Canada Day, Banks Island July 2022 My most Canadian July 1st happened in 2022. I was flying out of Inuvik, NWT that summer, and what a great summer it was. On this particular day the weather was not flyable in the morning, so we delayed our departure until midday, at which time we launched and headed for Banks Island. On board was a 4 person group, that was going to raft the Thomsen River, and a solo hiker. The rafters we dropped off at Green Cabin, the put in point of the river, and the hiker we took further up island. We needed to find a place to land and drop him off as far North on the island as possible. His goal was to hike back across Banks Island to the community of Sachs Harbour. An ambitious plan in which he would be successful. We did our part and found a safe gravel bar to land on, leaving him to hike the tundra; the gentlemen was vibrating with joy and anticipation for his trip. When he left the plane he hiked the mile to Mercy Bay and spend his first night camping on it’s shores. Since we started our day late, we did not have duty time to fly back to base, so we flew the short distance to Polar Bear Cabin and camped for the night. The cabin is small, but comfortable, and provides all things needed. After a quick meal, I walked the tundra near the lake hoping to encounter muskox or wolves. There was no such luck that day. But the evening was beautiful, and I did find a ptarmigan carefully hidden as it was moulting and an abundance of small arctic flowers to impress even the most discerning of botanists. As the cabin and plane came into sight on my walk back, I realized this was the most Canadian of Canada Days. Almost on cue, the haunting call of a loon drifted across the water as if to impress the point even more. It really was a great Canada Day. #arctic #arctictundra #northwestterritories #dhc6 #twinotter #sharecangeo #banksisland

How do you define legacy in your family and your community? Legacies are stories of past generations that help us to define our present condition and provide clarity for our future visions. In our next issue, Angus Cockney carves the 12 Moons in stone, inspired by the moon stories told by his great grandfather Nuligak in his book, "I, Nuligak". Read in her own words Marie Carpenter returning home to Ikaahuk to witness the power of healing camps for Inuvialuit, including her own family. You will hear from the drummers and dancers who came together for the ICRC Qilausiyaqtit Regional Drum Dance Workshop, and the importance of our songs and dances being recorded and taught to the next generations. Look forward to our newest issue — Legacies — coming soon. 📸 Marie Carpenter and the scenery of Middle Lake, Ikaahuk/Banks Island #Tusaayaksat #Magazine #Inuvialuit #Ikaahuk #SachsHarbour #MiddleLake #BanksIsland #PrintMagazine #Print #Indigenous #Inuit #Storytelling #OnTheLand #InuvialuitSettlementRegion

Perfect for a rainy day…Sunny gouaches by Alexander Calder and beautiful Vanuatu figures from the Ambrym and Banks Islands, at Venus over Manhattan. Calder displayed his collection of African and Oceanic objects next to his own work in his home. There are two sets of totemic fern figures on view, the larger featuring curvilinear forms and sections of bright, hand-painted color unique to Ambrym Island, centrally located the Vanuatu archipelago. The second group features a more geometric approach to figuration particular to the Banks Islands, located at the northern end of the archipelago. Loved the fibrous texture, which looks a bit like pumice. #AlexanderCalder #gouache #Vanuatu #totem #Ambrym #BanksIsland #ferntree

After not getting our annual sea lift last year, I'm sure everyone in my community was happy and excited to see the sea lift this morning. Once a year we get a resupply barge. It brings groceries, trucks, bikes , skidoos, and sometimes they pull whole houses off. My boys will be happy to spend the day watching them unload. Always so exciting!

#vanuatu #vanuatusailing #banksisland #ureparara #sailinglife #sailingadventure #fishing

I found a good spot to fish here on Bonilla Island. I needed a spot deep enough with not a lot of seaweed to cast. I’ve managed to loose two lures and caught four fish. The fish haven’t been big enough to keep but I’m sure there’s some big cod down there. I’ve seen salmon jumping so that’s promising too. However, I’m sharing the spot with some others and they have been pulling some intimidating surprise visits and demonstrating their dominance. I’ll share the fight that went on yesterday in my stories! . . . . #gitxaala #gitxaalanation #bonillaisland #bonillalighthouse #lightlife #lighthouse #lightkeeper #canada #britishcolumbia #beautifulbc #hecatestrait #conservation #sealion #fishing #fish #banksisland

Happy Monday from Bonilla Lighthouse! I’ve only been at the station for 10 days but it feels like 10 months. I started painting on the weekend so I’m feeling refreshed and ready to learn more about operating the light station this week. One thing that is unique about this station, is the deer. There are four young deer that hang out here, keeping the salmon berry bushes in check and mowing the lawn. They travel over to the big island sometimes and I think that’s where their mother is. Maybe she left them here because it’s safe. There are deer paths everywhere that make exploring easy. Yesterday I was walking in the forest and I felt something behind me. I was startled to see the youngest buck right behind me. I pulled some salmon berry leaves down for him and he was happy about that. It’s hard to get at those ones. I wonder when the last time that wolves swam over to Bonilla Island. There’s definitely plenty of deer here for them but I suppose if Banks Island has a good population and hunting licenses are in balance, than they are less likely to swim over. . . . . #gitxaala #gitxaalanation #bonillaisland #bonillalighthouse #lightlife #lighthouse #lightkeeper #canada #coastguard #canadiancoastguard #britishcolumbia #beautifulbc #hecatestrait #conservation #deer #hunting #wolves #banksisland

I worked my way down Banks Island for 32 km into a building gale on day 5, through breaking waves with lots of water coming over top, targeting Kooryet Bay- which looked to have good shelter from the big blow from the SE. I wasn’t sure what I’d find there but was pleasantly surprised to discover a cobble beach with water source and a flat upland camping area that I cleared for my tent. The next day the gale hit with full force at 45 knots but I was tucked happily in my cozy cove. We urge for the modernization of British Columbia's Mineral Tenure Act to prioritize the rights of Indigenous peoples and environmental protection. The current legislation fails to recognize Indigenous values and rights, specifically the principle of free, prior, and informed consent, and the incorporation of environmental considerations. A comprehensive and inclusive approach to mining law reform is necessary, highlighting meaningful engagement with Indigenous communities, a commitment to upholding the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and prioritizing environmental sustainability and climate action. The impending court case on April 3, 2023, regarding the Gitxaała Nation's challenge to the Mineral Tenure Act holds significant importance in the fight for Indigenous rights and reconciliation in British Columbia. We are eagerly awaiting the outcome of this case, and will continue to provide updates as developments unfold. #IndigenousRights #EnvironmentalProtection #MiningLawReform #GitxaałaNation #BanksIsland #BritishColumbia #UNDeclarationOnTheRightsOfIndigenousPeoples #ClimateAction #Sustainability

Each year, June 5th marks the anniversary of the signing of the Inuvialuit Final Agreement between the Inuvialuit people and the Government of Canada. The Inuvialuit (“the real people”) who are the Inuit, residing in the Canadian Western Arctic, have celebrated this day since 1984. This was a monumental occasion as they were able to reclaim ownership of their homeland. This day is referred to as Inuvialuit Day! Did you know that Qiviut Inc is 100% Inuvialuit owned? Owners, Tanis Simpson and her brother Brad Carpenter are originally from Sachs Harbour on Banks Island, NWT. It is the northern most community in the Northwest Territories. This beautiful island is also home to the majestic Umingmak (Muskox). The Inuvialuit people have relied on the meat and the warmth of it’s Qiviut (under-wool) for generations. Qiviut Inc. is proud of it’s culture and thankful for the amazing gift of the Umingmak and the opportunity to share with you the luxury of Qiviut! Happy Inuvialuit Day! Lemming Hunter Pomarine Jaegers spend most of their lives out at sea except for their breeding season in the arctic tundra summer.
