While I always recommend reaching out for help when life gets that dark, here is one question that helped me tremendously even when feeling at the very sucky end of the spectrum: 🌻“What is right with my life right now?” Are you breathing? Is the sun shining? Are you reasonably healthy? Is there some person who loves you? Do you have a roof over your head? A bed to sleep in? When we are feeling sucky we tend to focus on the sucky things more. We have to make a conscious effort to focus on and remember what is right in our lives. I don't know what the city expects when they do not provide enough resources for the citizens of the First Nation. If “wise” counsel does line up with the Word of God, it is not wise. I was reflecting this week on a conversation I had recently that I may not have given counsel that was directly in line with God’s Word. I prayed on it. I pondered and meditated on scriptures that showed me that what I said did not aline with the Word of God. I had to go back and revisit the conversation with that individual because I in no way want to distract someone from God’s truth! The reason we need to know what the Bible says is because we need to know when we are being given wise counsel and when we are giving wise counsel. There are many counselors out there with much counsel. Some of it is good, some of it isn’t. If we are going to walk with the Lord, call ourselves Christ followers or Christians, we had better be seeking counsel that lines up with God’s Word! We need to be aware that not all “Christian” counseling lines up with God’s Word. We need to discern wise counsel and we can do that by reading, studying, and meditating on God’s Word, the Bible, and asking the Holy Spirit to reveal His Truth to us. We don’t need a degree in Bible or Counseling to assist others when they come to us for advice. However, we do need to know God’s Word and be willing to be challenged by it, meditating on it, studying it, and seeking wise counsel when we ourselves don’t understand it. There is no better therapy than the Word of God, the counsel of the One who made us and knows us better than we know ourselves. Seek wise counsel, that which aligns us with God’s Word. Trust Him in this.
It feels dangerous to the mind and body when there is a difference (especially when there has been attachment trauma) . A difference of opinion, perspective, narrative, belief, behavior, values, and way of living... can all signal danger. From an evolutionary perspective, we want to be a part of a social group for survival. When there is a difference... that reptilian brain can quickly perceive emotional danger. Thank you reptilian brain for offering your support AND I am choosing to respond to the innate response in a grounded space. We can become tethered to others behaviors, values, perspectives, judgments in order to feel safe and "guide" us towards what is "right". What that does is separates us from what our individual mind and body may need and want. Differences are reality. What we CAN do is become grounded in self acceptance to acknowledge what is "right" for us. When we become grounded in our "right" we can hold space for others' "rights".
