After multiple withdrawals that left only Paris and Los Angeles in contention, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved a process to concurrently award the 2024 and 2028 Summer Olympics to the two cities. On this day in 1662 the first recorded Punch & Judy Show in Britain took place In London's Covent Garden. So where better to mark this piece of street puppeteering history than at the Punch & Judy pub in Covent Garden - built in 1787 and named after the famous Punch & Judy puppet shows performed for the children of the flower sellers here. With its roots in the 16th century Italian commedia dell'arte, the Punch & Judy shows have necessarily had to update their content but Mr Punch, his wife Judy, The Babe, Policeman Jack, The Crocodile, Skeleton & Doctor and Toby the Dog live on, 362 years after they first appeared.
