Bittersweet love-letter to our elders. The Farewell tells the true story of a family whose matriarch is diagnosed with cancer, but the family opts to not tell her - the belief is that the cancer isn’t what kills you, it’s the fear, thus allowing her to live out the rest of her life in peace. They arrange for a wedding to take place between one of the grandchildren and his very new girlfriend, so that the family has an excuse to come together and see her (at least) one more time. The movie shows how everyone is trying to cope while face-to-face with her and the results are often funny, but expectedly sad. It definitely hit me harder this time around than the first time I saw it when it was released in 2019. It’s a very happy kind of sad though. That kinda covers it. Definitely recommend watching if you need a feel-good cry (and don’t mind reading subtitles). #thefarewell #gaymoviebuff

페어웰(The Farewell, 2019) 'Based on an actual lie?’ 단어적 모순처럼 영화는 캐릭터들간 감정이입에 있어 심각한 구멍(?)을 간직한 채 영화는 시작한다. 서로가 멀리 떨어져 낯설게 살아가는 가족들이 어머니의 심각한(?) 병환을 이유로 하나씩 모여든다. 중국태생이지만 이젠 스스로가 ‘미국인’으로서 살아간다는 장남(빌리의 아버지)과 어디서든 ‘중국인’임 잊지 않겠다는 둘째 아들까지…. 이들이 모인 공식적인 이유는 사촌의 결혼식이지만 이 또한 구실로 만든 허구적 세팅이라고 밝힌다. 영화엔 중국인, 난데없이 불려온 일본인, 이젠 중국말이 익숙하지 않을 정도로 미국인이 된 손자(빌리)까지. 영화는 이렇게 조금은 낯선 관계들로부터 시작하지만, 불편하지 않은 진짜 가족(?)이 되어가는 그런 이야기로 전개된다. 사실 어찌 놓고 보면 세팅이 뒤죽박죽이고 조금은 맹랑한 접근을 택하지만 다가오는 어머니의 죽음을 놓고 서로 마주하게 되는 서로의 이해방식, 그것이 동서문화일 수도 있고 세대 간의 차이일 수 있지만 한 번쯤 고민하게 되는 진지한 접근과 고민이 내내 반복해서 이어진다는 것이다. 상당한 몰입도를 주면서도 이따금 터져 나오는 해학적 웃음거리들이 더해져 독특한 인상을 남기는데 다만 영화적으로 내게 아쉬웠던 것은 본 게임인 결혼식 장면부터이다. 앞서 가족 간 팽팽한 줄다리기(?)가 소위 관계망이 확대되면서 노이즈가 많아진다는 것. 이게 의도성을 가진 코미디적인 세팅인지는 잘 모르겠다. actual lie? 4.5/5 #페어웰 #thefarewell #룰루왕 #아콰피나 #가족 #actuallie

April Movie Marathon 🎥🍿🧋4.9.2024 The Farewell [2019] 👀Rewatch 🎬📝LuLu Wang[just finished watching her Amazon series Expats starring Nicole Kidman,Ji-yong Yoo, Saraya Blue, Brian Tee & Jack Huston] 🎞️Shuzhen Zhao 🎞️Awkwafina[won the Golden Globe for Best Actress-Awkwafina & the film won Best Foreign Language Film] 🎞️X Mayo 🎞️Tzi Ma 🎞️Diana Lin 🎞️Lu Hong 🎞️Yongbo Jian 🎞️Aoi Mizuhara 📼When ℹ originally watched the movie it was one of the films nominated for the Independent Spirit Award, of which I am a voting member, so it was a mandated watch. I however, have no regrets that I needed to watch this amazing movie. 1️⃣My first experience of Awkwafina was in Crazy Rich Asians[2018]. I thought she was hilarious[Bak Bak B****🤣] After seeing her performance in The Farewell, I realized what a truly nuanced & talented actress she is! She expressed so much thru her facial expressions & how she held her body. I found her performance truly memorable & definitely award worthy. She was not nominated for an Independent Spirit Award??? The film took home 2 awards Best Feature & Best Supporting Actress for Shuzhen Zhao. I am sure everyone was very happy to receive those wins but I think I will always be disappointed that Awkwafina did receive individual recognition at neither this award show nor for the Oscars😭Anyway, this is a really beautiful film. It is spoken in English & Mandarin Chinese[I truly love subtitled films] It shows the interconnectedness of generations from Awkwafina as the granddaughter to Shuzhen Zhao as her dying grandmother. Apparently this movie is based on events from the director’s life & of course I just love this fact. It just made the movie all that more meaningful. 📼In addition to enjoying the acting & the setting[China], I found the storyline very interesting & engaging. It is a character & relationship driven film that kept my attention from beginning to end.Definitely a film I would Recommend be watched & not just once! 📖STORYLINE📖 Billi's family returns to China under the guise of a fake wedding to stealthily say goodbye to their beloved matriarch -- the only person that doesn't know she only has a few weeks to live.
