Happy Friday, Ghoulies!! 🎉🙌🏻🍻 Y’all know I like my depraved serial killer stories, especially when the murders are linked to the occult. Well, Granite Harbor by Peter Nichols fits that mold! Thank you sooo much @celadonbooks for the @netgalley ARC of Granite Harbor! 🥰🥰 This review is entirely my own words. ⭐️⭐️⭐️.75 Set in a small coastal town in the State of Maine, we stumble across an occult murder that turns out to be the work of a serial killer. Now this story had solid police procedural, well fleshed out characters and those amazing small town vibes! We alternate between multiple POVs and timelines, which was a little bit murky at times, but served a purpose. The characters are colorful and written in a way that you do feel for them in their situations. I enjoyed the history of occult factors that play into the murders, and absolutely loved the historical village as I grew up visiting a similar settlement where my Aunt worked for many years. Overall this was a very solid serial killer police procedural story! I recommend to all who enjoy these types of books, even though I found the pacing to be a tad slow. However, I look forward to reading more from this author! I have been craving a "simple" type of thriller lately - one where it's just thrilling for entertainment value, with no ulterior motive or preaching (and honestly, no drugs). Emily Shiner answered my desires with The Drowned Girls, book one in the Detective Freya Sinclair series! This story jumps right into the action with a disturbing prologue and doesn't let up for a minute! Detective Freya Sinclair is a strong female character, trying to overcome ghosts of her past as she relocates back to the town and police department she left a few years ago; her own secrets slowly unravel along side the mysterious drownings of the young girls, and it was addicting! I was hooked early on, and at 22% in, I simply had to know more about Freya's history, and I needed to know who was behind the killings! Audiobook narrator Amelia Sciandra brought the book to life! The voice acting was superb, and each characters voice was very distinct! I found myself remembering which character was speaking more so on the voices used with narration than what my Kindle page told me! I'll be starting One Liar Left, book two in the series, later this week, and I just can't wait to see what happens next in Fawn Lake! What's something you're looking forward to this week? ✨Outback Patricia Wolf I had zero expectations for this one. It was another one of my ‘spend £x to get free delivery’ from Amazon. Don’t shoot me. And yes, I’m frugal and won’t pay for Prime 😆 Anyway, judgement set aside, I liked this. It’s not going to win any awards but for me it was a great palette cleanser. I think this is the first in a new crime series set in Australia, which is a lovely marker of difference from other cop series set in Bradford, Sweden, Edinburgh. DS Walker is on leave from his undercover role in Sydney. He’s back on the outback to care for his dying grandma. News comes in that two German backpackers have gone missing. One of the victim’s sister’s arrives in Caloodie. She too is a detective. Throw in a drug cartel and corrupt local cops and you’ve got an unabashed page turner. I’d say this is perfect for reading between heavy going books or on your holidays. A solid 4⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 from me.
