#straightfromtheheart Detective Sergeant Gish arrives at the crime scene – The Rise – to investigate the brutal murder of young black night concierge Dwayne Hogarth in the lobby of the luxurious residential apartment along with Detective Inspector Jack Milton. The suspects are obvious: the residents of the apartment, composed of an actress, a Russian industrialist, a Middle Eastern royal princess, a career criminal, and an art dealer, along with the wily owner, Allan Franklyn, who lives in a duplex penthouse in the same apartment. As the search for the mystery murderer deepens, each and every one is probed. Both Gish and Milton note their background and how close they were connected to Hogarth, leaving no stone unturned. Along the way, they find a second body of an unknown man in the boot of the Russian’s Bentley in the basement of the apartment. The case now takes a complete shift as both detectives are left clueless to start their inquiries with a fresh set of who(s) and why(s) to find the criminal. They do not get any technological help in the form of CCTV camera footage, as the system was down for the entire night of the murder. Gish is perplexed by the turn of events, so how do she and her partner find the perpetrator? Do read this short story if you want to know the murderer. Otherwise, just skip it. This short story is nothing new to the crime murder investigation drama genre – a typical whodunit with multiple suspects and eliminating each until narrowing down to “that” true criminal. Being an ardent lover of short stories, I was excited to read this story, but it wasn’t neither interesting nor entertaining, to say the least. An absolute drag of a story, with too many characters involved in this insipid crime drama. It was never promising, to say the least. This is my first read of this famous author, and it was not a great beginning, though.

Nos dias 04 e 05 de dezembro, aconteceu a Conferência Estadual de Educação da Bahia – 2023, realizada pelo Fórum Estadual de Educação da Bahia (FEE-BA), em parceria com a Secretaria da Educação do Estado (SEC), em Salvador. O tema da edição extraordinária da COEED foi “Plano Nacional de Educação 2024-2034: Política de Estado, Direito à Educação, Diversidade e Justiça Socioambiental na Terra da Liberdade”. Na segunda-feira, 27 de novembro, uma comitiva do campus dos Malês - composta por docentes e discentes - e a diretoria da Apub visitaram os campi da Unilab no Ceará. Participaram a presidenta e vice-presidenta da Apub, Marta Lícia Teles e Clarisse Paradis; as professoras Juliana Dourado e Sabrina Balsalobre; e as estudantes Hulda Calala e Iyamidú Cruz. O grupo também participou de audiência com a reitoria e participou de uma roda de conversa, em conjunto com a AdUFC, sobre os desafios da multicampia da Unilab e em solidariedade às lutas do Campus dos Malês. O objetivo das ações foi dar visibilidade ao campus de São Francisco do Conde, na Bahia, e resolver questões emergenciais que estão impedindo o pleno desenvolvimento das atividades regulares. A falta de investimentos e descaso dos últimos anos acarretaram em problemas que passam por ausência de salas, insalubridade, sobrecarga de trabalho de servidores docentes e técnicos-administrativos, assim como insuficiência das políticas de assistência estudantil. Manche von ihnen hatten auf der Flucht vor vorrückenden feindlichen Truppen eine wahre Odyssee hinter sich. Deshalb die Verdrängung? Es gab bei den drei Waffengattungen der Wehrmacht mehr als 500 000 Frauen. Sie bedienten teilweise (ca. 45 000) Suchscheinwerfer und sogar die Flaks. Das war nicht ungefährlich und passte eigentlich nicht zum NS-Frauenbild. Leider wurden diese Frauen und Mädchen nach dem Krieg von der Gesellschaft vergessen. Warum meldeten sich damals junge Frauen freiwillig zum Kriegsdienst? Ein paar Gründe habe ich im Roman angerissen. Diese reichten von dem Wunsch nach einem besseren, abwechslungsreicheren Leben, dem, in fremde Länder zu reisen oder eine angesehene Tätigkeit auszuüben, bis hin zu der Überzeugung, das Richtige zu tun. Versprochen wurde den Helferinnen eine wunderbare Gemeinschaft mit ihren Kameradinnen. Meine Recherche ergab, dass dies größtenteils der Fall war. Einige Frauen lockten zudem die schicken Uniformen mit dem »Schiffchen«, wobei sie sicher wussten, dass sie damit dem Wehrmachtsgefolge angehörten, also auch dem Kriegsstrafrecht unterlagen. Und es gab diejenigen, die einer Zwangsverpflichtung zuvorkommen wollten. Wobei es offenbar vielen Frauen gelang, sich davor zu drücken, vorrangig jenen aus der höheren Gesellschaftsschicht.

The question I get asked more than any other is how I balance writing and momhood. In an interview a few years ago the newspaper reporter asked “when will you be just author-Emily Bleeker and not mom-author Emily Bleeker?” And I told him I didn’t know because often I’m writing whilst being a mom. Like, if I was riding a motorcycle and writing a book at the same time it’s pretty likely I’d be Emily Bleeker the motorcycle author. (Disclaimer—please don’t write books on motorcycles. It’s not safe and it is also illegal ) Though it often drives me crazy that I’m asked about parenting more often than the writing business (insert thoughts on patriarchy here) I can’t help but acknowledge that sharing that part of my life lets others in my same position feel like it’s possible. I’ll be the first to admit it isn’t a magic trick but then again, parenting is never as smooth or easy as it appears on social media or in movies. It is messy (literally), complicated and challenging but also deeply rewarding in all the moments in-between. Sometimes I think it’d be easier to write a novel while driving a Harley than with four kids with six after school activities, part-time jobs, doctor appointments, homework and some special needs. But, once again, one of these things is illegal, so I guess I’ll keep working on this mom-balancing act instead. And if people want to hear about this insanity-defying creative life—I’m actually cool with talking about it.
