The peach tree in my yard is also self pollinating! It has been blooming for the last week. It is the same age as the plum, so this will be the first year we get from this tree as well. I asked about a variety that would be similar to Palisade peaches since that is what I think of when I want local fruit. Today I took the stake off this tree as well. Remember to take stakes off all your new trees after the first year. Stakes left on too long can cause damage to your young tree. Peach and plum trees have the same light and soil requirements, which is part of why we chose them. Let's talk about plums! Plum trees do very well in our climate. While many varieties require two trees to pollinate, this tree in my garden is self-pollinating. Plum trees need full sun and well draining soil to be happy. Make sure to follow the guidelines of the tree you are planting to avoid a location that may cause early blooms or frost susceptibility. This tree in my yard is in its second year, which means we can allow it to fruit! Last year we had to remove all fruit so the tree could focus on settling in to its new home. Lilacs are a wood stemmed flowering plant I always enjoy. This time of year some of them bloom and some are about to bloom. This bush is in the yard of the house that I moved into a few years ago, and it has some of the dried blooms on it as well. Any day all those buds are going to turn into a mass of purple flowers all over and my yard will smell amazing. I don't know what variety this one is because it was there before I moved in, but there is another Bush of the same type not too far away. Lilacs do really well here in our metro area and I did a little bit of research to see more about it and according to the Harvard Arboretum, lilacs are "known as plants for colder climates, lilacs need a period of cold-initiated dormancy to trigger flowering." I'm wondering if this is why mine are preparing to bloom now, after the snowstorm we just had. Besides the resources at CSU extension, I noticed a lot of University of Minnesota resources as well. If the plant needs the cold to trigger flowering it could explain why it does so well in both places. Have your lilacs bloomed yet? Have any in your neighborhood? Did you know Magnolia Trees can grow in Colorado? Every time I see one, it makes me think of more tropical places. This particular tree is outside an entrance to the Denver Botanic Gardens, and the variant is "Magnolia x Betty". This picture was taken Sunday, when the snow from Saturday had already melted. I decided to finally look up Magnolias to see how they grow here, and I learned that saucer magnolia varieties grow best here in the Front Range. Outdoor updates from the last week-2 weeks š± We planted two fruit trees: a Montmorency cherry and Elberta peach. Sadly, we lost one of our hens the week before last (no apparent cause, all other girls are fine) so we went out to buy a peach tree and came home with an extra tree. It feels right to honor her so that she will live on as a part of our micro homestead. We experienced our first loss with our flock last Spring, and we buried her deep under a tree as well. A little late, but I also pruned trees last week. Ryan used the chainsaw to take off a dead limb on the old apple tree. The American plum was long overdue for removing dead wood. Itās had a hard time being moved from last house two years ago, and Iām hoping weāll get plums for the first time this year.

Itās been a marathon of uppotting š see end for plant sale status update ā¤µļø A few days ago I got through the rest of my pepper tray and uppotted probably a hundred or 150 peppers. Tomatoes are done. Well, not mine yet, but everything for the sale haha. The kids have been helping off and on. I love these moments, and Iām glad Ryan was walking by and captured it. Makes my heart happy gardening with them and seeing them pick up on things so quickly. Daffodil season is here! In early spring, any daffodils that are planted in the fall start to come alive. Happy National gardening day š©āš¾ The day was spent in the backyard working on projects. We finished one portion of the kidās garden, and finally got to sheet mulching the first of the in ground beds, and added a landscaping timber border. I had to go through and take out sooo many bindweed shoots. I was hopeful when we moved to this house that we wouldnāt have to deal with it like the unending battle at our Loveland house, but it looks like the little bit that was in this part of the yard exploded after we disturbed the ground. Lots more work in this part of the yard, but little by little. Happy with what we were able to do today

We did a work day at the school garden today. It was in need of some love, and we are hoping to get irrigation hooked up soon. So proud of what everyone got done today! It has so much potential and Iām excited for this to be a truly usable space for the kids and teachers. Chocolate Mint is the Friday herb! Chocolate mint (Mentha piperita) is a cultivar of the peppermint family. Itās a hardy perennial in zones 3-9 that spreads with rage in any garden. If you have a sweet tooth you may want to add this one, but use caution and contain it. Not only do humans love the sweet taste with the whisper of chocolate (think Andes Mints), but pollinators love it too. Leaves are a deeper green sometimes with brown veining making it really attractive. In the summer it produces gorgeous, edible purple flowers. If you are looking for an easy herb to grow, Chocolate Mint fits the bill. It loves our Colorado sun. An interesting picture of chives for Herb week, right?! This kittyās name is Moxie and you could really say chives are an herb with moxie! Chives are very pet friendly too! Common chives, (Allium schoenoprasum) are hard workers in the garden. They are perennial, cool season crops and cold tolerant which do best in Spring and Fall. Did you know chives flowers come in white, pink, red and purple? Pictured above are white chives. The flavors donāt differ greatly, as all chives are part of the onion family. However Garlic chives (Allium tuberosum) are a different variety and DO in fact have a more garlicky taste. All chives flowers are completely edible and they are as yummy as the stalks. They are great as salad garnishes and sparkle in the bottle if you make Chive Vinegar. A great thing to know about the flowers is that you should clip them and use them. If you do not, and the flowers go to seed, the chives will happily self seed throughout your garden! Chives can tolerate some neglect in your garden. They are drought tolerant. They will grow in sun or part shade. They will be most productive, like most plants, if you top dress them with compost in the Spring. If your chives have started to produce less, stick a shovel in and divide them! Give a clump to a few neighbors and spread the wealth.
