Dante’s View: Facing away from Badwater Basin. It’s a LOT colder and windier up here vs. being on the valley floor. I think it’s typically some 20 degrees cooler up top. I had to bump the ISO up and open the aperture a bit since I was losing sunlight quickly. It’s not the sharpest shot, but still looks decent nonetheless. Dante’s View: Overlooking “Lake Manly”, which is a temporary lake formed in Badwater Basin. It wasn’t the sunset we were hoping for based on the skies earlier that day, but the view was still phenomenal, overlooking the valley. I experimented a bit here with a preset which softened the blues and warmed the rocks up a bit, balancing the photo more. I also paid more attention to the crop to focus the image better, which you can see from the second photo that wasn’t cropped. Fun Fact: Dante’s View was used as a filming location for the original Star Wars film, representing the spaceport town “Mos Eisley”. I forgot to share a National Park yesterday because I was hiking in Zion again. Today I want to share Death Valley. We’ve been there every season and I enjoyed 3 of them but not Summer. It’s just too hot for me to enjoy exploring in the heat. It’s one of those parks that’s so spread out it seldom seems crowded. There’s also a lot of side roads you can take as long as you have a vehicle that can handle it. 🌄 This was our last sunset at Death Valley National Park. We watched it from the Dante's View and the landscape below almost looked like a frozen lake. It's actually the remnants of Lake Manly, a lake that forms occasionally after heavy rains. A hurricane hit the area last August and flooded the valley. You can see the Badwater Basin salt flats, formed from centuries of water pooling and evaporating under the harsh desert sun. These salt deposits create a mirror-like surface that reflects the fiery sunset skies above. My Death Valley field trip post a month late🙃 This was such a phenomenal trip. I learned many things, like how to write a proper field notebook, that the spring/fall is the best time to go, and that braids are the best hair for the field😂 . In all seriousness, I think my most important takeaway, was how much I learned on more general geology. Most of the things I’ve focused on have been paleontology related, and while I go through the geology classes I need/learn from them, I rarely can put what I’ve learned into field application. It was really great being able to identify geologic features and sedimentary rocks that I wouldn’t have been able to identify confidently before the trip. . I don’t even know if I have a “favorite stop” as every one had something unique about it geologically. But for those who read the news on flooding, it was really cool to see the flooded salt flats that made a lake (last picture). It’s a phenomenon that doesn’t happen often, so I was very lucky to see it. I also did kinda like the variation in rocks at Mosaic canyon, and climbing/sliding down the dolostone😂 . I also, of course, loved my alien field buddy I got from an Area 51 store, “Little Hebe” named for the crater next to Ubehebe. All the pictures with him are great, and I’m glad people like him so much💚 . I definitely would love to go back to Death Valley. It’s so beautiful and the geologic history is just awesome. . Celebrating Life in Death (Valley) A short time ago, to celebrate my birth month, I paid a visit to my newest favorite National Park. Aside from the unexpected palette of colors , Lake Manly made an appearance. Last seen in 2005, it forms at Badwater Basin (282 feet below sea level) only after exceptionally heavy rains. See photos 5-8. Hurricane Hilary dumped enough rain in August to help create this temporary lake. Having a mix of centuries old salt crystals and fresh rainwater in a valley that was created for and by a lake millenia ago, you get some really cool formations happening. While up at Dante’s view/Coffin peak, I was able to view these cool patterns from a high up vantage point and it made me think of a petri dish. The first photo I deliberately took the way I did as it reminded me of the grand prismatic spring in Yellowstone. At first I thought I had suddenly spied some trees at the waters edge and was so surprised when I zoomed in and instead found (sadly likely manmade) breaks in salt and mud that was now languidly flowing into the water. A popular spot in Death Valley National Park is a high prominence known as Dante’s View. It is named for Dante Alighieri, author of Divina Commedia (The Devine Comedy). This seems rather fitting as, while it is beautiful, you can probably find plenty of the circles of Hell in Death Valley, especially in summer. On this evening standing at the edge of the 5600 foot elevation and looking over Badwater Basin which is nearly 300 feet below sea level I wasn’t hot, I was darn near hypothermic as I wasn’t really dressed to be there. My car thermometer said it was just over 40 degrees Fahrenheit but that does no justice to the insane winds that are created in such a radical elevation change. I had no way to measure but I guarantee some of the gusts were over 30mph and felt like they blew right through the thin hiking pants I was wearing – just an hour earlier I was sweating in those pants and only a tee shirt on the valley floor. SWIPE FOR PANORMA I was very lucky to have been there right after a very windy storm that blew Lake Manly back to the main basin after it had drifted over to the right a couple of days earlier, when I went to photograph Badwater for sunrise. I always forget just how vast the Death Valley basin itself is, and I’m always awestruck imagining how the first humans to see this land must have felt!
