★彡Blast From the Past 彡★ #40 (and 41) Mounties big and small. Every year I will carve a Mountie. Somewhat like carving Santa. They are all basically the same but always different. The first, smaller one, here was purchased by my collector in Australia and the one with a mustache was a commission and he's living in Victoria standing guard while trying not to be knocked over by a large cat with a large attitude. Carry That Weight This piece is carved from a piece of Pinon Pine. I'm fairly sure it is from the root due to the way the wood wraps around the rock. There are actually two rocks held within. The smaller rock is tucked way in underneath. One wonders how long it took the wood to grow around the rocks, and how long they will stay bound together. I used to live in the Kootenay region of British Columbia where Doukhobors (a sect of Russian dissenters, many of whom now live in western Canada. They are known for a radical pacifism which brought them notoriety during the 20th century) live. Dancing in a Pretty Dress It's Spring, there is no better time to prance about with reckless abandon. Sure, there are many pressing issues and much in the way of burden thrust upon us by the world. But if we don't take time to frisk and cavort then we let cynicism and despair win. We must be willing to fight for hope and dream for what could be in a world full of dismay. It is easy to call this idealistic. Better to have ideals than to abandon them. This beautiful and hopeful creature is made from an extraordinary piece of Alligator Juniper. The wood has birds-eye figuring characteristic of what occasionally can be formed at the root crown. The root crown is that transition between the tissue of the roots and the stem in the body of a tree. There is evidence that this is the center of decision making in a tree. Signals from here determine when buds break and leaf out, and when leaves change color and drop in the fall. Spoons I seem to have a love-hate relationship with making spoons. I really love making spoons, but they do take a toll on my old hands. I try to limit myself to one a day when I do make them, but I have a bad habit of breaking my own rules. Fortunately, I just acquired multiple boxes of old spoon blanks from a fellow wood carver named Elroy. Elroy used to be an urban forester in Illinois, and over the years collected and milled an amazing array of hardwoods in his work. He made a lot of spoons in his time, and cut a lot of various blanks on a band saw. There is a wonderful array of wood I grew up with from back east; Osage Orange, Sassafras, Cherry, Walnut, maples and more. Elroy has come to an age where he realizes it's time to stop and is cleaning out his wood shop. Since I don't seem to know when to stop, I'll be carving spoons for hopefully a while now. Having some blanks to start with will hopefully extend the expiration date on my hands. These are all in preparation for an Renaissance Fair I have coming up in May in Ruidoso, New Mexico.
