First that it has a sense of unique place that is easily identifiable (Etna). Secondly, although medium light in color, it packs tremendously ripe fruit, lively acidity, and an aromatic quality that could eassily be mistaken for Beaujolais or Burgundy. The grape is Nerello Mascalese , the predominate red grape from that region. This wine would work as an aperitif or easily pair with a rotisserie chicken or wood fired mushroom pizza. Champagne has its Special Club, the natural wine movement has its Brutal wines: A loose collection of experimental zero-zero cuvées from different producers across Europe, inspired by the fine folks at Bar Brutal in Barcelona, Catalunya. This one is from Domaine Matassa in the Roussillon, the northern-most outpost of the Catalan people, which just happens to be on the French side of the border from Spain due to the vagaries of European history. This wine is made by madman Tom Lubbe from 70+ year old Macabeu grown on crumbling schist soils. It's a little tropical, a little mineral, and completely mezmerizing.
