📢 April marks Testicular Cancer Awareness month. In 1979, our President, Bob Champion CBE was diagnosed with testicular cancer, undergoing a gruelling chemotherapy treatment regime. Just two years later he remarkably went on to win the Grand National. Testicular cancer is the most common type of cancer in men ages 15-35 years, but men of all ages can be at risk. It's vital if you have a family history of the disease to share signs and symptoms. Bob Champion Cancer Trust Medical Director Prof David Dearnaley explained, "Testicular cancer is one of the great success stories in modern cancer medicine. Over 45 years ago the introduction of chemotherapy drug cisplatin transformed treatment making a usually fatal disease became curable. The side-effects of treatment were considerable. Integration of supportive treatments, less toxic drugs such as carboplatin, more recent development of improved radiotherapy with for example IMRT and introduction of “key-hole“ surgery and improved PET imaging have all benefited patients. She endured 14 cycles or 70 rounds of chemotherapy, which equals 350 bags of chemotherapy drugs. She had to spend 6 days a week hooked to an IV. She battled countless infections. Halfway through treatment, Chrissy underwent a complicated surgery to remove part of her shoulder blade. Unfortunately by the time her surgeons decided to do surgery, the cancer had spread and they removed her whole shoulder blade. Chrissy then had 30 rounds of proton beam radiation therapy, which was the worst part. She said it felt like it was cooking her from the inside out. But she pushed through and finished treatment! She’s currently 1+ year out of treatment and thriving! Keep smiling, Chrissy!
