🧚🏼♀️🎶 Kitty Fairy & DJ Catnip, 3ish weeks old 🎶🧚🏼♀️ It's been a busy day of bum baths, wet wipe baths, urine scald, vet visit, tests, meds, and Aquaphor. I decided to spare them the stress of individual photos. They are being tricky babies! Their diarrhea is getting more firm (yay) but there was a bit more blood. 😭 Their paneluek test came back negative (hallelujah) so we're thinking it's just the stress on their tummies still. Thankfully the Pepto like medicine seems to be working and hopefully they'll be feeling a lot better soon! They're still eating pretty well, super vocal, exploring more, and are trying to use the litter box. Shout out to @cachehumanesociety for having the best staff!! ASPCApro's new "Kitten Age & Weight Chart" gives a day-by-day guide to normal weight ranges for growing kittens in their first 8 weeks. It also gives week-to-week developmental milestones for teeth, eyes, and appearance of the head. A kitten with folded ears and no teeth is 2 weeks old or younger. He's completely dependent on his mom for survival and should be left with her if possible. A kitten with upright ears and full sets of canines and premolars is at least 6 weeks old, the youngest age when a kitten can be safely taken from Mom for socialization and adoption. Many orphaned kittens are small for their age, so look for developmental markers — not just size or weight — when estimating age. New face: Anya was a bottle baby. She is estimated to be about 2 months old. She has never hid while under my care and is very friendly even with new people. She likes to cuddle on your chest and nap. ✨ Pretty lady alert ✨ Samen vangen wij ook kleine poesjes op. Deze knappe dame was Kato, een kittentje die we samen met de papfles hebben groot gebracht. In het begin wil dat dus zeggen dat je om de twee uur uit je bed mag. De nachtshift nam ik voor mijn rekening. Robrecht gaf de poesjes eten wanneer ik aan het werk was. Zo brachten we dan Kas en Kato groot. Kas heeft het helaas niet overleefd. Zijn lichaampje was niet helemaal in orde en stierf als hij 5 weken oud was. Hoe pijnlijk dat ook is, het verzorgen van dieren, vooral van bijzonder kwetsbare dieren, betekent dat we vaak te maken hebben met een dergelijk verlies. En sorry voor de geïnteresseerde, maar Katootje is niet meer ter adoptie. Die zit al een aantal maandjes in haar ‘furever’ home. When (and how) should I supplement feed a puppy? Step 1: Weigh a newborn puppy every day. Be sure to weigh in grams so that you can see small changes in weight. Step 2: Record each pup's weight every day. In the first 1-2 days after birth, a puppy may lose weight as they transition from umbilical nutrition to nursing. After day 3 and on, it is important for every pup to gain weight every day. Step 3: If a puppy is not gaining weight, it is worth a quick call to the vet to be sure. Step 4: There are ways to encourage the small pup to nurse. For example, place the larger puppies on the teat first. Their nursing will help mom's milk flow, meanwhile the smaller pup is not using up his limited energy. After the milk is flowing, remove one of the larger puppies and place the small pup on. It can be helpful to place the struggling pup on one of the lower teats (near mom's hind legs) as these have the best milk supply. Step 5: If the pup is still not gaining weight, you can "milk" a teat by pressing your hand around the area above a teat, squeeze slightly (not too much to hurt mom), and draw your hand towards the teat with enough pressure to express milk. Collect the milk, drop by drop, and feed this to the puppy. Step 6: If a pup is STILL not gaining weight or mom does not have enough milk to express, be sure to keep your vet in the loop to make the decision on when to supplement and what to supplement. Step 6: Use a bottle or syringe to help the pup eat an appropriate amount for his age and size. Use high quality puppy formula, such as Esbilac Ready to Feed Formula. Be sure to move through these steps quickly! A puppy cannot thrive long without adequate nutrition! 🛑 STOP! 🛑 DON’T KITNAP THOSE KITTENS! When we find a litter of kittens, our good-hearted instincts tell us to rush to the aid of these fragile felines. HOWEVER- The best thing we can do is leave the kittens alone and observe from a safe distance. Mom will likely return shortly, and it’s critical that the kittens remain in her care as she offers the best chance for survival. She can provide life-sustaining milk, protection from the elements and can fend off predators. Mom is likely just out hunting for food so she can make milk for her babies. ❗️BUT: If the kittens are in an unsafe location, appear distressed or mom hasn't returned after 10-12 hours, first make sure they're warm, and then reach out to your local shelter or rescue group for help.❗️ When we take in very young kittens, someone must provide the same AROUND THE CLOCK care their mother would. This means feeding and cleaning them every 2-3 hours for days or weeks. 🚫 Stop, watch and wait! Meet Popcorn. 🍿 He is our first bottle feeding baby of 2024. He will be 1 of 500 babies we care for this kitten season. As it starts to get warmer, our volunteers and fosters will work tirelessly to care for these little infants to give them a chance to a better life. Popcorn is only about 4 weeks old and requires bottle feeding every 5hrs. We were lucky enough to rescue him before he contracted any serious diseases such as an upper respiratory infection. Sadly, this isn’t the case for a lot of kittens. 🇳🇱 Mama noemt ons ook wel eens Yin en Yang. En geef haar eens ongelijk, kijk maar eens. Lilly had vanmorgen een beetje support nodig, nadat de glazenwasser was geweest. Ze vond het vreselijk spannend, kroop over de vloer van angst. Ze had grote ogen en haar oren plat op haar kop, arme kleine moppie. Gelukkig kon ik haar daarna weer tot bedaren brengen, want dat lukte niet tijdens het wassen van de ramen. Broer Jack kwam haar op een gegeven moment halen, om te spelen. En een paar uur later trof ik ze zo aan, samen slapend in hun mandje. 🇺🇸 Mom sometimes calls us Yin and Yang. And don’t blame her, just take a look. Lilly needed a little support this morning after the window cleaner. She found it terribly exciting and crawled on the floor in fear. She had big eyes and her ears were flat on her head, poor little one. Luckily I was able to calm her down afterwards, because that wasn’t possible while washing the windows. Brother Jack came to pick her up at one point to play. 🇳🇱Jack en Lizzy (onze oudste van bijna 12), die knuffelen er op los samen. Jack kruipt het liefst zo dicht mogelijk tegen Lizzy aan, waar Lizzy hem dan een wasbeurt geeft en daarna samen al knuffelend in slaap vallen. Zeer aandoenlijk om te zien hoe gelukkig onze lieve katten zijn, hoe jong of hoe oud ze dan ook zijn. Jack en Lilly houden onze drie oudste dames goed in beweging, dus dat is alleen maar goed! 🇺🇸Jack and Lizzy (our oldest who is almost 12), they cuddle like crazy together. Jack prefers to snuggle as close to Lizzy as possible, where Lizzy will give him a wash and then fall asleep together while cuddling. Very touching to see how happy our sweet cats are, no matter how young or how old they are. Happy Thanksgiving from Stewart, our smallest kitten currently in Maeday. Stewart was discovered with his mom and four littermates in a backyard and by the next morning 3 kittens were gone and the mom was no where. We advised the people to wait to see if the mom comes back for the kittens, but after 10 hours and nightfall @blockies grabbed the two remaining kittens. One sadly died and Stewart is hanging on. He is only about 5 days old and is a strong boy.
