Dankzij de bijdrage van velen van jullie is het gelukt om de crowdfunding voor mijn docu 'Waarom stopt ie niet gewoon?' te doen slagen. Meer dan 75% is gehaald! Wat geweldig om te merken dat zoveel mensen geloven in waar ik mee bezig ben. Heel veel dank! En dankzij een fantastische bijdrage van de gemeente Den Haag kon het bedrag worden aangevuld tot 102%. Superfijn dat de gemeente zijn creatieve makers op deze wijze stimuleert. Ik zal jullie niet teleurstellen. En hoe nu verder? Vanmiddag ga ik met Sanne afspraken maken over het opnemen van de laatste scenes. En na die opnames volgt het montageproces, inspreken van voice-overs, vormgeving, audionabewerking etc. Ik hoop dat allemaal in september af te ronden zodat de docu in oktober klaar is voor vertoning. Rond die tijd kunnen jullie ook meer informatie over de tegenprestaties verwachten! 💰 Filmmaking is a very expensive art! We wanted to breakdown the costs to show our supporters how their pennies will be used in the project. 🫧 Crew lunch! 🍔 shoot days are on average 10-11 hrs long, and there will be 3-6 people on set across 6+ days of shooting - that’s a lot of sustenance to keep the crew fed, happy, energised and rolling until wrap! 🫧 Petrol, parking and Ubers 🚗 although our launderettes are all based in London, call times will usually start at 5am and end at 6pm, so sometimes the tube doesn’t run! We’ll be shooting in locations where we need private parking and of course will need to repay the mileage to our two vehicle drivers Nick and Jack (our Soundie and DOP!) 🫧 Insurance 🛟 our kit was donated by the fabulous team at @vmi.tv but we still need to insure £££ thousands of pounds £££ worth of equipment before we can even get on set! 🫧 Hard drives 💿 if only a good old floppy disk did the trick! We need super fast, reliable SSD storage to dump our footage on to, and because we’re shoootng in 4k and using very high end cameras, we need a LOT of data storage! And back ups! Our hard drives cost around £325 each. 🫧 Contingency ⚠️ what if something goes wrong? We get a parking ticket for overrunning on set, we have to shoot an extra day because our contributors pulled out, or we accidentally cause damage to a property on location? Contingency always needs to be built into budgets so you can factor in any unplanned costs. What about everything else? 👀🎬 Well, we need to be realistic with our fundraising goal, so we’re only using the Crowdfunder to pay for the expenses of the production. Music licenses, archive footage, distribution and festival submissions are not included. 🫶🏼 All our crew are also working FOR FREE because we don’t have any funding for the film - THANK YOU CREW! Meet the Assistant Producer: Jemaima Mendoza Jemaima is a London based Assistant Producer working in Film & TV. Coming from an underrepresented background herself, her personal projects centre around making space for and elevating the voices of these communities. Working on ‘Washing Away’ has introduced Jemaima to a whole new community, one that has emerged through the rumbles of washing machines and tumble dryers. This community is a beautiful amalgamation of people who already have one thing in common, laundry. Jemaima has a strong belief in the power of storytelling to inspire empathy among audiences and in turn, effect positive change. She hopes this short documentary will do just that!

Helemaal top! Peter Streefkerk doneerde een prachtig bedrag aan mijn crowdfunding en dat verdient om in het zonnetje gezet te worden. Peter, inkoopadviseur en goede vriend, ziet namelijk kansen voor Social Return. Wat dat is? Bij verschillende opdrachtgevers maakte ik afgelopen jaren kennis met het begrip Social Return. Doe je zaken met de overheid, dan verlangt die daar een bijdrage aan de samenleving voor terug. Dat kan met Social Return. Je laat als leverancier zien dat je mensen met een afstand tot de arbeidsmarkt betrekt bij je opdracht. Onder die doelgroep zit veel potentieel en er zijn nog veel vacatures te vervullen. Soms heeft dat net wat meer aandacht en inspanning nodig van de werkgever. Peter legt de link met mijn documentaire. Immers: Als bedrijven (ex)verslaafden minder veroordelen, de talenten en mogelijkheden van mensen zien en kansen geven, dan kunnen er mooie dingen tot stand komen. Over the past few month’s we have talked about our involvement and partnership with the @lnadj_charity . We have been hard at work completing interviews for a documentary, which will tell the story of the 2018 Mt. Kilimanjaro climb to raise funds to build a new unit at @share_tanzania, #featherstalechildrensvillage, with the additional challenge of breaking the world record for the world’s highest DJ set. Musicians, DJ’s, producers and corporate business owners have generously given up their time to share their experience of this epic and life-changing adventure. Eno, a documentary by @gary_hustwit hustwit is a quite extraordinary endeavour. Faced with the frustrating restrictions of making a traditional documentary about a creative figure, the team developed a groundbreaking generative system, that dynamically creates a new film every time you see it. In collaboration with digital artist @brendandawes the playback system was embedded in a special table top device, built in collaboration with @teenageengineering and the only main disappointment of this UK premiere last night was being unable to actually see it up close! Drawing from Eno’s archive, with materials that even he himself admitted in the chat afterwards he hadn’t seen since he first captured them, the film celebrates Eno as a figure open to chance and discovery. It was very entertaining to watch as Eno abandoned his pouting and eyeshadow and moved into collaborations with David Bowie amongst many others. A contemporary interview with Eno sitting in his countryside house is interspersed with archival footage (apparently over 500 hours of it from Eno’s personal archive) with Robert Fripp, Laraaji, David Byrne, Roxy Music and much more. The story about peeing in a Marcel Duchamp urinal at New York’s Museum of Modern Art brought much laughter in the audience too. A double header post today. Firstly, time to celebrate the work of American filmmaker and photographer @gary_hustwit (b.1965) He made his directional debut with the documentary film Helvetica (2001), which explored the role of typography and graphic design in our culture, and over the years has produced over 20 documentaries and film projects, including the award-winning I Am Trying To Break Your Heart about the band Wilco. Helvetica was one of those unusual films that ensured that after seeing it, you kept scanning the world around you for that very same typeface, which inevitably would appear in brochures, magazines, shop signs, street signs, etc. His association with film and music has been extensive, since he worked with the seminal punk label SST Records in the 1980s, and then ran the independent book publishing house Incommunicado Press during the 1990s, and started the DVD label Plexifilm in 2001. Plexifilm was fantastic, in that it supported and distributed work from the likes of Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Andy Warhol and David Byrne. Now, Gary is back with a new documentary about the legend that is British musician and artist @brianeno and it was a joy to meet him last night and exchange a few playful words before the UK premiere of this amazing film. Zoals jullie vast hebben meegekregen, ben ik bezig met een crowdfunding voor mijn documentaire over verslaving. Maar de hele tijd knaagt er iets aan me. Schuldgevoel. Schuld omdat ik de ellende van oorlogen dagelijks via de media en socials aan me voorbij zie trekken. Mensen waarvan huizen platgebombardeerd zijn, de dood, hongersnood, ontvoeringen. Ik zie radeloze mensen die er niet uit kunnen en die via gofund.me tienduizenden euro’s bij elkaar schrapen om zich een weg uit die situaties te kopen. En ik schaam me. Schaam me dat we allemaal toekijken. En ik schaam me dat ik mensen vraag om mij geld te geven. Ik overwoog zelfs om de crowdfunding stil te leggen. Maar tegelijk realiseer ik me dat er nog zoveel meer oorlogen, conflicten, natuurrampen, droogte, honger is in de wereld, waar we niet eens meer naar kijken. Dit alles deelde ik met die vriendin. En zij luisterde en leefde met me mee en erkende en herkende de frustratie dat het onmogelijk is om iedereen te helpen. En ze gaf me een belangrijk inzicht. ‘Je zult moeten leven met het schuldgevoel…’ Al wat ik kan, is proberen dat te doen waar ik misschien een beetje invloed op heb. ‘Launderettes are a community of their own. Their own little cosmos.’ - Maria, customer at Fonthill Road Launderette. Maria has been customer at Fonthill Road since 2006. When Dimitri’s was a kid and his mother would be working long hours, she would take him on day trips all around London. The Tate, Chinese New Year in Soho (ending up in McDonalds). Then when the days were long in the launderette, she’d pop in with some cream cakes and made sure everyone took a break. ‘If launderettes were to disappear from our streets, it’s going to be a very sad, rainy day. And the sun won’t shine for quite a long time because they are very, very, very important to every community.’

Three weeks ago we visited the Boundary Estate, a few steps from Shoreditch high street. The estate is thought to be first ever social housing, which also ran the first ever communal washing facilities in the UK. However, the day we had planned wasn’t one for researching the history of London launderettes, it was to document the locals attempting to save the launderette from closing down. At the end of February the council changed the locks, pulled down the shutters and stopped people from being able to do their weekly washing. The launderette as it is today, had been running since 1992, when it was set up by volunteers as a way to combat mould and damp issues in the flats in the local area. We spoke to mothers who were running out of clean clothes to dress their children in, cafe owners who were now having to get taxis to alternative launderettes at the end of their shifts to wash their tea towels, and volunteers who run the not-for-profit service who were in shock about the sudden closure. Thank you to Jonathan, Jean and Suzanna who made the day possible for us and for everyone that welcomed us into their homes to talk.

Meet Dimitri. Owner of the Fonthill Road laundrette in Finsbury Park, N4. Sophie first met Dimitri a year ago and immediately knew his story would be crucial in this documentary. He’s Londons youngest laundrette owner - but not by choice. In the pandemic, he lost his Mother to Covid. Having grown up in her launderette from the age of 6, when they moved from Bulgaria to London, keeping its doors open was a means to survival for him. With no other family income, and needing to look after his Grandmother, he learned how to iron via YouTube (whilst writing his final year dissertation at the other end of the ironing board) and began delivering flyers to local cafes, shops and sports clubs to drum up business and keep the laundrette up and running. Dimitri’s story is one of strength and resilience and we can’t wait to show you his journey.

Having spent many childhood hours staring in to the drum of a tumble dryer waiting for her Mum to finish a cycle or two on a Sunday morning, making a film about laundrettes and the connections made inside them felt like a natural story to tell. “Inside these cultural melting pots with minimal external distraction, there's something about the mundane, repetitive process of doing your laundry that almost forces people in to chatting to each other. If you think about it, doing your laundry is quite a personal thing, and you're doing it right in front of a room full of people you've never met before. Then you have to sit and wait for it all to be over whilst watching someone else's knickers twirl about in a sea of suds opposite you. It's the perfect social situation where classes clash and conversation flows (at least sometimes). We're living in a world where all of our communities have ended up online and we barely look up from our phones, so I want to make this film to remind people to say hello, and to document an important community space on our high streets, before it disappears forever."
