦 My new friend is carved from tagua nut, also called “vegetable ivory.” Tagua nut looks and feels like “real” animal ivory, but tagua nut is made from the hard white seeds of certain palm trees that naturally grow in the rainforests of northwestern South America. The seeds are harvested by simply picking them up off the ground where they fall year-round: No animals or plants are harmed! 🌰🙌 These days, tagua nut is an increasingly popular and eco-friendly alternative to plastic and animal ivory. Our small shelled friend sits proudly on a shelf, but tagua nut is also used to make buttons, jewelry, chess pieces, and many other items.
