A fable known widely, and referenced often, The Tortoise and The Hare is a tale about the slow and persistent, and the quick and impatient. The most well known version of the Tortoise and the Hare comes from Aspop’s Fables. This original version has an ambiguous moral with the interpretation is up to the reader and the current attitudes of the time. In Classical times, Hare’s foolish over-confidence at winning the race was emphasized over Tortoise taking on a bully, while later European interpretations focused on Tortoise’s perseverance, asserting that the moral is 'the more haste, the worse speed'. Again, in the 19th century the fable was reinterpreted to explore capitalism through a satirical lens with the Hare being a craftsman who realizes the race is a waste of his time while the Tortoise is a capitalist entrepreneur blindly plows on andis rewarded, much to the detriment of the community. With so many different variations of understanding surrounding the fable, it really is about what you bring to the story. This Hare and Tortoise duo from Brian Yunie, however, make a very sweet pair. The speckled Hare is carved from magnesite with tiny incised claws and Brian has used the natural shape of a cowry shell for the Tortoise. With careful etching on the top of the cowry shell and inlaid lapis accents, Brian has added a wonderful motif that emulates the real shells of tortoises, and the small but highly detailed carving on the hare makes these a miniature but mighty pair. Day 6 of my January walking challenge is in the bag, with just over 3 miles to show for it. 🌙✨ Tonight's walk was another journey under the stars. No photos to share this time, but my thoughts were alive with creativity, crafting verses in my head. Maybe it was the crisp chill in the air that sparked my poetic muse. ❄️🤔 It reminds me of that humorous saying, "If you didn't take a selfie 🤳 at the gym, were you really there?" 😂 But in truth, you're in this for yourself, meeting your own goals. Showing up even when no one's watching is what counts, especially on those days when motivation is a no-show. It's the daily disciplines, those small consistent efforts, that truly make the difference—not sporadic bursts of action. 🐢🏁 I'm genuinely enjoying this challenge, and tomorrow marks a full week of walking.
