Epstein Play by James Hagan Thought I'd introduce Katie to a Hollywood legend, an actress who changed the way actors were contracted by the studios. I also get a James Cagney film in nice and early into her film school. My Dad introduced me to Cagney and this film is his favourite of his. I love it as it's just a nice little film. Cagney playing Biff Grimes a man with a short fuse and a dream of becoming a dentist. The film starts with him arguing with neighbours who have requested the town band play the same song on repeat, the director then uses a trombone to show the audience that the film has now gone back in time to show you why the song is irritating Biff. Katie missed this and 40 minutes in was confused as to why Biff was talking to his Dad about becoming a dentist when he was a dentist at the beginning of the film. Note. Katie has problems with watching films because she doesn't pay attention. The story then shows his life from battling with his friend and business partner to win the love of The Strawberry Blonde played by Rita Hayworth. Olivia De Havilland plays her friend (with a bigger role) who has a monologue in the film that mirrored her life as an actress playing the bit parts deserving something greater. This film gave her the dialogue to vent that frustration and a bigger role as a strong independent woman unlike Hayworth's, character. Thought this would be the perfect film to introduce Katie to her but she lost the plot of the film 10 minutes in and got confused when I mentioned something 40 minutes in. Katie's thoughts. Stands by that Raoul Walsh didn't show her there was a change to the linear storytelling (she is 100% wrong). Doesn't like the dentist so any dentist related talk or action wasn't liked. I received a warning to not show her another film about or containing any dentistry. “The Power of Character Relationships” husband/wife Biff and Amy from The Strawberry Blonde are one of my favorite film couples as their relationship is so content and supportive and fun and loving! They meet when Biff wants someone else and Amy is purposefully off-putting in the most hilarious ways. You see it coming when Biff is backstabbed by someone he thinks is a friend, because the guy’s a jerk, but it’s still heartbreaking when he goes to jail. Amy is there for him and he works at becoming a dentist and she helps him start a home office/practice. They have a great life and it’s pretty funny seeing how miserable those that wronged them end up. Like it’s not cute enough it ends with Biff finding out he’s going to be a father. Also Cagney and Olivia de Havilland are so adorable together! ❤️ brothers Not on many lists but, I LIKE Nick and Jack from Smart Money! Nick (Edward G. Robinson) is a barber and hosts dice and card games in a back room. If they want to make someone seem criminal, they’re not doing a great job as he’s nice and helps anyone that needs it, including Jack (Cagney) who, post-depression, struggles to find a job and either left his family to find work or was kicked out. Nick treats him like a kid brother and it’s so cute! Also love how it starts with Jack in the closet (...) stealing Nick’s clothes. When Nick tells him to get a girl Jack lists all the reasons he doesn’t like women (except the obvious one) which (surprisingly) Nick seems to realize (and even teases him for) when he helps a woman/lets her stay with them Jack is grumpy about it/thinking she’s working for the cops and Nick ruffles his hair telling him “she’ll be gone soon then you can be my sweetheart again”. Jack dies for no reason (adding to my suspicion of bury your gays trope) Nick (kind of pointlessly) goes to jail and forgives a woman that wronged him. Wish there was an extra scene where they keep in touch/it implies they end up together. Nothing against Robinson but, really wish George Raft had been in this one. Happy Anniversary The Strawberry Blonde! 🎬 Released: February 21, 1941 One of Cagney's cutest films! 😍 Rita Hayworth plays the title character. She toys with men and has a different date every night. Biff Grimes, played by Cagney, is just as gone on her as everyone else. She forgets a date she made with him as easily as she makes it. Her attentions go towards, Hugo Barnstead, who's more of an entrepreneur. He's the sort of 'friend' that borrows money and forgets about it, and is a thorn in Biff's side. For as annoying as he is, the film makes up for it by pairing Cagney with Olivia de Havilland (further proof he would have been great in Robin Hood as they're wonderful together). Starting with a great scene where Amy tries to shock Biff with what kind of woman she is/so she can be rid of him, which backfires when she ends up liking him. Their happiness is interrupted when Hugo cuts Biff in on his successful company, only to have Biff trustingly sign papers then have him take the fall when his shady practices are discovered. Even worse, the accident caused by it kills Biff's father ..and HE goes to jail for it. Biff doesn't give up and studies dentistry while serving his sentence. With Amy's help he's able to open his own practice after he's released. Biff gets some revenge on Hugo when he needs a tooth pulled. Part of him wants to 'accidentally' give him too much gas, but he settles for removing the tooth without anything for the pain ..he's also amused to find out that Hugo has an unhappy marriage to Virginia when they argue their way out the door and down the hall. I can name those 10 films if you want, and just to extend the word limit of this brief write-up, but I suppose we all know about #TheThiefOfBagdad (1924), #SadieThompson (1928), #TheBigTrail (1930), #TheStrawberryBlonde (1941), #GentlemanJim (1942), #ObjectiveBurma (1945), #TheyDiedWithTheirBootsOn (1941), #UncertainGlory (1944), and so many other great films by this legendary filmmaker. Me And My Gal hasn't been talked about often, and even the IMDb users ratings don't do it any justice (maybe they are unaware of it just like I was for years), but thanks to the list of "1001 movies you must watch before you die" for keeping this romantic-crime-comedy flick there so that at least people will get to know about it. I am glad that I got to know about this film. I had a wonderful time, really. This is what a blockbuster popcorn entertainer means, and it's appalling to acknowledge that it was made in the pre-code era. Walsh merged a crime thriller with a romantic comedy and added enough drama to serve us a tasty mix. What a delicious mix it is! Tracy and Bennett's flirting moments keep you grinning from the very first scene, and it doesn't stop until the end. The crime investigation is so simple yet effective, and that Kate's angle and Sarge's sign language were so impressive. 80 minutes went by like that. Steadily and fast. Raoul Walsh must have been so proud to have made this film. I am proud of him, being an admirer of his work. This is what our Bollywood sold us in the 40s and 50s and delivered so many memorable blockbusters. It's a beautiful feeling to know the source material and experience it as a movie lover. A surprising box-office disappointment for Gary Cooper, for this version key changes were made including bringing the story from a small, more rural setting to New York City of 1900. With the music of the era, costars Olivia de Havilland, breakout star of the year Rita Hayworth (on loan from Columbia) who replaced Ann Sheridan and Brenda Marshall, Jack Carson, Alan Hale, George Tobias, and Una O’connor, Cagney is wonderful as the quick-tempered yet likable Biff Grimes. FAVORITE FILMS (DAY 1) I’m doing a series to further introduce myself. I’ll begin it by sharing my top 4 films. Starting at fourth place we have The Strawberry Blonde (1941) starring James Cagney, Olivia de Havilland, and Rita Hayworth. I meant to watch it for Olivia de Havilland but the person I really stayed for was James Cagney. He was an unexpected find, because I have a harder time developing a connection with OH actors than I do with OH actresses. But James is electrifying in everything he’s in. The Strawberry Blonde is more of a cozy and sentimental movie on the topic of love. You practically fall in love with the characters. It makes me feel all warm inside. I definitely recommend it if you’re looking for a simple, cute, and cozy movie. Media doesn’t belong to me. Happy Birthday, Raoul Walsh. . Steven Spielberg said, “Michael Curtiz is the greatest Director you’ve never heard of.” True enough (Curtiz IS great and too few can name his work) but I’d add today’s gentleman to that list. . He was born Albert Edward Walsh in New York in 1887. He began acting in 1909 on-Stage, changing his name in 1913. In 1914, he became D.W. Griffith’s Assistant and made his first feature (as Cinematographer, he’s also in it): the Kinda Documentary ‘The Life Of General Villa’ starring Pancho Villa, shot in Mexico, some of the battle footage Real. Walsh also appears as John Wilkes Booth in Griffith’s ‘The Birth Of A Nation.’ And he’d serve as an Army Officer in WWI. . There’s a blur of Silents then his Career essentially launches with 1915’s ‘The Regeneration,’ oft considered the First Gangster Picture. Then – 30 Pictures Later – there’s 1924’s ‘The Thief Of Bagdad’ and he’s really off and running. His Hit List? ‘Sadie Thompson,’ ‘The Big Trail,’ ‘The Roaring Twenties,’ ‘High Sierra’ (key in John Huston’s Career), ‘The Strawberry Blonde’ (his favorite of his), ‘They Died With Their Boots On’ (taking over Errol Flynn’s Career from Mr. Curtiz), ‘Desperate Journey,’ ‘Gentleman Jim,’ ‘Objective, Burma!,’ ‘White Heat,’ ‘Along The Great Divide’ (for Lone Pine Fans, yep, shot there), and and and. His last Directed Feature was in 1968, his last Script made into a Feature, 1970. A 60 Year Career (and he’d live to 1980). . He would have played The Cisco Kid in his own ‘In Old Arizona’ (’28) but a Jackrabbit crashed through his car windshield, costing him an eye (Warner Baxter played the part and won an Oscar). Before John Ford, it was Raoul Walsh who made the eye-patch famous, almost as synonymous with a Director as DeMille’s Jodhpurs. . Walsh and John Barrymore were childhood friends. He was married to Silent Star Miriam Cooper. He was one of the Founding Members of The Motion Picture Academy (and was never even Nominated). He was a pallbearer at Flynn’s Funeral. He owned and bred Thoroughbreds. And Jack Pickford (Actor, Mary’s Brother) said of him, “Your idea of light comedy is to burn down a whorehouse.” . And now you’ve heard of him. .

Fun Fact: Fred Astaire once said his favorite dance partner of all time was Rita Hayworth. Not so fun fact: Rita Hayworth died from Alzheimer’s Disease in 1987. Her symptoms began at age 42 and didn’t get diagnosed until she was 60 years old! She had gorgeous strawberry blonde hair, a shy but charismatic personality and a true love of dance! Rita was lovingly cared for by her daughter Yasmin Khan for many years.
