I’m not the first to point any of this out but it’s kinda fun. Both The Velvet Underground and The Grateful Dead started out calling themselves The Warlocks. They released their debut albums within days of each other in March, 1967. Both got noticed through their celebrity artist patrons, Ken Kesey and Andy Warhol, who cultivated their own little tribes of freaks: The Merry Pranksters and The Factory crowd. Both bands got Life Magazine famous playing trippy multi-media arty “happenings”, Kesey’s Acid Tests and Warhol’s Exploding Plastic Inevitable. Both bands, especially live, played epic freak-outs, jamming on a song for 20 minutes or more, but also both loved R&B and Motown and had accessible, poppy sides. Loaded and American Beauty, their fourth and fifth records, were released within days of each other in November, 1970. Both are catchy and summery, with a gentle, country/folk-rock vibe and a mix of fun upbeat songs and melancholy ballads. I can't pick a favourite Velvets LP. I was blown away when a high school friend played me 'White Light' circa 1988, and they've been a lowkey constant in my listening ever since (yes, and everyone else's listening, I know). Up to my old tricks I earned my crust of bread yesterday by being interviewed for more music documentaries. I love doing these jobs! EM Productions held the shoot and I talked about the significance of the late Lou Reed, Willie Nelson, and Reba McEntire before requiring a rejuvenating visit to Shake Shack. 🍔🥤🍟Then I walked a couple of miles thru London as it was a lovely day and at Buckingham Palace there was some sort of ceremony going on with security around and posh folks dressed up and showing an invite to get inside. “We stayed at a house in Berkshires for a couple of days, and that really was a strange combination. These really straight rock guys, then there was Lou Reed and his friends: these quiet, very nice gay art people. It was great. It was 1974 and he had bleached hair. He was the East Village a couple years too early. I remember him with his iron cross hair singing “Little Deuce Coupe” and doing the dishes! He wasn’t a traditionally great singer, but Lou had his image and character. Some of the guys Steve Katz had were pretty macho and whenever they were around the house, Lou’s friends wouldn’t show. When it was Fonfara and me and Lou, they’d know it was safe to come out of the woods because the aggressive people had gone. That was great. Lou could be the most gracious person and then an hour later he would be this screaming frigging idiot. I think he played up to it sometimes, so it was hard to tell who was who and how long that who would last. Lou was such a great guitar player. That thing between singing and playing he was so cool at, but that wasn’t what he wanted to do. At the time Lou preferred to stand up and be a frontman which is why he got the guys to play everything. He wanted to be able to strut around. Of course there’s a million and one reasons why 22 years later, Flip’s “Sorry” continues to be one of the most revered skateboard videos ever made: the motley crew of trans-Atlantic punks, gangsters, and rock stars, the level of gnarly, groundbreaking skateboarding, the brilliant editing by @frenchfred but I reckon the soundtrack is equally or more important as any of those factors. I think the song in a skate part is actually the most important facet of a part. Good skating can be ruined by bad music and conversely, “whatever” tricks can be thrown over a great song to save it. It’s certainly the defining aspect that separates Sorry from the latter installments. So I’m very glad that someone out there decided to bootleg the soundtrack, which features all the various introductions from Johnny Rotten. It was really fun listening to this and visualizing every simultaneous trick and snippet of footage that transpired. Also included: a terrific sheet of stickers. It’s got Kudos and all that! Ronnie Cutrone is widely known as Andy Warhol’s assistant during the Factory years of 1972 to 1982. Cutrone worked with Warhol on paintings and films, eventually moving on to create original pieces on his own featuring well-known American cartoon characters like the work on paper here depicting Woody Woodpecker. “It was a relaxed Lou Reed who sang at Scandinavium yesterday night. The audience was only a bit more than 1000, and that was a shame. Because even though it wasn’t any remarkable concert, it was entertaining and swinging nicely. Lou Reed isn’t a singer in the word’s actual sense. He small talks the lyrics but does it in a way that’s swinging and fascinating. His stage movements are jerky and spontaneous, light years away from rehearsed *ss-wiggling from David Cassidy and company. The voice is gravelly but nervertheless holds up nice. The songs are alternately old Velvet Underground tunes like Heroin, White light/white Heat and Reed’s own songs like Lady Day and Walk on the Wild Side. Mostly heavy stuff with juicy rock riffs that makes the listener’s nerves tingle. Reed has gathered a nice gang for backup. A good bass player and an incredibly “wicked” guitarist dominates. Especially the guitarist, whose name I sadly don’t know, who sometimes pulled the focus away from Reed, with his fast, nervy and grinding solos. Rencontrez donc Koren Shadmi dans ces quelques extraits : « La plupart des enfants grandissent en lisant des bd mais elles étaient une lecture destinée aux enfants qui n’était pas mise en avant contrairement à la France. […] Vers 9 ou 10 ans, ma mère m’a envoyé suivre des cours de bd car j’adorais dessiner. Le professeur Uri Fink était également l’unique auteur et créateur d’une revue israélienne. Je suis devenu plus tard son assistant. En discutant avec lui, j’ai réalisé qu’on pouvait vivre de la bd. […] J’ai écrit de la science-fiction et dessiné la biographie du créateur de Donjons & Dragons pour des scénaristes qui s’est très bien vendu et a beaucoup plu. […] Les chansons du Velvet et le groupe constituent la rencontre entre la musique et l’art par leur collaboration avec Andy Warhol. […] Ce livre est le plus difficile que j’ai eu à écrire par les multiples personnages.
