Garwood Dam & Wildhorse Tanks - Saguaro National Park ..... 💦 Our Itinerary: Tennis buddy Ken & I were on a quest to find both water & wildflowers in Arizona, and this hike delivered in both respects. Our first water crossing was a seasonal stream with a beautiful crested saguaro near the streambank. From there, the elevation & sweeping views increased as we approached the old Garwood Dam. The views of Wildhorse Canyon from atop the dam were absolutely incredible. The short spur to the Wildhorse Tanks was well worth it, to see the beautiful pools & cascading water over the rust-red rocks. 🥾 Adventure Description: The hike is easily accessible, with a parking lot along E Speedway Drive, near the northwestern corner of Saguaro East. Our figure-eight loop took us 5.3 miles with just 560' elevation gain. The Garwood Trail was rather uneventful, allowing us to focus our attention on the wildflowers. Once we turned onto the Carillo Trail, the panoramic views of the canyon, Tucson & the Catalina Mountains were all jaw dropping. We closed our loop by following Wildhorse Trail back to the starting point. 💡Pro Tips: I like to personalize any hiking adventure, and this one was no exception. It was warm that day, so I made sure to get in the water, both behind the dam & in one of the tanks that had its own waterfall. So here's my pro tip: go swimming, splash, play, relax or just feel the water flow over your body. Allowing myself to do unique things keeps alive my inner child & makes the experience truly memorable. During a recent hike in the Sonoran desert, I found myself utterly mesmerized by the Saguaro cacti that dotted the vast landscape in every direction. In that state of fascination, I realized how the towering presence of these cacti was just another way for Mother Nature to cleverly impart invaluable wisdom.🙏 Amidst scorching sun and unforgiving conditions, the Saguaro cacti stand tall, showcasing their power of adaptability and resiliency even when the odds seem insurmountable. They thrive where others falter, reminding us that resilience isn’t just about weathering storms; it’s about thriving in spite of them.💪 Learning that it takes decades for a Saguaro cactus to reach it’s full height of 40+ feet and it takes around 75 years for it to gradually produce it’s first “arm” 😲 is a testament to the power of patience and perseverance in creating a lasting impact. These beautiful giants, at 95-100 years in age, a saguaro cactus can reach a height of 15-16 feet, and could start to produce its first arm. By 200 years old, the saguaro cactus has reached its full height, reaching upwards of 45 feet tall. An adult saguaro is generally considered to be about 125 years of age. It may weigh 6 tons or more and be as tall as 50 feet. Super private and the road was accessible but a bit rough for Cosmos. Weather was perfect and I enjoyed bikini day wear every day! I was pretty sad coming to Az to learn that Saguaro Cacti don’t grow much north of Phoenix because they’re… picky… or shall I venture… prickly. They don’t do well in areas where it freezes or gets too cold for over 24 hours it seems. Tanner looked and saw there was some growing around an hour south of Sedona. So we said screw it we came this far. As the GPS estimated 3 minutes to our trailhead, I was doubting I’d see any. We went down a steep grade and suddenly there was hundreds of them majestically waiting to be photographed.
