Congratulations to 2022 VIA | Wagner Incubator Grant awardee the Boston Art Review (BAR) on the appointment of Jameson Johnson as their Inaugural Executive Director and a bright future ahead. Yesterday, on Sunday, April 28th, the Cambridge Day shared an article about Johnson’s appointment and the organization’s history. In 2022 BAR was chosen as a recipient of the VIA | Wagner Incubator Grant, one of just four organizations selected from more than 150 applicant organizations nationally. The VIA | Wagner Incubator Grant guaranteed arts nonprofits two years of general operating support at $20,000 per year. The Wagner Foundation awarded BAR additional operational funding the following year that helped the organization take further leaps forward. “The story is that this scrappy mentality has been the undercurrent of our work, and that’s not changing anytime soon. While people think we might have a big fancy office on Boylston Street or a large endowment, I think the real secret is that there are a lot of really dedicated people that just want to make this work happen,” Johnson said in the Cambridge Day article. How I felt when I departed Venice this evening: Riding high 💪🏻👏🏻🎉🐒 (Art by @yuhongstudio) This year’s Venice scorecard: 9 days, 62 miles of walking (despite taking countless boats), 69 pavilions, 15 collateral events, and c.55 additional exhibitions. Am not sure I loved it as much as previous editions, but I still came away seeing lots of work (predominantly by artists I was unfamiliar with) that will stick in my memory. Dr Anthea Gunn completed a PhD in art history for her thesis, ‘Imitation Realism and Australian Art in 2010’ at the ANU. She worked as a social history curator at the National Museum of Australia (2008-13) and joined the Memorial’s art section in 2014. She has published in the Journal of Australian Studies and the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Art, amongst others. She has curated contemporary commissions and exhibitions and was the lead curator of Art In Conflict. Art in Conflict is a new touring exhibition of contemporary art from the collection of the Australian War Memorial. Travelling mind by Frank Björklund featured with his interview in C-A-K-E We talk about his inspirations, Frank mentions his love of comic books when he was growing up in the 60s, particularly the Adventures of Tintin series, and the Belgian surrealist painter Rene Magritte, and how he mixed these two styles. He has been painting in this way for about 10 years, alongside his black and white etchings. At first, he painted mostly with Acrylic, however in the mid-80’s he started painting mainly with oil. He describes the background of his style as realistic however the deliberation is the outlandishness of what’s being depicted.
