We started exploring the city from The Hoe, Plymouth’s main seaside entertainment zone, civic space and memorial landscape. The Hoe is where Sir Francis Drake was allegedly playing bowls and saw the Spanish Armada approaching. It is also the home of Smeaton’s tower, Plymouths iconic lighthouse and many, many monuments. There are (in order of appearance) monuments to those who died fighting the Spanish Armada, The Merchant Marine, Sir Francis Drake, Every commonwealth sailor who ever died in WW2 at sea, Britain’s first woman parliamentarian, Lady Nancy Astor (who lived nearby) and perhaps the weirdest memorial ever, bronze casts of the hands, butts and legs of The Beatles (really local tribute band The Fab Beatles) so that visitors can recreate a famous photo of the group on The Hoe in 1969. What is not remembered on The Hoe and is conspicuous by its absence is any mention of the role Plymouth played in the transatlantic slave trade. The British slave trade and the triangular trade was pioneered in Plymouth. John Hawkins who fought against the Spanish Armada was the first English merchant to profit off the buying and selling of African people. His cousin Sir Francis Drake (commemorated on the Hoe and elsewhere as an outsized figure in the city’s history) accompanied him on his early slaving voyages. Elsewhere in the city, Hawkins’ colleagues such as John Sparke the Younger are also commemorated. In fact the only public memorial about slavery can be seen in the last photo - a memorial ostensibly dedicated to the victims of slavery (had to look that part up) that only mentions the role of Plymothians in the abolition movement. It would be nice to see the city council take some accountability before giving itself a tiny, bronze pat on the back. #plymouth #plymouthuk #historyofslavery #publicmemory #comemmoration #plymouthhoe #spanisharmada #johnhawkins #transatlanticslavetrade #sirfrancisdrake #andrewandelenore #monument #andrewandelenorestrollbrittania2024

On April 29th 1587, Sir Frances Drake sailed into Cadiz and sank the Spanish fleet. A 16th century miniature map of the Bay of Cadiz, LANGENES, Barent. 1599. Title: Baia de Cadiz. Printed: Amsterdam, Cornelis Claez, 1599, Dutch text edition. 85 x 125mm, with letterpress surtitle and pagination. A scarce map of Andalusia, engraved by either Jodocus Hondius or Pieter van der Keere for the ‘Caert-Thresoor’, with a text by an unknown author. By 1600 this map was being published in the ‘Tabularum Geographicarum’ with a text by Petrus Bertius, and in 1616 a new plate was engraved by Jodocus Hondius II, slightly larger and with wider borders with scales of longitude and latitude. DID YOU KNOW? The annual Totnes Orange Races have a quirky origin story! Legend has it that the tradition was inspired by a mishap involving Sir Francis Drake and a delivery boy. As the story goes, Drake accidentally bumped into the boy, causing him to drop his load of oranges, which then rolled down the steep hill of Totnes, past the language school. Fast forward to today, and we celebrate this tale with the thrilling spectacle of the Totnes Orange Races! 🏃‍♂️🍊 #TotnesOrangeRaces #QuirkyTraditions #DidYouKnow #SirFrancisDrake #totnes #englishculture #englishschool #learnenglish

For #throwbackthursday I’m remembering meeting friends and fellow Tudor/Elizabethan costume enthusiasts at Buckland Abbey @bucklandabbeynt in April 2022. Sir Francis Drake acquired the former Cistercian Abbey from Sir Richard Grenville (The Younger) in 1581. Drake and possibly Buckland Abbey itself, may make brief appearances in my next book. Sir Francis Drake, the renowned English explorer, is an iconic figure of the 16th century. Born around 1540, Drake distinguished himself through his extraordinary maritime feats and his key role in the expansion of the British Empire. Drake is best known for being the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe. Between 1577 and 1580, commanding the ship Pelican (later renamed Golden Hind), Drake embarked on an epic voyage across the oceans. He explored the western coast of South America, ventured as far north as California, and crossed the Pacific before returning to England via the Cape of Good Hope. During his expeditions, Drake proved to be a skilled navigator and a daring leader. He faced storms, mutinies, and clashes with Spanish forces, always emerging victorious thanks to his ingenuity and determination. His exploits not only expanded the geographical knowledge of the time but also solidified England's maritime power. Beyond his explorations, Drake was also a skilled privateer in service of the English crown. He attacked and plundered numerous Spanish ships and settlements, amassing vast wealth and weakening Spain's dominance over the seas. His actions earned him the favor of Queen Elizabeth I, who knighted him in 1581. The life of Sir Francis Drake teaches us the value of audacity, innovation, and perseverance. By facing the unknown and challenging the conventions of his time, Drake opened new paths for exploration and trade. His legacy reminds us that, with courage and determination, we can overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles and leave a lasting mark on history.🗺️🧭 #explore #sirfrancisdrake #goldenhind #explorer #history #seavoyages #elizabethanera #circumnavigation #adventure #maritimehistory #britishhistory #sea

On this day in 1587, Sir Francis Drake, the English naval commander, sailed a small number of ships into #Cadiz Harbour and sank most of the Spanish fleet. Drake was called El Draque, or the Dragon, by the #Spanish for his brilliance at attacking their shipping and releiving them of their gold. On 19th April 1587 – Sir Francis Drake led a pre-emptive strike on the growing Spanish fleet being gathered to launch the “Enterprise of England”. Drake and his flotilla entered the harbour at Cadiz and destroyed two or three ships, whilst capturing four more, loaded with provisions. The incident was referred to by Drake as “Singeing the King of Spain’s beard.” The damage delayed the sailing of the Spanish Armada by about a year. England and Spain had been engaged in warfare-by-proxy for nearly twenty years. On Elizabeth’s accession, her brother-in-law, Philip of Spain had supported her, rather than the rival Catholic claimant, Mary, Queen of Scots, because of the latter’s alliance with France, but increasing religious tensions, and the support by England for the Netherland’s attempts to throw off Spanish rule had led to a break-down in relations. A tale of two staircases at Buckland Abbey in Devon... The first staircase is the Georgian staircase, believed to have been built in 1772 when other alterations were carried out within the house, including the installation of wood panelling. The appearance of the staircase has changed over the years, and even white gloss was used before the Trust took on the property. The staircase that appears to be ascending within the wall is a staircase original to the Abbey and was used by the monks. The staircase would have gone from the ground floor through the different levels of the building up to the Tower. The style of staircase was favoured in medieval buildings, including castles! #nationaltrust #bucklandabbey #sirfrancisdrake #medieval #Georgian #heritage #history #historylovers #countryhouse #historichouses #historicinterior #historichouse #yelverton #devon #devonandcornwall #southwest #conservation #Abbey #countryhouseinteriors #englishstyle #Plymouth #ecclesiastical #medievalarchitecture #restoration #conversion #Elizabethan #tudor #18thcentury #stone #architecture

Here is building going on in Fairfax some 80 years ago. On the left is Sir Francis Drake Blvd. In the middle, tending off to the right is Center road (The old railway Right of Way). We didn’t have a date for this image but a few considerations helped place an approximate time period - 1942-1945: 1. Tracks were removed by 1945…or possibly earlier in 1942 for the scrapped metal war effort. 2. The car is a 1933-34 Ford Sedan. #LopedeVega #sirfrancisdrake #diegodenicuesa #diegosuarezdeamaya #nombrededios #panamá #dragontea

The #DrakeJewel is a beautiful, ornate pendant given to #SirFrancisDrake by #ElizabethI in the 1580s, or possibly the early 1590s and may have been in recognition of his efforts to defeat the #SpanishArmada. It is comprised of a cameo of a black emperor and a white woman on the outside, with a miniature portrait of Elizabeth by #SirNicholasHilliard on the inside, along with a picture of a phoenix. It is set in gold and encrusted with numerous jewels, including rubies, diamonds and a cluster of pearls at its base, terminating in one large tear-drop pearl. In my latest YouTube video I trace the history and symbolism of this incredible #TudorJewel to discover its mythological inspirations, what it tell us about attitudes towards black people in #TudorEngland and about how Elizabeth I wanted to be depicted in portraiture. You’ll also learn how it has it made its way from Drake’s ownership to the #VictoriaAndAlbertMuseum in London, where it now resides.
