An afternoon with the collective, incredibly healing & positive despite the tragic reason for coming together. Heard @laurareedmusic for the first time but DEFINITELY not the last! “Lately I have been preoccupied with my losses,” says Nashville-based blues musician, poet, and storyteller Adia Victoria, who curates this month’s People’s Picks playlist. “Not the concrete fact and circumstance of these losses, but rather the way I lack a clear assailant at which to aim my grief. The official medical term for this kind of loss is ‘ambiguous loss’ but I would just call the Blues. After all, spectacular loss, so breathtaking in its scale, is the bread and butter of the Blues. The fourteen songs I featured from the Smithsonian Folkways archives are clear examples of that kind of haunting ‘everywhere and nowhere’ unease that keeps the Blues at the forefront of our cultural imagination. These songs exemplify the pain that has no place and no name; the kind of pain so wide in its reach that all of God’s creation—from the sun, the moon to the weeping willow, could be indicted as co-conspirators in our suffering. For my birthday we took in the amazing concert given by hometown but now global recording artist Rhiannon Giddens, a Pulitzer Prize-winner for her opera Omar, MacArthur Genius Grant recipient and recent inductee into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences—not to mention 2 Grammy Awards :) When not touring the world, she lives in Limerick Ireland but still comes home occasionally for special events like this one, sold out at Greensboro’s historic Carolina Theatre, where she was joined by her sister for the finale. Bluesy singer-songwriter Adia Victoria opened the evening and introduced Rhiannon’s eclectic and high energy mix of folk, roots, gospel, zydeco, country and bluegrass with her signature banjo and stellar backup band including Francesco Turrisi on accordian and jazz organ. It’s not every day I get to make a poster for a Pulitzer Prize and MacArthur genius grant winner! I’m very honored to design and print a poster for @rhiannongiddens and her @theryman headlining debut. I carved a new background inspired by old hand painted banners, which felt fitting for the sound of many of her tunes. But it also reminded me of protest banners of the past, and connecting with Rhiannon’s social activism and historically inspired songs. I then included some crows and feathers for imagery, referencing her song “We Could Fly”. When I went back home, I felt my emotional well swell in abundance. I was like a sponge underwater, but I had no idea I was run dry beforehand.
