The Twyford Code - Janice Hallett Very innovative. This is presented through a series of transcribed audio messages left by a recently released ex-con as he resolves to solve the mystery of a missing teacher from his school days. There are LEVELS to this book. It's really very clever indeed - every page is filled with hidden clues and it all comes together at the end. I was, though, a little lost when reading it. I thought the plot was sacrificed in places when trying to be overly clever with the clues, and the jumping around of timelines meant it wasn't easy to follow. ✨Otherworldly by FT Lukens✨ FT Lukens has become one of those automatic buy authors for me. I know the stories are going to be lighthearted, well-written, funny, and at the end make me go awwww 🥹❤️. Otherworldly was no different. This book is such a grumpy/sunshine, which I love. Ellery is focused on working and sending money to their family whose farm has been a suffering from a five year winter. Knox is a familiar with so much warmth and positive energy. They strike a bargain and hijinks ensue. I loved ALL the characters in this story. Ellery’s cousin and her girlfriend are funny and adorable. They create this little found family the four of them. The story was fast paced and heartwarming, and SPOILER, there’s a lil Hadestown reference near the end that had me screaming 😂. My one critique of this novel is I felt like it went a little long. There was a certain part where I was thinking it was getting close to wrapping up, but then I realized there was still a lot of book left. Not a bad thing, while the ending was good, it felt a little disjointed from the section where I thought it was ending. Overall though, I enjoyed this one as always with this author. And of course as usual the cover is STUNNING. I highly recommend FT Lukens novels, they’re super cute YA rom-com fantasy that you’ll fall in love with. Even more so, I have a thing for autobiographies that confirm what I always secretly believed in. As it happened with this book, this book confirmed for me that there is no such thing as being “too old” to start doing something new – to start learning something new – to start being something else – to become an entirely different person from what you used to be. I don’t know about others, but I have always struggled with this “too old” thing. I guess it’s because there has always been someone else who pretended to know better and would try to talk me out of doing something “no one your age does”. Like, huh. Really. So, this book was right up my alley. And, above all, it is about being strong, being resilient, and about moving on, about being determined to make your life better, and about making the world a better place while doing that. If you ever feel like you know someone who needs a little push, a little encouragement, or a little inspiration to leave the bad situation they feel stuck in, and start their life anew and fresh – get them this book. And make sure they read it. It’s a quick and short read (under 150 pages), but it does leave a lasting impression and it does make you see that it’s never too late. ❄️ 5 STAR BOOK REVIEW❄️ The Frozen River by @ariel.lawhon 5+ stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A highly anticipated read that lived up to (and surpassed) the hype! 👏🏻 2024 Favourites List! 🏆 Atmospheric and haunting. Maine, 1789. Martha Ballard, a midwife in a riverside small town, also serves as doctor and coroner. She aides in the investigation into the death of a local man which appears to have been murder. This was a quiet, slow burn historical mystery — a story to be savoured. I truly adored every element of this novel and the powerful way the author presented this story. The writing is gorgeous and haunting. The diary entries were a brilliant layer to the story. The characters were exceptional. Unique and interesting, each with an element of mystery that kept me curious about every one of them. I loved the small, isolated community that was at the centre of this story. The town felt like a character itself. Transportation depended on river status — frozen or flowing. This limitation controlled business opportunities and life in general. The traveling court system was a fascinating aspect of this story. I am always drawn to stories revolving around midwives and natural medicine, and this will be a stand out in that regard. Martha was a multi-layered, fascinating character and to learn that she was a real person made the book even more impactful. The Author’s Note at the end was unforgettable. It’s my stop today on the Influencer tour for Seven Days by @robertrutherfordwrites and I feel so lucky to have been invited by @hodderbooks to be a part of the tour! The dedication alone really made me smile and from the minute I started reading, I didn’t want to put this book down. I loved Seven Days’ unique premise from the moment I heard about this book: “Your father is on death row. You have seven days to save him. But do you want to?” This was the question faced by Alice whose feelings surrounding her father were particularly complicated. She hadn’t spoken to him in years and didn’t even know he was in prison, let alone on death row! Now with only seven days left for him to live, Alice is faced with a big choice. She has a chance to try and save her father, but should she? This story was just as thrilling as it sounds and I really liked the short, punchy chapters as it meant that the pace was always so brilliant the whole way through the book. I was so invested in Alice’s journey of discovery and couldn’t wait to see what truths would be uncovered next and what situations she would find herself in. A particular revelation around the middle of the book took me completely by surprise (it was one of my favourite moments of the whole story) as did the way the whole story gradually unfolded. I found myself racing through the pages to see what would happen next, especially in the last quarter when things got particularly tense. Seven Days is such a clever, enthralling read and I loved all of the twists and turns along the way. Although I wasn’t ready for the book to end, I like being able to imagine what happened next after I finished the final page. This truly is a fantastic read! Na het toneelstuk ‘Het achtste leven’ had ik enorme zin om een boek van Nino Haratischwili op te pakken. Een goede aanleiding ook om weer wat te lezen uit eigen kast, ik lig wat achter met deze challenge (24-in-’24). Beide andere boeken staan daarin, en ik heb ervoor gekozen om eerst ‘De kat en de generaal’ op te pakken, uit 2019. Dat wordt dan boek 5 van de 24, maar met zo’n dikkerd (676 pagina’s) schiet het niet echt op. Later maar inhalen met wat dunnetjes, kinderboeken en graphic novels. Het duurde even voor het verhaal op gang kwam, maar daarna was het wederom genieten van deze schuld-en-boeteroman over Rusland tijdens de omwenteling in de jaren negentig, het verval van het Sovjetrijk en de Tsjetsjeense Oorlog. Wat een fijne schrijfstijl heeft Haratischwili toch. Ik verheug me op het Schaarse licht. 📖 Tsjetsjenië, 1995: Noera is zeventien wanneer er een Russische legereenheid in haar dorp neerstrijkt. Het uitbreken van de Eerste Tsjetsjeense Oorlog verbrijzelt haar droom van vrijheid. Berlijn, 2016: een Russische oligarch, die ‘de generaal’ wordt genoemd, is samen met zijn negentienjarige dochter Ada naar Duitsland verhuisd. Zij is zijn oogappel, maar ze heeft vragen over zijn rol in de Tsjetsjeense Oorlog. Hij beseft dat zijn verleden hem zal blijven achtervolgen en dat het tijd is voor de afrekening. "Exuberance", my novel, is set in Sydney. My ❤️ for my adopted city transpires in every chapter. Some of Sydney’s most recognisable landmarks are featured in the book, including the fountain at Martin Place, designed by Lloyd Rees, that has become world-famous after appearing in The Matrix. Recently, I was going past and snapped this picture of the fountain in a rare moment where there were no crowds around, with the buildings surrounding it illuminated by the fading afternoon light. The scene in Exuberance featuring the fountain is based on my own experience – when I almost had the opportunity to brush past Keanu Reeves in the late 1990s… but didn’t. After seeing The Matrix at the movies with her family, Angie (my book’s heroine) recalls seeing the men with the long black coats near the fountain, behind a wall of people, although at the time she had no idea what they were filming. She was on her way to the State Library one Sunday, to do some research for uni. Pitt Street was closed off around Martin Place, and there were signs posted saying ‘If you cross this point, you are giving consent for your image to appear in a motion picture.' Amb els “Contes” i sí, és clar, amb l’esperança que no s’acabi aquí, que em rescatin “The Reivers”, “Sanctuary”, “Sartoris” o “A Fable”, perquè no. Meravella absoluta. Cirereta al prestatge: “L’habitació d’en Giovanni”, el meu primer Trotalibros. James Baldwin by Dolors Udina, relectura per demà. L’havia de tenir, i aquest anirà al costadet d’un Toni Morrison by Dolors Udina, “Sula”. Per cert, que jo pensava que m’estrenaria amb Tarjei Vesaas (per les quatre mans Baggethun-Lorenzo) i no, el primer que he llegit (fa poc i m’ha enamorat) és la Rose Macaulay, però això és una altra història. De La Casa Dels Clàssics, la cirereta final. Les “Ànimes mortes” de Nikolai Gógol, aquest no l’he llegit, i ho estic desitjant de manera grotesca. Em cal satisfer la necessitat de rialla de gust àcid i amargant, cirereta confitada per perfecta, plaent lectura que no té per què ser dolça. Res, doncs això, contes, novel·les, roses solidàries i els meus Goigs particulars en honor de Sant Jordi. Feliç dia de lectura!

Vanity and Vampyres by Tilly Wallace is yet another cute and fun entry in the series. I really enjoy the strong friendships, family bonds and relationships in here so much! It might have brain eating zombies, other monsters and murder, it's still a cosy and comfy read. If you like Gail Carriger, I highly recommend trying this as well! Certains date de mes années collège, si je ne me souviens plus des détails des récits, leurs grandes lignes et leur titre est bien ancré dans ma mémoire. D'autres, bien qu'un peu plus récent correspondent à ma période où je lisais systématiquement le livre après avoir vu le film au cinéma. Autant vous dire que sans appel, la version papier remportait ma préférence. J'ai revu par le hasard des choses Kramer contre Karmer il y a une quinzaine de jours à la télé. Les larmes étaient encore bien présentes. 37.2 le matin, m'a accompagnée pendant quelques années, l'affiche du film était la seule décoration de ma chambre d'étudiante. Petite pensée à l'évocation de ce livre à @labibliothequedejuju (j'ai lu il y a peu que Julien Rampin aimait beaucoup le film) dont je relirais également le magasin des jouets cassés. Not as good as the first one but I will say it did get me excited for the 3rd one coming out this summer! I think I was disappointed bc the way the first one ended I made up in my mind where I thought the second one was going and it actually didn’t go that way and glossed over what I thought it was going to be about and I got bummed 🤣 But still a great read! Solid 3.5 out of 5!
