It’s way too long I’ve been talking about these legends of prog, #genesis. So let’s have a look at their second 1976 album, also the second and last as a four piece, #windandwuthering. Genesis as a rock orchestra again delivering beautiful complex, layered, multi faceted, virtuoso compositions. It’s at the heart of #progrock. Yet at the same time, and I know some of you like this album a lot, it’s not my fav. For different reasons it just doesn’t catch me as their six preceding albums did. That’s saying a lot about their discography till that point, cos there are some true gems on here too! Well let’s have a closer look… I’ve stated before, the order in which you get to know back catalogues influences your liking of them. And this one I got to know relatively late, on a tape from a friend of a friend, who first taped the B-side, stating so you start with the best things :-/. Later on bought used CD and vinyl copies both rather worn and the vinyl turned out to be without inner sleeve. So coincidentally never got me a quality copy… Secondly I don’t like the sound palette and production, it all sounds so high pitched. Personal flavor I guess but would love #stevenwilson to get his hands on this one. Well and the music itself? Yeah there are some true gems, and #oneforthevine a superb example of how great a composer #tonybanks is. Guess my fav track by the keyboardist. Love it! And what a way to say goodbye #stevehackett delivered, #bloodontherooftops and the brilliant two parts ‘slumbers’ instrumental, awesome. Genesis at its best! Yet for me there are some fillers too, like #wotgorilla and #yourownspecialway. Till that point imo the band never put these kinda mediocrity on their albums. Also Eleventh Earl and Mouses Night. Yeah they are okay and Genesis worthy, though also more repeating on what’s done before and better. Sorry to say for all you W&W fans. The album ending strong with #afterglow that especially live works brilliantly. Well to end. Setting aside my remarks. Of course it’s a great album, and exemplary prog. Love the highlights. Yet after the row of six superb predecessors, as a whole for me this one a bit less brilliant. . .
Genesis - Wind & Wuthering (1976) This was the bands eighth studio album, and the last to include guitarist Steve Hackett as he left right after the recording of this album. Steve contributed more to this album then any other before then, and pushed for more of his written material to be included in future Genesis albums, but the band refused. This was also keyboardist Tony Banks favorite Genesis album. Recording was done fairly quickly in late 1976, and the band toured the following year with the introduction of drummer Chester Thompson as a second drummer. The only single released from the album was the bands first charting single in the US with “Your Own Special Way”. Today in music: The Silent Sun by Genesis from the 1969 album From Genesis to Revelation. Released 55 years ago today, it was the band’s first album and one of only three not to feature Phil Collins. It was recorded when the band’s members, including Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford, were still school students at Charterhouse School in Surrey. The album was not a success and failed to chart during its initial release having sold just 650 copies. It finally appeared in the top-200 in 1974 but never rose higher than No.170 in the US. A Winter’s Tale. 1977. I wonder. How many of us of a certain age can pinpoint where we were and exactly what we were doing 47 years ago to the day? The evening of Sunday 16th January 1977. North East England. Dark. Icy. Bitterly cold. Worse still, Genesis, who had just released ‘Wind & Wuthering’ in the last month, were playing two sell out shows at Newcastle’s City Hall. And I didn’t have a ticket for either night. God only knows why not. I certainly would have tried to get me hands on one. Undeterred. My college friend, Dave Forrest, and I decided to chance it. My Dad, ever my hero, drove us both the 12 miles or so up to Newcastle. Neither of us having tickets, we thought an early start would be a good idea. Dad dropped us off more than two hours before showtime. The plan was simple. Surely the City Hall had a few returned tickets. Or a couple of face value spares. Not a prayer of course. Time crept on. We hung around outside the City Hall front doors. Frozen stiff, both of us. There was a plus though. Through the entrance doors we caught glimpses and sounds of the band’s warm up and soundcheck. ‘…In That Quiet Earth’ as I remember. We both caught the briefest sight of Steve Hackett playing as someone passed through the theatre entrance door. We both idolised Genesis back then. But neither of us had seen the band play live before. Showtime was literally upon us. The crowd of lucky ticket holders that we’d seen build up outside waiting for door opening had mostly all filtered into the hall. We looked on enviously. Beaten. Not totally though. There was always the following night’s show to keep up our sleeves. And then. A couple of touts. Selling separate single tickets for the night. One at the face value of £1.75. The other dug his heels in at 2 quid. Minutes before the band were due on stage we snapped up both. I handed two whole pounds over. Letting Dave have the £1.75 ticket. He vowed to split the difference after the concert. There wasn’t time now. Not that I hold grudges. But I can’t recall ever receiving that twelve and a half pence back from him. We had to sit separately that night. But we were in. Our first ever Genesis show…

"Justamente los términos «Wind» y «Wuthering» originalmente iban a ser los títulos de las piezas que se terminaron llamando «Unquiet Slumbers for the Sleepers» e «In that Quiet Earth», respectivamente, ya que estos últimos nombres provienen calcados de una línea del capítulo final del libro. Además, «Afterglow» tiene algunas líricas que nos remiten claramente a dos personajes del libro: Heathcliff (el novio) y Cathy (la novia) y al drama que enfrentan al tener que separarse. Nunca sabremos si la idea original del álbum era recrear (o no) totalmente la novela de Bronte, o si la banda finalmente decidió, en algún punto, desechar el concepto en medio del cambio radical de gustos de las masas a favor del new wave, punk o reggae". Genesis. Wind & Wuthering. Released on Charisma, Friday 17th December 1976. Halcyon days indeed. I love playing Wind & Wuthering when outside is bitterly cold. Icy. Hint of snow in the air. That’s how I bought it and first played it. Sometime during that festive in-limbo week between Christmas and New Year, 1976. Sometime in between studenty parties and not-necessarily-legal local pub visits drinking nutty, dark McEwans Scotch. Halcyon days indeed. I digress. Wind & Wuthering was the second Genesis studio release that year. Exciting times not just for Al Dickson the South Shields business studies student, but for Genesis the band too. In the new year of 1977 they were about to embark on what would become one of the band’s successful world tours. The big time was seemingly just around the next corner for the new quartet line up. A tinge of sadness is, of course, that this beautiful album turned out to be Steve Hackett’s Genesis studio farewell. As I write this. I’m playing my 47 year old Wind & Wuthering LP. As actually I do quite regularly. There’s a short crackle on All In A Mouse’s Night. But that’s ok. It’s an authentic 70s scratch. The cover as you can see is a little rough around the edges these days. But, hey. Today, former Free and Bad Company singer, songwriter Paul Rodgers turned 74 years old. Over his career, Rodgers was also a member of the Firm, the Law, and Queen + Paul Rodgers. He was also invited to be a part of two remarkable gigs: as the singer of the Doors following Jim Morrison's death in 1971, and to replace Ian Gillan in Deep Purple in 1973. Neither of these materialized, though for different reasons. Hace 47 años se lanzaba "Wind & Wuthering" de Genesis @genesis_band , el último álbum de estudio del grupo con @stevehackettofficial en guitarras, sin contar el EP "Spot de Pigeon" salido algunos meses después. El segundo álbum, tras la partida de @itspetergabriel consolida el sonido del nuevo Genesis, mostrando en sus primeras trazas de lo que será la banda a lo largo de los '80, con bastante sintetizador, melodías pegajosas y líricas que se tienden a alejar progresivamente de todo lo fantástico y mitológico. En todo caso, "W&W" sigue siendo un excelso disco de rock progresivo clásico. Es imposible, al hablar de Wind & Wuthering, omitir cómo se produjo la nueva fragmentación del grupo. Steve Hackett sintió durante la grabación del disco que todos sus aportes eran sistemáticamente rechazados en favor de las composiciones de Banks. Hackett quería mantener la senda de un sonido más complejo; sin embargo, Banks apostaba por “relajar” las canciones. En este contexto, Collins y Rutherford optaron por apoyar la propuesta de Banks. Es necesario destacar también que el comienzo de la gira para promocionar el disco incluyó por primera vez a Chester Thompson en la batería; a mediados del tour tocarían en Brasil, siendo su primera incursión en Sudamérica. Al finalizar la promoción, Hackett abandona Genesis. "W&W" sigue siendo un disco clásico de Genesis que apuesta a lo grande, incluso el mismo Banks declaró que sentía el disco “pesado y complejo”. Con una sobria y bellísima portada de Hipgnosis, "Wind & Wuthering" será el disco que inaugura los primeros tintes de lo que se vendría como “Genesis-manía” en los EEUU. El título nace del nombre previo del tema "Eleventh Earl of Mar" (The House of the Four Winds) y de “Wuthering Heights” de la escritora Emily Brontë. Las mismas “cumbres borrascosas” que convertirían a Kate Bush en una estrella galáctica.
