Last week 15 sacks of dead pheasants were dumped in the river Dyfi in Wales. The dumping of game birds is not a new phenomenon its been happening for years, and I guess it is a change from ending up as roadkill. In March last year a young, satellite-tagged white-tailed eagle was found dead on the Isle of Wight in what were considered to be suspicious circumstances. 2 other dead eagles found during that period included the one found on the Shaftesbury Estate in Dorset in January 2022, which was confirmed to have been illegally killed by ingesting an extraordinary high quantity of the rat poison Brodifacoum but the subsequent police investigation was botched by Dorset Police. A Red Grouse at first light. I saw hundreds of these birds during a 3 mile hike over a shooting estate in the Yorkshire Dales, it was pretty much a Grouse farm. I was shocked by the shear number of them. Grouse Moors = Land which is managed for one species to thrive so people can shoot them in the name of sport.= madness. Predator βmanagementβ is common place, anything (especially birds of prey) that could take a grouse is persecuted. Including the culling of Mountain Hares because they eat the heather that the Grouse feed on. π€― These huge areas of the UK are managed by land owners to provide artificial habitat for one bird! so they can be shot. π€·π»ββοΈ Imagine the potential biodiversity of this land if managed for all of our species!
