Sejlads 1. Marts, 42 sømil mod Rota Til starte med var der en mild brise fra kysten, nordfra, og så skiftede det over i lige bagfra, fra vest, hvorefter at vi den sidste del af turen kunne sejle agten for tværs på styrbord halse. (Vinden fra sydvest). Det var en virkelig skøn sejlads. Vi kunne godt have sat mere sejl op, og slukket motoren, men da vi sejler i spækhugger farvand havde vi besluttet at holde motoren tændt og snige os afsted i stil med en undercover fiskejolle 😎 Så vi nøjedes med at have forsejlet oppe, og være på vagt “whalewatch”. Fiskebøjerne havde vi også lidt zig-zag sejlads udenom på de første par timer, men så var resten af turen uden fiskebøjer. Vi sejlede på 20 meters dybde hele turen, og var nærmest alene på vandet. ⛵🌞 Vi var fremme i Rota ved 17 tiden, og gik en tur langs strandpromenaden mod vest, og så den flotte strand.🌇🏖️ Her fik vi et par dage til at gå med at opleve de flotte by, og at lege med wind board. Silje og Magne fik begge kørt en masse ture, og konceptet blev udviklet med et lille skruehul i boardet til at sætte windsurf sejlet ned i, så det stod bedre fast. A quick visit to Cadiz with @lawuncorked The sea walls, cathedral and a typical street in the old city. It's one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe, having been founded by the Phoenicians around 1100 BC. My prior knowledge was limited to Drake "singeing the King of Spain's beard" here in 1587, so delaying the Spanish Armada by a year. It's located on a long isthmus that we entered via an amazingly impressive modern suspension bridge. It felt rather like the approach to Manhattan from Kennedy Airport. We are in the midst of the bluefin tuna season, and it's fortunate to work there during these dates. The splendor of the first great power of the Western Mediterranean arrived with the foundation of its greatest city, Carthage (New City) around 750 BC, and the task was completed with another city with a better settlement for fishing: Gadir (Cádiz). The strait, habitat to a variety of marine species and a double migratory passage of huge fish, was ideal for showing their great ingenuity in the development of fishing arts such as the almadraba, a traditional technique near the coasts in which a kilometer-long net is thrown in the way of the annual migratory passage of thousands of tunas, from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, at the beginning of spring in search of a cool place to reproduce. This net gradually narrows to bring the tunas to the surface, in an action called the "levantá," corresponding to the famous vision of this traditional fishing art. I had the pleasure of enjoying a delicious Marinated Tuna steak, sliced and garnished with arugula and green leaves, at a local restaurant in the beautiful Bay of Cadiz, Spain. Today in history - 29 April 1429 - Joan of Arc arrives at the besieged city of Orleans to lead the French army to victory over the English attackers. 1587 - Sir Francis Drake's fleet sails into the Bay of Cadiz, sinking between 30 and 40 Spanish ships as well as capturing 4 others. This period is known as the "Singeing of the King of Spain's Beard" and delayed the Spanish plan to invade England by over a year. 1665 - James FitzJames Butler, 2nd Duke of Ormonde, Irish statesman, soldier, and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, is born at Dublin Castle. As a soldier, he will serve during the Monmouth Rebellion, Williamite War in Ireland, Nine Years War, and War of the Spanish Succession. But in 1715, he was accused of being a Jacobite and would flee into exile rather than fight the accusations. He would attempt to aid James Francis Edward Stuart in the failed Jacobite Rising of 1719. 1696 - Jacobites Brigadier Ambrose Rookwood, Major Robert Lowick, and Quartermaster Charles Cranburn are executed at Tyburn, London, for their part in an attempt to ambush and kill King William III (William of Orange). Led by Sir George Barclay, the plan was to ambush Williams coach at Turnham Green as he returned from hunting. The plan was betrayed to the authorities and would result in the execution of 9 members of the plot while Barclay would escape to France. Today in history - 29 April 1429 - Joan of Arc arrives at the besieged city of Orleans to lead the French army to victory over the English attackers. 1587 - Sir Francis Drake's fleet sails into the Bay of Cadiz sinking between 30 and 40 Spanish ships as well as capturing 4 others. This period is known as the "Singeing of the King of Spain's Beard" and delayed the Spanish plan to invade England by over a year. 1665 - James FitzJames Butler, 2nd Duke of Ormonde, Irish statesman, soldier and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, is born at Dublin Castle. As a soldier he will serve during the Monmouth Rebellion, Williamite War in Ireland, Nine Years War and War of the Spanish Succession. But in 1715 he will he accused of being a Jacobite and would flee into exile rather than fight the accusations. He would attempt to aid James Francis Edward Stuart in the failed Jacobite Rising of 1719. 1696 - Jacobites Brigadier Ambrose Rookwood, Major Robert Lowick and Quartermaster Charles Cranburn are executed at Tyburn, London, for their part in an attempt to ambush and kill King William III (William of Orange). Led by Sir George Barclay the plan was to ambush Williams coach at Turnham Green as he returned from hunting. The plan was betrayed to the authorities and would result in the execution of 9 members of the plot while Barclay would escape to France. Rookwood's great grandfather had been a conspirator during the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. 1864 - A British force of 1700 suffer a humiliating defeat at the hands of less than 500 Maori defenders. The battle of Gate Pa was part of the Tauranga Campaign, a war fought over lands and sovereignty.
