CEOs: Have you ever wondered how some execs explain their ideas so easily and off the cuff? There's nothing more frustrating (or embarrassing) than flopping an opportunity to share your thoughts, ideas, and opinions. And always at the worst times - on-the-spot interviews at events, podcasts, panels, company all-hands (even worse), etc. As CEO, I struggled with this and sometimes bailed on important events. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺: I was too focused on building and not doing enough broader thinking about my industry. 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Write daily and Read A LOT. Spend at least 30-45 minutes each day reading your industry's trades and reading broadly. When thoughts or ideas hit, write them down. Writing down your thoughts locks them in. Once they're locked in, you can build on them. The goal is to practice taking your random thoughts and molding them into something cohesive. 𝘿𝙖𝙞𝙡𝙮 𝙬𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙨 𝙖 𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙩 𝙘𝙤𝙙𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙘𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 and, as a result, effective communication. Since I started writing daily, I'm a better writer, thinker, and speaker. Like all the book's I've read of Adam Grant's - this book summarizes the research in a way that encourages the reader to explore the concepts on a deeper level. One of my favorite quotes taken from the book is: "What look like differences in natural ability are often differences in opportunity and motivation." People often assume that top athletes and other highly skilled professionals are born with the innate ability to shine. This makes their skill level appear to be unattainable for most. The research suggests that the innate skill is not the key marker for these successful individuals. Instead, it's the opportunities to develop skill, the support around them, and the internal drive to improve that distinguishes them. I really enjoyed Dan Health's book Upstream, for the focus on prevention of problems and the power behind that method. For most of my work with clients, I am building mental strength, mental agility, and the ability prevent problems from occurring. I often find resistance to this type of work, because most of our society is trained to focus on reacting to problems. People would rather invest time and resources once they know for sure the problem exists. It's so much harder to fix a problem compared to prevention work. Hearing stories of people getting upstream and therefor preventing problems tends to inspire me to continue to advocate for building strength rather than responding to crisis. Adler's book was used as source material. It is very much a text book and the granular detail covered can be overwhelming. However I found the sections on fallacies very helpful. Our Container Libraries are educational resource centres that can be set up in various communities and schools nationwide. This project entails recycling cargo containers readily available in Ghana into reading and learning centres. Cargo containers will be developed and insulated into a naturally ventilated indoor reading area and the space around it into outdoor sitting areas (in the absence of parks) to be utilized for various community outdoor events. The indoor floor area will be based on the dimensions of the 40-footer container. Internal walls and ceiling will be insulated.
