Tonight, Rocky showed more stability than he ever has around a lot of people. He struggled with popping up from a down stay to sit when people were walking around, but when re-directed he was able to focus and that’s exciting!!! He showed no reactivity, only mild anxiety. For him, this looks like his tail being a little tucked, hyper-vigilance, and struggling to settle for long periods of time. However, Rocky has started being able to self-regulate more and more and bounce back from stressors significantly faster. We are still taking things slow because Rocky was never properly socialized as a puppy. I know he’s going to eventually thrive because of how far he has come in the 10 months I’ve had him, but I don’t want to push him too far too fast and cause regression and unnecessary stress. Cardiac alert & response training is going well but is being paused due to final exams in less than 2 weeks. Oles can, and Oles will, make it to spring break🦁❤️ I’m not going to lie and say that I have been a good baby musician and practiced this week. It’s been a hard past few days, and I’m in dire need of spring break next week. Burn out is a real thing, and seems like a mountain to get over. This is further exacerbated by being in a subject area that holds you to standards higher than the caterpillar from Alice in wonderland. However, as I was walking back to my dorm from a spontaneous mental health trip to target, I realized that today, for the first time in about a week, there were no clouds. The sun was out in all of its glory. That little ball of light reminded me that even though I go through periods of darkness, where I feel like I am not enough or want to completely give up on myself, that the sun will come out again. It reminded me of all the goodness from this week, from seeing underclassman friends from high school choir all grown up, finally figuring out my opt-up on Jubal’s Lyre, and getting a fancy pack of highlighters. Despite the darkness, there was light. Part of the reason why I made this page was to connect with others like me, and perhaps make them feel seen and supported. I wish you all, whether you’re a musician like me, a student, or simply someone who is having a rough time, all the sunshine in the world. Let’s talk…. One of the most daunting things about college. Failing a test, or an assignment. Something you worked so hard on, something you studied for hours and still failed OR maybe life got so busy you didn’t have time to study and prep as much as you wanted. When you see that bad grade, it can instantly create a pit in your stomach and lump in your throat. One of the worst feelings ever is getting back a failing grade. Especially in our profession where we are all perfectionists. I recently read an article that discusses “competition talk.” Some of these can look like “at least I didn’t fail”, “at least I didn’t do that bad.” The article then flipped the perspective and discussed how dangerous competition talk is. This has recently opened my eyes to some things I have said before that I regret. I now regret saying those same exact things “at least I didn’t fail.” So now I want to flip the perspective to you, imagine being the classmate that did fail, imagine being the classmate that had to choose to work instead of studying or the classmate that did study for hours and just heard someone say “at least I didn’t fail” they are secretly hiding embarrassment, shame, guilt, anxiety. We should lift our peers and classmates and provide them with positive support. Instead of saying “at least I didn’t fail”, try “how can I help you?” or “do you want to study together next time?” Provide support for them and help them succeed. So, what are some things that you can do to help when your peer or classmate is dealing with a failing score? Provide them with a listening ear, buy them a coffee, ask if they need to go on walk. College is HARD. Instead of making it harder on each other, support each other. Today is his feast day and he is the perfect saint for any student who is struggling in school and their exams.
