John Wick Chapter 4 Directed by Chad Stahelski ☆☆☆ It's actually been a week since I watched this (a little too much) action packed Keanu Reeves flick, and the only thing I remember is walking out sayin a definitive 'huh'. I wasn't part of the internet bandwagon that worshipped this franchise, but like everyone, I did come for its insane action sequences. On that font atleast, it delivered. First off the positives. Fantastic score. It gelled so well with pretty much all the fight scenes that, along with an equally fantastic cinematography, made it look a cool video game sequence on autopilot. Then ofcourse there's Donny Yen's Caine. He was a stand out because of his characterization rather than the cool stunts he pulled. Complete opposite to Mister Wick, who felt trapped in a bunch of side quests with cheap objectives. Lastly, the staple of this franchise, gun fu. Having people fight and shoot at close quarters was thrilling to watch. Throwing in unrealistic bulletproof vests to make it more realistic made it even more thrilling. And lastly, the world building. It doesn't make much sense on closer inspection, but it also doesn't get any less interesting. Mr Nobody and Dog were interesting too. Now the negatives. Hiroyuki Sanada and Rika Sawayama were typcasted and wasted. Lawrence Fishburne was wasted. Ian Mcshane and Lance Reddick(RIP) brought nothing new to the table, aside from the latter dying. Same goes for Reeves' Wick, but that worked in his favor. The plot was a mediocre. The resolution was cheap. And when John Wick breathed his last, I barely felt anything. The cost of all of this were cool action sequences, which while cool, was excessive to the point I just sat there waiting for the next one to begin, barely giving a shit for what happened in-between. The John Wick series will stay the superior action franchise despite such short comings, no question about it. However, I can't help but wonder what it could have been had the team behind this takes note from Raid 2 (which premiered the same year as the first John Wick flick). Firstly R.I.P. LANCE REDDICK @thereallancereddick ...😔 There was a little tribute at the end but all the way through the film he was in my mind thinking about how he could have carried on in the franchise etc. Especially if they were working on the continental tv show...but i hear he may still appear in The Ballerina which i believe is now in post production! 💚 Overall though the movie was fantastic #chadstahelski went all in with this 4th installment and I feel he's always reminiscing about his time working on the Matrix trilogy as Keanu's stunt man with the inclusion of Laurence Fishburne with some very Morpheus-esque lines in this at the very start, Bill Skarsgård as a Frenchman which was reminiscent of the #merovingian and then also #johnwick waiting for a train in an abandoned subway station which was very much like the train man in Matrix Revolutions! 😎 Having both the master that is #donnyyen AND #hiroyukisanada together in one movie was enough for me from the outset but there were so many great actors/actresses in there you really couldn't ask for anything more from this film! Alright. I have had a few days to process this film so now I am ready to review it. My thoughts: I think John Wick: Chapter 4 is the best film in the franchise and gives a perfect end to this series. The Action was amazing as always and keeps evolving. Keanu Reeves gives it his all in this film though he is still a man of few words, and a man of many MANY bullets. The three new supporting characters that were added were great! Bill Skarsgård was an amazing villain,Donnie Yen had amazing banter with Reeves in their scenes together, and Mr.Nobody was just great with his Damn Dog! This film did make some characters feel invincible at times but that’s my only complaint. It’s a banger. Lots and lots of creatively inspired action set pieces without any Slow Mo or Rapid Cuts. John Wick met his deadliest adversary in the form of Caine who’s blind. Bill (Marques) in the role of villain showcased one of the best acting set pieces in the movie and the manner by which leas character explores his universe makes you demand more stories in the same universe. Scott Adkins killa seems refreshing while fighting with Mr. Wick. The ending of this movie is as satisfying as the end of Iron Man which is emotional and makes you pay more respect to the character. John Wick: Chapter 4 знаете, бывает самого того не ожидая добротно, с душой сделанное творение попадает в ностальгическую волну и становится культурным феноменом. Так пожалуй случилось с первым Джоном Уиком - качественным боевиком с простым сюжетом, но мастерски поставленными боевыми сценами, с реалистичным подходом к дракам и перестрелкам и отличными всеми любимыми актерами. И в каждом последующем фильме добавлялась, что-то новое и очень эффектное будь-то рабочие малинуа, красивые атрибуты и символика всего подпольного мира, отсылки к классическим кинолентам (в последнем сходу вспоминается Затоичи и Jaws - злодей из Бонда), и стиль - эффектный красивый парадно-костюмированный боевик. L’avis ciné du Père Jean : John Wick Chapitre 4 De Chad Stahelski VERDICT : LE GUN FU AU SOMMET La saga John Wick a amené avec elle un vent rafraîchissant dans le cinéma d’action. Arrivée tel un ovni avec le premier opus, cette production hollywoodienne survitaminée mettant enfin les cascadeurs à l’honneur, a su s’imposer telle une évidence dans le paysage du cinéma d’action du style Gun Fu. Un univers déjà bien representé par le cinéma Hong-Kongais. Je pense aux films de John Woo, Tsui Hark, ou encore Yuen Woo-Ping. John Wick 4 confirme et enfonce le clou car oui, ce film est complètement DINGUE. Points positifs : La mise en scène et les chorégraphies de l’action sont d’un niveau stellaire. Le film est au firmament et pousse tous les curseurs à leurs maximums La réalisation est ultra maitrisée. La scène de combat à Paris filmée en plan séquence et en Top Shot, qui rappelle directement le jeu vidéo « Hong Kong Massacre » est barjo. Une scène mémorable. Chad Stahelski filme en temps réel, il n’y a pas de ralenti, ce qui n’est pas pour me déplaire. Surtout que la lisibilité des scènes d’action est ultra propre. On note également tout son amour pour les westerns, de John Ford à Sergio Leone, à travers une multitude de mises en scène La photographie est démentielle. Tout est prétexte à transformer l’image en œuvre d’art. Enfin, Donnie Yen est incroyable. Je vous laisse la surprise de le découvrir. Points négatifs : Le nouvel antagoniste joué par Bill Skarsgard est un peu trop lisse. Un des bad Guy les moins intéressants de la franchise. Quelques petites longueurs par ci par là. Le film dure quand même 2h50. Le nouveau personnage de Nobody avec son chien est anecdotique. Inintéressant de mon point de vue. Conclusion : John Wick 4 est une véritable BOMBE ATOMIQUE. Définitivement, la licence se hisse au rang des plus grands films d’actions et laissera derrière elle une marque indélébile dans l’histoire du Gun Fu.
