More memories from an incredible journey through the #grandcanyon Our descent onto the South Kaibab trail started a little after 7am with temps in the low 30s. The trail was sloppy and slick from the snow/rain the night before. The descent was breathtaking but cautious--one wrong step and it could lead to a nasty spill. A quick lunch and hydration at #phantomranch and then it got real. A nonstop climb of over 4300 feet including the aptly named Devil's Corkscrew. The last 3 miles are the most intimidating and brutal of anything I've ever done-- climbing 2120 feet on seemingly never ending switchbacks. Fellow first timer Matt Noble and I went into survival mode and took turns being motivator and instigator. We finally reached the top to cheers and cold beers courtesy of @jkrause1313 It was an experience unlike anything else and guess what? Next year I'm going to do it all over again!!! @hoka @therabody
Took about 2.5 years for us to visit #grandcanyonsouthrim #grandcanyon since our initial visit to #grandcanyonwestrim. We were thrilled to see the #donkey going down to #phantomranch on our way down the South Kaibab trailhead. We had an amazing time watching the sunset at Hopi Point and saw the sunrise at Yaki Point. The Bright Angel trailhead was breathtaking but was open for only a half mile. Next visit to the north rim to complete our Grand Canyon National Park visit.

Day 3, we hiked from Phantom Ranch to Cottonwood Campground ⛺️ which you’re able to see “the box” along the way. It was certainly as beautiful as everyone says. This is about the time we decided the park signs were bullshit and started saying “is it Grand Canyon miles or AllTrails?” 🤣 What was suppose to be 7 miles, ended up being more like 9. The canyon floor temps stayed in the 90s and you really feel it burning down on you in the afternoon. When we finally got to camp we were informed there was a water break and they were cutting off water for our camp and the one after. Very disappointing news as the filters we have and everyone else’s were clogging due to silt in the water. Luckily, a camp across from us let us use their gravity filters which seemed to be doing well despite the water debris. Once we made it down to the Colorado River we crossed over the Silver bridge to get to Bright Angel campground to set up camp and over to Phantom Ranch for their world famous lemonade, some beers and scored a dinner reservation. Temps were in the 90’s when we arrived so we spent some time in the stream and got to catch the mules arrive as well as some other wildlife. Tons of trail runners were doing Rim to Rim so the place was hopping with activity. Full moon kept us from seeing much in the way of stars but the bats were out in force. Had to get a good nights sleep for the hike out of the canyon the next morning. #brightangelcampground #phantomranch #rimtoriver

In all the times I have been down (and up) from Rim to River in #grandcanyonnationalpark I have never run into any #mules like the train @jasonwhittaker and I got to see. Admittedly, that's because nearly 100% of my trips ARE NOT on the Corridor Trails where they're allowed and my 1 other trip up the #southkaibabtrail was in total darkness as part of completing the #arizonatrail (I also saw 0 people for the entire S Kaibab Tr for that day, which is obviously a rarity). #phantomranch is part of a dying breed of Americana STILL relying on mules and their Packers to bring supplies and Guests down from the South Rim nearly a vertical mile above. They are part of the Legacy of Grand Canyon Nat'l Park and so long as I don't have to dodge them too often, a part that I think is pretty amazing! MANDATORY... don't forget it! As many hikers know hiking out of the Grand Canyon or off of any mountain isn't an option, it's mandatory. This was an incredible experience of a lifetime! Down S. Kaibab Trail to Phantom Ranch for a night and out Bright Angel . Steve finally got selected in the lottery for a night after over a year and a half of waiting. So, even though we've been to the Grand Canyon twice before hiking each of these trails, this was special. 7.5 miles down S. Kaibab, my knees didn't want to bend anymore (another situation hikers are familiar with). 8 hours of sleep in an air-conditioned cabin helped. Up Bright Angel 10.8 miles was grueling but so worth every painful second. Last night, if you had asked me if I wanted to hike in the Grand Canyon again, I would have told you, no, but... you really never know. Pushing your body beyond its limits is a pretty incredible experience when you look back on the memories. 𝗥𝗶𝗺 𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗶𝗸𝗲, 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝟮 We got to the river feeling really good. We weren’t too hot and had a lot of energy It really is amazing to think of how the river created this huge whole in the earth! Right after we crossed the bridge we got to see a mule train- this was probably my favorite part of this section of the trail!! Phantom Ranch was cool. Nothing too exciting but a nice place to sit, eat and rest up before the climb out. We also re-packed our packs and changed into clean socks!! (It’s the little things sometimes) We got the lemonade- if you have a wonky tummy like me I’d skip it. We also mailed a few post cards while we were there. The river is pretty brown. We lucked out with the temps with highs only in the low 70’s. It can be uncomfortably warm at the bottom so we were very happy. Tune in tomorrow to find out about the climb out up Bright Angel. This weekend, I did an incredible thing. This weekend, I stepped up to the challenge and joined a group of 15 people who hiked the Grand Canyon. 15 miles on the South Kaibab trail to Phantom Ranch and back up. For those of you who know me, I am an active individual, yes, of course. But doing this trip was more than just the physicality of the task. This journey was all about the mind, body, heart connection that we all possess. Seeing the Grand Canyon for the first time after I checked into Bright Angel Lodge was a spiritual experience. The best way I can describe it is that you felt like you were on sacred ground. As I stood on the lookout point, I didn’t want to talk too loud because I didn't want to disturb the majesty. I was so aware of my finiteness as a human, how small and fragile I am compared to this amazing place. The vastness of this natural phenomenon and the feeling that it evokes is even more powerful than when I stand in front of the ocean. I felt grounded and a spiritual connectedness to the earth that was just beautiful. I was also keenly aware that Mother Nature has been here and will be here long after we are all gone and return to dust. This is God's artistry in its most magnificent form. The hike itself was a culmination of six months of practice hikes and walks, the journey of rebuilding mental fortitude, a reconfiguration of self-image and lessons of growing self-love. This hike was a manifestation of how powerful our subconscious mind can be in transforming our lives. Here’s the thing. I am not much of a "journey" type of girl. I am a "destination" girl. LET ME GET THERE AND SIT DOWN! OK! I know that I can be impatient with myself and with others around me. But hiking the Grand Canyon is allll about the journey. This was a tremendous lesson in patience and trusting the process. I am so grateful for giving myself this mental challenge. I know that I have the fortitude to complete challenges and I have the mental and spiritual capacity to do anything this life has for me. When we got to the top, I was so overcome with this sense of accomplishment, joy, and gratitude. I wanted to scream at the top of my lungs to release

2 years ago, I got blindsided and dumped by a guy. The same guy who was a big reason I got into mountaineering and climbing actually. While I was crying at home that night, I came up with the crazy idea of day hiking Grand Canyon down to the Colorado River and back. Because throwing myself into a type 2 fun adventure had definitely been how I coped with things that last few years. I texted @lauren.teeee to see if she wanted to do it, who basically said “No idea what that involves but yes?” 😆 So after some planning, we roadtripped to Flagstaff 2 years ago today to visit my mentor’s family, and used that as our base to drive into @grandcanyonnps in the dark, shuttled to South Kaibab TH, to hike down to Phantom Ranch and back up Bright Angel trail. It was April but the canyon floor was already almost 100 deg. I did pretty well until the last 5 miles up, when I was dying in the heat and would rest at every bit of shade I could. This girl has a hard time sweating which doesn’t help lol. Took about 11h. When I arrived at the gift shop after to get a magnet (I collect NPS magnets), a fellow hiker, who took turns passing me and vice versa, and I caught each other’s eyes and laughed and said “never again”. 😂 2 days later, we both car camped and backpacked for the first time in the US, in Grand Staircase Escalante in Utah, a place I have been scheming about going back to. Been a tad busy with alpine adventures the last 2 years 😅 Today as I was reminded of this hike (thanks Facebook), I find myself wondering about hiking the full Rim2Rim from North to South one day. Just requires a lot more logistics and someone crazy enough to do it with me. After having done C2C and all the moutaineering adventures, honestly R2R doesn’t seem so bad anymore haha. E o medo de ser parada na imigração? De não conseguir entrar? Não conseguir fazer algo NUNCA foi uma opção para mim. Então lá fui eu com a cara e coragem. Sempre enfrentei os desafios, tendo clareza dos ônus e dos bônus. Hoje escolhi fotos que representam isto. Fiz uma caminhada de 11 km de cima do #grandcanyon até o #phantomranch no qual pude observar o por do sol com o Rio Colorado e o Grand Canyon de pano de fundo. Eu, amigos, uma das sete maravilhas do mundo e um por do sol maravilhoso. No entanto, não conseguiria fazer isto se não tivesse me disposto a fazer a caminhada de ida e depois de volta, que em muitos momentos pareceu eterna, para chegar ao encontro do rio com aquele fundo indescritível. E confesso, que isto mostra muito a visão que tenho sobre a vida. Em alguns momentos ela pode requerer algum esforço, mas no final, ele será bonita e pode ser compartilhada com pessoas que gostamos. At the end of last week, I was encouraging two of my designers that had hit a creative wall. We can find inspiration in so many places, and often a hike in nature is just what I need to clear the mind and recharge. This week, I’m spending some necessary time with my family recharging at the Grand Canyon. Today we made the epic South Kaibab Trail from the rim to Phantom Ranch and back in one day. We descended 4454 ft of elevation to the Colorado River and back up another 4454 ft of elevation gain for a total of distance of 14.6 miles in 5 hrs and 16 min. Anyone who has done that hike, I want to hear from you in the comments! Mad respect for you. Those numbers don’t mean anything until you’ve done it. . . With so much time to think and gather inspiration on this hike, I have some take aways… . . When you get stuck or things feel hard, never ever quit. . . Sometimes the descent is just as hard as the uphill battle, but no matter which direction you are going it still requires determination. . . Mental toughness requires positive affirmations to yourself. You can do it. . . Don’t be afraid of hard. Doing hard things increases not only your capacity to handle the next battle, but also your confidence. . . Most of life is equal to a steep climb with the hot sun beating down on you. Use the moments of shade or lessened grade to recharge for the next battle. . . A little encouragement from those experiencing the hard of life alongside you makes all the difference. Positivity is 1000% better than negativity. . . You can find beauty everywhere…it’s how you look at life that determines what you see. . . My dad passed away at the nice age of 86 today. Around age 50, he discovered a love of backpacking in Grand Canyon. Over the next two decades he and his buddies crisscrossed the Canyon on multi day treks (even the not so well maintained trails in remote corners of the National Park). He and I hiked to Phantom Ranch in 1986. Thrilling to cross the iron pedestrian bridge over the Colorado River at the heart of the Inner Gorge. RIP Dad! We did the South Kaibab Trail to Phantom Ranch at the bottom and back up the South Kaibab. It was about 23 miles including our hike back out to our vehicle (you can’t park at the trailhead, you have to shuttle or walk in). It was an approximate 5000 ft elevation change each way. We had acclimated ourselves with a lot of hiking at higher altitudes prior to this hike. Something I would recommend. It was unbelievably beautiful and such an amazing experience! We planned ahead by monitoring weather, wearing comfortable hiking gear, plenty of water/food, headlamps with fresh batteries. I’m very thankful for the experience! Statistics say that out of the millions of visitors that visit the Grand Canyon annually, very few actually step foot into the Canyon. What do you think about that? Wrapping up my Grand Canyon adventure with one last photo and some technical details! 😇 It turned out that visiting the Grand Canyon can be quite an investment 🤑 With a $35 entrance fee, it’s one of the priciest national parks in the US, but the pass allows you to explore for up to 7 days! 💸 Winter visits offer a unique experience of seeing the canyon blanketed in snow and fewer crowds, though some hiking trails are closed for safety 🔒 Plus, during winter, only the South Rim is accessible, as the North Rim closes due to road conditions 🏞️ While we explored by car, there’s a free shuttle bus that takes tourists to various breathtaking viewpoints 🚌 Lastly, I read a lot about the elusive Phantom Ranch, one of the most coveted lodges globally. February 2024✨ Three days, two nights at the Grand Canyon! 🥾🌄 Day 1️⃣: Drove from Phoenix to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon! Walked around the visitor center (Pic 1), enjoyed the sunset, and had dinner. Spent the night at the Maswik Lodge. Day 2️⃣: Fueled up with breakfast at the lodge and caught the 8am hikers express at the Back Country Info Center to the South Kaibab Trailhead. Began the trek down to Phantom Ranch at 8:37am! (Pics along the way - 2, 3, and 4). Made it to the Phantom Ranch around 2:30pm (six hours for 7.8 miles and 4860 elevation change) (Pics 5 and 6). Enjoyed the best lemonade, the best shower of my life, and a delicious dinner. Slept like a rock. 😴 Day 3️⃣: Woke up super sore at 5am, ate at the 5:30am hikers breakfast (which was incredible) and began the ascent around 6:15am with our headlights. (Picture of the best seat in the canyon - number 7). Arrived at the trailhead around 1:35, making our time up 7 hours and 20 minutes. Ahhh this was the most amazing morning! I can't wait for Lauren and Craig to see these buttttt they are staying at a sweet cabin down at #phantomranch. I really can't tell you enough how much I enjoyed these moments but also getting to know them and walk around the canyon together. Lauren was wearing a rainbow of color and we talked about the colorful wedding dress she dreamed of. I knew this sunset was especially for her. It was so full of vibrant color reflecting her personality. I heard her say when they got engaged that they were going to go to all the national parks together. Although they are busy working and haven't been to many yet, they are already dreaming of being married at a national park and seeing all of the parks throughout the years they are together. So many more thoughts and little nibbles to share but this was a really amazing morning and I am so thankful that this is my life and I get to document these moments for you.
