📅Today is the feast day of Saint Mark. In Christian tradition Saint Mark was the first to write a Gospel account of Jesus' life and death. The Saint is often portrayed with, or as, a winged lion. Renowned Lancaster architects Sharpe, Paley and Austin were responsible for work on a number of churches dedicated to the Saint. St Mark's Church, Dolphinholme was built by the company between 1897 and 1898 at the cost of £3300. Inspired in style by the Gothic Revival, the building is now listed as 'Grade II' due to the building's 'historic, archaeological, architectural or artistic interest'. Whilst writing the section for the Lancaster district, in his 'Buildings Of England' books, architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner was particularly impressed with the church, claiming that "one would have to search far and search long in England to find village churches to vie with" the building. Grace Hamilton (1845-1923) was painted by her daughter Marjorie (probably) in about 1910 or 1911. She was the wife of the Rev. Benjamin Hamilton, who sadly spent the last six years of his life in Portsmouth Mental Hospital. She was born Grace Derham and was from that Lancashire Mill owning family who were based in Dolphinholme. She met Benjamin because he was a friend of her brothers who were studying at Cork University in Ireland. Everyone who comes to my clay classes make whatever they like. We are all different and like different things. I have over 25 years of making experience so can guide any project. This is a small selection of work made by people who come to my classes. Two pieces have been thrown on the wheel and then decorated in different way. I have 20+ stoneware glazes which are brushed on as in the black dish. I also have dipping glazes and the cute bowl has been dipped in 3 of these glazes. The two soap dishes were made by a lady who makes soap and are made from slabs of clay. I have a slab roller, extractor and 3 wheels. His wife was Grace Derham when they married in 1871. The Derhams were from Lancashire and Grace's grandfather and great uncle had established a mill in the village of Dolphinholme.
