Funny Pages (2022, dir. Owen Kline) Un caricaturista adolescente rechaza las comodidades de su vida suburbana en una búsqueda equivocada del alma. Películas como esta son la prueba de que no todo lo que hace A24 es perfecto ni mucho menos. Si bien me pareció una idea interesante que exploren la vida de un adolescente que quiere ser dibujante de cómics, no encontré algo verdaderamente memorable en la película. Me pareció lenta y aburrida, francamente nunca supe hacia dónde iba por más que transcurrieran los minutos, y al final no encontré ningún cambio o progreso, todo se sintió que acabó en el mismo punto donde empezó, sin ningún avance para el protagonista. Hay que decir que es una película desagradable, un “coming of age” que no tiene esa romantización de la juventud que tiene el subgénero pero que sin embargo consigue funcionar como la antítesis. 💥 La película es como el hijo feo de “Mid90’s” y “Ladybird”. No confundir “feo” con malo. la película es muy buena pero es extremadamente desagradable. Te revuelve el estómago des del minuto uno y no es explícitamente dura. En sus formas es muy noventera, y consigue lo que pretende. Parece cine indie de los 90. FUNNY PAGES (2022) ~6.5/10 • This is a film that seemed to be treading the same ground as ART SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL and GHOST WORLD. This film is more realistic but has the same kind of downtrodden dark humor. This film is much more downbeat than those films. As those films seem more cynical yet a bit more stylized. This seems rawer and victims of circumstances. Though this is just as funny at times. As mostly the joke is on the lead character. Who brings all Of this upon himself. Only in this film, there are no winners it Is more of a comedic meltdown. Of a young man who believes that he must suffer to be a true artist, From his privileged upbringing. He tries to be rebellious and anything troubled or dirty deep. As expected he slowly Gets a wake-up call. That the audience from the beginning knows is coming. We want to root for him in his naive nature. As he wants to experience life. We see his continuing downfall. As he enthusiastically moves forward into a horror story of idealism. Each character, he comes across seems crazy skewed in some sort of way. The characters and film are somewhat grotesque at times. As it all seems grimy. The Aesthetic here is usually Close up And to Go for warts and all quality. Basically wanting to always want to show us the ugly side of the characters. While also showing that every person is flawed in some way. Even as this film is a coming-of-age story that offers few of answers. As the film makes its points but offers very little to make its Mark. Funny Pages must be the surprise indie film of the year, a raw and off-beat study on struggle artists, that works as a tribute to those 90s 16mm dark comedies (Slacker, Solondz, Zwigoff etc.) and as a reminder on how vital the stories of the underground and counter culture are for modern cinema (if we still have something as a counter culture?), in an era were everything it's a formula of a formula, even on the indie scene. Sometimes it feels a little bit like a calculated homage, but refreshing enough for a modern American coming of age film, with anarchic vibe, bizarre and unexpected scenarios, but too real to be considered just a plane oddball comedy, plus no political correctness bs! Directed by Owen Kline, the young actor of Noah Baumbach's brilliant The Squid and the Whale (2005) and produced by the Safdie brothers. I could watch Funny Pages on a double feature with the underrated Sorry to Bother You (2018), or with a most obvious choice like American Splendor (2003) or other films about renegaded comic artists. “If you wanna get some place you gotta be harder on yourself.” Funny Pages is a darkly funny coming-of-age story of a teenage cartoonist who rejects the comforts of his suburban life in a misguided quest for soul. After dropping out of high school and finding a job as a typist for a public attorney, Robert discovers his boss’s client might just help him in the world of comics. This was a fairly quiet release, especially from a big indie company like A24. With only limited knowledge on the story, this was a blind watch for me. For a directorial debut from Owen Kline, this shows so much promise for his next works. Kline crafts this incredibly uncomfortable story and energy that lingers long after. Everything about it feels like something you shouldn’t be seeing, even the most innocent scenes. What I think is very impressive is the style. This feels and looks like an underground film from decades ago. I haven’t seen anything that looks quiet like this in a while. It really pulled me in. His writing is hilarious but the kind where you don’t know if you should be laughing or not. Something about this project feels bold. A good portion of this follows a loose plot. We’re never really sure where it’s going to go or if it needs to get anywhere. This works with a majority of the scenes, but as the plot builds more it simultaneously hurts this along with the pacing. The 80 minutes, which is already short, fly by when it hits those right notes, but feel longer than they need to when it misses the mark. Today I watched Funny Pages, a coming of age comedy about a teenage cartoonist who rejects the comfort of his suburban life in a quest for soul and artistic inspiration. Of all the films that A24 has released, I'm surprised that they hardly advertised this film at all. I get that it has outsider appeal due to its sense of humor and approach towards the common tropes that coming with these types of films. Given that this was produced by The Safdie Brothers, it certainly has this raw, grimy, and human approach that prevents this from having mainstream appeal. It even has a cameo from Buddy Duress. However, this was the directorial debut of the public masterbating kid from The Squid and the Whale. While I wouldn't consider this a total laugh riot, there were a couple moments that got some huge laughs out of me. The obvious influences from the works of Daniel Clowes and Robert Crumb gives this a feel that isn't too far off from the films of Terry Zwigoff. If you liked stuff like Ghost World, Art School Confidential, and even Bad Santa, I think you should check this one out. Currently out in limited release and on demand. Funny Pages is an unique approach to the coming of age story, providing a truly cynical approach on growing up, but this ultimately prevents it from being a memorable entry into the overcrowded genre. I’ve said it before and I will say it again: I am incredibly hit or miss with A24 productions. Their championing of independent filmmakers and allowing them to see their vision through fruition without interference is a rarity in today’s day and age where far too many headlines out of Hollywood speak of studio inference and dampening of creative freedom. On one hand, they have created some of the most unique and memorable films of the past decade with hits such as Ex Machina, Midsommar, and Minari that I will never tire of watching. But at the same time, many of their films have failed to connect with me as the filmmaker’s vision or story has not been my cup of tea. And unfortunately, that is what Funny Pages ended up being for me. There is nothing bad or weak about Funny Pages, it was just not a film I particularly enjoyed. The film follows Robert, an aspiring teenage comic book artist who, against his parents’ wishes, drops out of high school and begins to make his own way in the world. This leads him to his first job, as an assistant for a public defender, where he meets an array of interesting characters. However, when one of these individuals has work experience in the comic book industry, Robert blindly sets himself on a misguided journey to chase his dreams which will teach him a tough life lesson. So often, coming of age stories are wrapped up in an optimistic story of fun and adventure, with an emotional message in the final act. However, Funny Pages takes a very cynical view on growing up. We have a character that is difficult to like, who borders on being an asshole, which is fine for this type of plot as it can allow for great growth.
