DEVON ADVENTURE DAY 1 (part 2) Following my interesting investigation of the house at @castledrogont I went on a full walk around the grounds. It was quite a long walk, but it meant I had wonderful views of Castle Drogo. My walk took me all the way down to Fingle Bridge where there was even space for doggos to have a splash around. DEVON ADVENTURE DAY 1 (part 1) The weather was still overcast but much warmer so I was able to wear my light jacket today. I toddled down to breakfast where I had a large coffee to set me up for my adventures but also an orange juice (for I am a healthy bear). Today I got to visit the wonderful @nationaltrust property @castledrogont. The last time my owners had visited was when the whole place was covered in tarpaulin and scaffolding due to the leaky roof being repaired. It was so good to see the property as it was in its hey-day. On route I met a wonderful new bird friend - did you know Drogo’s land is home to lots of lovely birds? I quickly headed inside and was able to see the amazing library and ornate furniture including an electric tablecloth that powered the candlesticks! The menu looked a bit…interesting… In the servants quarters I tried my hand at typing, and baking, before heading up to the main bedrooms where I could try on a top hat (it was too big). Castle Drogo by Edwin Lutyens in Devon is the last castle built in Britain… Built for the supermarket magnate Julius Drewe between 1911 and 1931, it is a slightly gloomy Edwardian medieval fantasy in granite. But the details are wonderful - the door latches, the bevelled spaces, the teak butler’s sink, the plate rack of dreams, and all the light that came through the trillions of windows. (See the central work island in the kitchen with a lantern above it.) It originates from Korea and grows to 2.5-5m, making a large shrub or small tree. As you can see from the photos, not only did the walls brighten up considerably, but the sun came out too! 🌞 If you are thinking of visiting Dartmoor and exploring, Moorcote is an excellent place to use as a base. Collection Bird of the Week! For week three we are looking at the Japanese cabinets in the drawing room, one with a goose and the other with chickens decorating them. They date back to c.1740 and are finished with black lacquer. Lacquer is taken from the sap of the lacquer tree and built up in applied layers on the wooden cabinet before being polished. The raised decoration on the birds is created when the lacquer is carved down around them, and then gilded to give the fine decoration.
