I still think it’s such a powerful statement to play classical music with an intention of curiosity and fun — need there really be a better reason to engage in such an ancient and complex art form? Found this picture from one of my favorite Classical Sundays concerts from 2020 I believe. Those were complicated times as far as concerts went, but we were extremely lucky @werkhallewiesenburg to have been able to continue legally playing throughout nearly the whole pandemic, since Werkhalle was an art gallery rather than an official concert hall (which were forced to close). For a time we were even the ONLY classical concerts in Berlin, which was delightfully ironic — but I only got wonderful feedback, even from those who were obviously regular classical concertgoers — even though (or perhaps because!) we were more or less sight reading on stage. Even though I don’t have the energy to organize all those concerts and humans regularly anymore, I still look back with immense pride at the amazing things we accomplished — it was an intense work and experimentation phase, where we got to push the limits of what we were taught was possible, and along the way, reclaim some measure of independence from a system which taught us that what we were doing was absolutely impossible (not to mention thoroughly disrespectful to the art form). In those days I learned that as a real artist I am absolutely free to make whatever music I want for whatever reason I want — and I can only hope that this modus operandi spread across the scene. Fritz Kreisler is regarded as the last of the great Viennese violinists and composers. Born in 1878, Kreisler was a child prodigy and had already toured the U.S. by the time he was 12. But Fritz was a man of many gifts. He studied medicine, science and history and by the time he was in his 20s had mastered 8 languages including Flemish which he learned in order to translate some of the rare books in his renowned collection. But then came WW1 and Kreisler was conscripted to fight on the Russian front. He declined to use a deferment usually granted to men of cultural significance. Not long into the campaign, he was shot by a Cossack to whom he returned fire and killed. Fritz's death was widely reported in Austria and America. But the undead violinist lay in a field hospital on the Eastern front plotting his next move. Upon returning home surprisingly alive, he attempted to revive his musical career, but since Austria was at war with everybody else, it fizzled. Post war, he once again became a renowned violinist, moved to the States and his mesmerizing, virtuoso performances lasted up until the 1960s. Itzhak Perlman may be the modern day Fritz Kreisler (they did meet once) and here he plays 14 of the Viennese master's most beloved numbers. Fritz was not a composer of long pieces, but his pieces were a delight for audiences. They are pretty and sprightly. Perlman writes in the liner notes how much fun and technically challenging these pieces are. Led by Maestro Maxim Eshkenazy, the Colburn Youth Orchestra is comprised of talented middle and high school aged students from around Southern California. Students in this orchestra perform standard symphonic literature, as well as newly-commissioned works and arrangements composed specially for the ensemble.
