Exciting news! Breast cancer death rates are dropping, thanks to advancements in screening and treatment! 🙌 This announcement is particularly meaningful given that breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women in the US. Amidst our celebration, though, let's not overlook some crucial details: • Up until 5 years ago, no tracking mechanism existed for women living with metastatic disease. • Prior to then, everyone who reached the 5-year mark was categorized as a survivor. This classification was misleading, as it didn't account for those living with terminal breast cancer or who passed soon after reaching this milestone. • Significant disparities still exist. Notably, in 2020, black women were 37% more likely to die of breast cancer than white women, underscoring the need for equitable access to care and support. Yet progress is still evident: 💜 Nearly half of the decrease in mortality can be attributed to improved early-stage breast cancer treatments. 💜 25% of the reduction is due to improvements in mammography, facilitating earlier detection and intervention. 💜 33% of the decline is the result of better treatments for metastatic breast cancer. Here’s to celebrating these advancements, and promoting access for all women equally! 💪💪🏻💪🏼💪🏽💪🏾💪🏿

Charlie’s weight has fluctuated so much during treatment that at times he’s completely unrecognizable from the strong, healthy little boy I once saw in front of me. I get self conscious that people assume my parenting choices — to let him eat certain foods or watch TV when he’s feeling sick — are hurting him or causing his treatment to be less effective. I promise you; nobody wants this treatment to work more than I do as his mom. I am doing absolutely everything in my power (with sometimes very limited energy and time under the pressures we face) to help his body heal, but it’s not that simple. Cancer parenting is complex, hard and has no manual. So if you want to support us through these struggles—> ✨ Resist the urge to judge or give advice about diet, excercise or weight. ✨Be curious and compassionate. ✨Help with meals, dishes, chores or other tasks to give us the opportunity to recover and show up for our warriors every day. Some women decline mammography due to worries about radiation exposure. Specifically they believe that radiation exposure can lead to cancer development. While this is understandable. It is important to put things into perspective. The amount of radiation from getting mammogram (bilaterally, 2 views of each breast) is 0.4mSV. This number may not mean anything to you; so here are some other sources of radiation that we are exposed to that we may not think about: - The annual dose of radiation from natural background (in Canada): 1.8mSV - A Chest X-ray : 0.1mSV - Cross Canada Flight: 0.02mSV - Chest CT: 7mSv - Exposure of radiation above 100mSV is when cancer development resulting from radiation becomes a concern. Also, the benefit of early detection of breast cancer can improves significantly. The risk of a woman developing breast cancer in her life time is 1 out of 8. Of those cancers diagnosed, 1 in 6 are in women ages 40-49. So, before you decline you next mammogram, do weight the risks against the benefits. #naturopathicmedicine #preventativemedicine #cancer #cancerawareness #cancerriskfactors #cancerstats #knowthefacts #evidencebased #cancersupport #breastcancer #radiation #mammogram #earlydetection #cancerscreening

When faced with cancer, it isn’t uncommon to feel overwhelmed and unanchored. Know that there are trustworthy resources to help provide patient education as well as emotional support. One such organization is CCRAN (Colorectal Cancer Resource and Action Network). Years ago, I volunteered for CCRAN. I know as a support-group facilitator that the monthly meetings are so much more than place for colorectal cancer patients to talk with others going through similar challenges. These meetings also provide a great deal of valuable information to help patients achieve better-than-expected outcomes. It has only grown since I was last there. CCRAN's website is: www.ccran.org Other examples include (but are definitely not limited to): - Canadian Cancer Society: https://cancer.ca - Wellspring Cancer support: https://wellspring.ca - Hearth Place Cancer support Centre: https://hearthplace.org - Canadian Breast Cancer Network: https://www.cbcn.ca There are many others, if you are not sure where to go, know that hospitals and cancer enters often hold support groups for their patients as well. It can be a great place to start. Going through cancer, or caring for a loved one with it, is often filled with challenges. Know that you are never alone. If you are unsure send me a DM and I can help you find support. #naturopathicmedicine #preventativemedicine #cancer #cancerawareness #cancerriskfactors #cancerstats #knowthefacts #evidencebased #cancersupport #CCRAN #wellspringcancercenter #hearthplace # #canadiancancersociety

It is sometimes assumed that naturopathic doctors are against conventional therapies, even when it comes to cancer treatment. This, is simply not true, especially those who have had additional training with integrative oncology. In fact, we often spend significant time during our consults discussing the benefits of conventional treatment appropriate to the specific cases (be it surgery, chemo, radiation or immunotherapy), when our patients tell us they have declined conventional care. We recognize that the role of naturopathic medicine plays for our cancer patients is a supportive one. Our goal is to help our patients achieve/maintain better quality of life, and the best possible outcome. Naturopathic care for cancer patients is not meant to replace conventional therapy. #naturopathicmedicine #preventativemedicine #cancer #cancerawareness #cancerriskfactors #cancerstats #evidencebased #cancersupport #chemo #radiationtherapy #surgery #integrativehealth #integrativeoncology #naturopathicdoctor

Overweight and obesity is the second biggest cause of cancer in the UK. If you are overweight you are more likely to get cancer than if you are a healthy weight. Being overweight doesn’t mean that you’ll definitely develop cancer. But the risk is higher the more overweight you are and the longer you are overweight for. If you are overweight, avoiding putting on more weight and losing weight will help reduce your risk of cancer. There are lots of benefits to keeping a healthy weight. These include having increased energy, and less risk of conditions such as heart disease, stroke and joint pain. Research has shown that overweight and obesity causes 13 different types of cancer: -Breast and bowel (two of the most common cancer types) -Pancreatic, oesophageal and gallbladder (three of the hardest to treat cancers) -Womb and ovarian -Kidney, liver and upper stomach -Myeloma (a type of blood cancer) -Meningioma (a type of brain tumour) -Thyroid This doesn’t mean that everybody who is overweight will develop cancer. But the risk is higher for people who are overweight or obese. #obesity #cancerstats #cancerstatistics #overweight #overweight #cancerdiet #cancerdietitian #cancerdiagnosis

An article that was in my local newspaper this summer. Since my diagnosis I know of 3 other women that have been diagnosed with breast cancer (all “too young”), two ovarian, one lung, one skin but also had to have a hysterectomy because of the potential for a gynaecological cancer. There has been three deaths of young women who were friends of friends but still lived locally to me. All these girls “too young!” many before the age of 30. Plus there’s a couple of beautiful ladies I follow on here in my local area who’ve found themselves with a cancer diagnosis, breast, lung, bowel! I live in a small city and I know the statistics are now 1 in 2 people will get cancer but I honestly think there’s something going on in my area the math ain’t mathin! Where is Erin Brocovich when you need her! My bet is It’s either the local industrial areas 🐚 🫣or the fact we were all brought up on Turkey twizzlers! Following surgery to have part of her right lung removed, MaryAnn now lives cancer free and advocates on behalf of the lung cancer community. Working closely with CCS, she knows first-hand the importance of advocacy and impact it can have for all people affected by the disease. MaryAnn Bradley’s story is just one of many. ICMR issues Expression of Interest on Implementation of Research proposals to Accelerate Screening, Early Diagnosis and Treatment of Cancer. According to estimates for the year 2020, there were 19.3 million new cancer cases worldwide, with India ranking third in incidence. Cancer poses a significant and pressing public health challenge in India and is a top priority within the mandate of the Indian Council of Medical Research, the ICMR said in the interest document. India launched the National Program for Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, and Stroke (NPCDCS) in 2010, later renamed NPNCD in 2023. This programme has been instrumental in strengthening healthcare infrastructure, enabling early disease diagnosis, facilitating management, and ensuring timely referrals for common NCDs, including cancer. It operates under the umbrella of the National Health Mission (NHM) with the overarching goal of reducing the mortality and morbidity associated with NCDs. According to estimates from the Global Cancer Observatory GLOBOCAN for the year 2020, there were 19.3 million new cancer cases worldwide, with India ranking third in incidence after China and the US, it stated. #ICMRResearch #cancertreatment #researchaccelerated #cancerresearch #healthforall #togetherwecan #earlydiagnosis #cancerresearchhope #ICMRInitiative #cancerstats #mednews #globalcancerobservatory #publichealthchallenge #NPNCDProgramme #TheSpinalCord #TSC #MedNews

Screening can help prevent colorectal and cervical cancers by detecting and removing precancerous in the colon, rectum, and uterine cervix. Screening can also reduce mortality for these cancers and for cancers of the breast, lung (among people with a history of heavy smoking), and prostate by detecting cancer early, when treatment is often less intensive and more successful. Let’s talk about Cancer Rates in Women. As it stands, the three most common cancers in women are BREAST, LUNG & COLON. I think this is interesting because when we think of cancer rates in women we usually think breast (of course) followed by cervical, uterine, and ovarian. Smoking causes the most lung cancer. Indeed, lung cancer diagnoses have risen a startling 84% among women over the past 42 years – yet approximately 20% of women diagnosed with lung cancer today are lifelong non-smokers (risk factors are 2nd hand smoke, air quality, and asbestos). Diagnoses of colorectal cancer continue to increase among adults younger than 50 (for men and women), but colon cancer is the 3rd leading cause of cancer in women behind Breast and Lung. These three cancers in particular may have preventable risk factors like smoking (lung), drinking (breast & colon), excess body weight, diets low in fruits/vegetables, diets high in red / processed meat (breast & colon), and lack of physical activity. There are also disparities in our healthcare system that women face in order to get a diagnosis, which is especially true of black women who may be diagnosed at later stages and have lower survival rates (due to inadequate care). *The 5-year relative survival rate for uterine corpus cancer is 84% for White women but only 63% for Black women. *Black women have 41% higher breast cancer death rates than White women despite similar incidence rates. *From 2014 to 2018 the overall cancer death rate (per 100,000 population) was highest among Black persons. PREVENTION IS KEY: There are steps you can take to mitigate your cancer risk —> adopt a healthy diet high in fruits, vegetables & fiber, avoid carcinogens like alcohol & tobacco, increase physical activity, get screened (mammograms, colonoscopy, pap smears, etc), and PUSH your doctor to pay attention to your symptoms/order tests especially if you’re in an at-risk population. #cancerprevention #womenscancer #cancerstats #cancersurvivor #chemosurvivor

Unfortunately it is clear that things like age, location, income and race can hugely affect the accessibility and outcome of critical cancer care. For example: 👉Cancer kills nearly 10 million people a year and some 70% of those are aged 65 or older, yet older populations face disproportionate barriers to effective treatment. (Source-The Economist) 👉More than 90% of cervical cancer mortality occurs in low- and middle-income countries. (Source-Oncology Letters) 👉For white women in the US, the five-year survival rate for cervical cancer is 71%. For black women, the rate is just 58%.(Source-ASCO Cancer.net) Today is a day to raise awareness and educate yourself, hopefully leading to further changes for the better when it comes to cancer care. Between 2016-2020 roughly 1,100 Tennessean’s per year were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. This number continues to increase each year. However, Tennessee’s top three counties (out of 95) with the most individuals diagnosed between 2016-2020 was Knox, Shelby and Davidson County. Combined, these three counties accounted for almost 25% of all pancreatic cancer diagnoses, according to the National Institute of Health’s, State Cancer Profiles. #knoxcounty #shelbycounty #memphis #knoxville #nashville #tennessee #pancreatic #cancerstats #cancer

In February 2020, Isabelle Vallières found out the shocking news that she likely had cancer for the second time. Her doctor recommended surgery, but countless were being postponed due to COVID-19. While Isabelle waited to find out if the nodule on her lung was cancerous, she found comfort through our online community, CancerConnection.ca. Corresponding with people going through similar ordeals helped ease her anxiety. In May 2020, the nodule on her lung was finally removed and it was confirmed to be lung cancer. Isabelle’s story isn’t an exception – the pandemic has meant delays and interruptions in care for many. And despite our stretched healthcare system, Canadian Cancer Statistics: A 2022 special report on cancer prevalence recently revealed that the number of people living with or beyond cancer continues to grow. We know that with advances in research, compassionate supports and strong advocacy, we can help the 1.5 million people in Canada living with or beyond cancer thrive. Day 11 of #PCAM brings us some shocking stats... Sadly, New Zealand has had the lowest improvement in the one-year survival rate compared with several other countries, including our neighbours in Australia. This is why it's so important for us to fundraise for research and treatment here in Aotearoa.
