Parents/carers, I see you. I see you wanting the best for your child and trying to help them overcome their challenges. You don't need to do it alone! I can help ☺️ What if I told you I can teach you how to do some simple and gentle developmental movements at home, which will calm and better organise your child's brain and nervous system? That's exactly what Neurodevelopmental Therapy is! Often called Primitive Reflex Integration as well, this therapy is non-invasive, drug-free and easy to do. The work you do at home is the biggest success so if you are committed to changing your child's life, I can give you the tools. This therapy can address many of the root causes behind your child's challenges. It's all about the brain and rightly so because the brain controls everything. Were you aware ADHD and Dyspraxia had so much of an overlap in their traits?🧠💡 After my post over the weekend about the sad closure of the Dyspraxia Foundation, I received many messages, and it has been lovely to connect with fellow Dyspraxics and professionals in the community. But, among these, there have also been a number of questions, many of which being about Dyspraxia and ADHD, how much overlap there is and how to tell the difference! I'm by no means a healthcare professional, and this is not intended for diagnosis purposes but to illustrate my personal experiences, understanding, and research. Firstly some of the core overlapping traits can be: 🌻 Problems with concentration and focus 🌻 Balance difficulties 🌻 Restlessness and Fidgeting 🌻 Difficulty with organisational skills 🌻 Sensory processing difficulties 🌻 Impulsivity 🌻 Difficulty with fine motor skills 🌻 Low self-esteem 🌻 Emotional dysregulation Now, if you are confused (as I was when I was first diagnosed) about how there could possibly be so much overlap, then it is helpful to reflect on executive functioning. Executive functioning is impacted by both Dyspraxia and ADHD and can include: 🚨 Impulsivity 🚨 Working Memory 🚨 Emotional Regulation 🚨 Concentration 🚨 Task Initiation 🚨 Planning and Organisation 🚨 Time Management 🚨 Motivation This helps to explain some of the large overlap. In addition to this Dyspraxia and ADHD are often co-occurring conditions: 🧠 Between 6% and 10% of the general population are dyspraxic 🧠 Around 5% of the general population have ADHD 🧠 Around 50% of dyspraxic people also have ADHD 🧠 Around 90% of people with ADHD are also dyspraxic Dyspraxia is still a very misunderstood condition that needs more awareness. I'd love to continue to connect with more people working in the space, and my inbox is always open to questions 🩷 #DyspraxiaAwareness #DyspraxiaCommunity #DyspraxicAdult #SpeechAndLanguage #DyspraxiaSupport #DyspraxiaAdvocate #DevelopmentalCoordinationDisorder #DCD #Dyspraxia #ADHD #ADHDAwareness

Dyspraxia is more than just 'being clumsy' 💡 what questions do you have about dyspraxia? After the very sad announcement yesterday that the @dyspraxiafoundation will be closing after almost 40 years of service, I want to take the time to raise awareness for dyspraxia, and to make more space in my content to talk about life as a dyspraxic adult. Dyspraxia is widely misunderstood, and people are only aware of the impact that it has on individuals coordination and motor skills. What is less talked about is the impact on: 💡 Speech and Language 💡 Organisation Skills 💡 Perception 💡 Sequencing 💡 Auditory and Visual Processing 💡 Memory 💡 Emotional and Behavioural Skills I'm going to be making more content about my life as a dyspraxic adult, and I'd love to collaborate with other dyspraxic content creators and community members. If you know a great dyspraxic creator I should collaborate with please tag them in the comments! Or if you are a dyspraxic content creator or community member who's love to collaborate please reach out to me 🩷 In the meantime I'd highly recommend following @theblackdyspraxic who has some amazing content already created about being dyspraxic! Big love to all of our community who is impacted by this recent anouncement 🩷 we are all in this together, and I'm here for anyone who'd like to talk or who might not be sure what other support is on offer. #DyspraxiaAwareness #DyspraxiaCommunity #DyspraxicAdult #SpeechAndLanguage #DyspraxiaSupport #DyspraxiaAdvocate #DevelopmentalCoordinationDisorder #DCD #Dyspraxia

👯 Send it to Alex was established by neurodivergent sisters Alex and Lillie Jamieson in 2019. Alex and Lillie both received late diagnoses of neurodivergent conditions, including autism, ADHD and dyslexia. They began to connect the dots between their experiences as neurodivergent people and the barriers they came up against in their working lives. So they set out to redefine what work needed to look like for them. This seeded a broader vision: to redefine work for everyone with neurodivergent conditions who face work-related challenges to their success and wellbeing. Lillie and Alex’s vision brought Send it to Alex to life. To date, their commitment to changing the world of work for the better has helped over 150 neurodivergent people access support. They have funded over a thousand hours of training to Support Workers to help raise the standard of support. And they’ve provided over 14,000 hours of virtual support to neurodivergent entrepreneurs and employees. — 📨New here? The website appears to be related to the "Dyspraxia Foundation - Yorkshire (South)" with text that reads "Welcome to Dyspraxia Foundation" and additional information below indicating its mission, "Raising awareness and supporting people with Dyspraxia/DCD." There is also contact information for a helpline service available from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, along with a phone number. In the background, there are a few gray puzzle pieces, one of which is slightly detached from the others, symbolizing perhaps the challenges faced by those with Dyspraxia/DCD. 👋 Let’s shed some light on an amazing condition called Dyspraxia. 🌈✨ Whether you’re a parent, teacher or just curious, this post will give you valuable insights into this lesser-known condition affecting coordination and movement skills in children. #DyspraxiaAwareness 🧠 What is Dyspraxia? Dyspraxia, also known as Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), is a neurological condition that affects a person’s ability to plan and coordinate movements. It doesn’t mean they are less intelligent; they just have a unique way of navigating the world! 🌍🚀 🏫 In the Classroom: Imagine a student struggling to write neatly, tie shoelaces, or remember instructions. That could be a child with Dyspraxia. Teachers, you play a vital role in making learning inclusive for all. Implement multi-sensory teaching methods, provide visual aids, and break tasks into manageable steps. Your support can make a world of difference! 👩‍🏫🌈 👥 Supporting Students: Parents, it’s essential to provide a nurturing environment that acknowledges your child’s challenges and strengths. Encourage physical activities such as swimming or martial arts that boost coordination. Celebrate every small achievement and let them know they’re incredible just the way they are! 🙌💪 Seeking Professional Help: If you suspect your child may have Dyspraxia, consulting a healthcare professional or an educational specialist is a crucial step. They can provide valuable advice, recommend interventions, and help your child thrive in their educational journey. 💼🔍 🌟 Embracing Differences: Let’s celebrate diversity and create an inclusive society that embraces each person’s unique abilities! Remember, a condition like Dyspraxia doesn’t define a person but adds to their remarkable individuality. Together, we can break barriers and foster a more understanding world! ❤️🌍 #DyspraxiaSupport #InclusiveEducation #SpecialEducation #EveryChildMatters #AbilityNotDisability #DifferentNotLess #LearningDifferences #EmpathyMatters #EmbraceDifferences Remember to like ❤️ and share this post to spread awareness about Dyspraxia and support those affected by it! 🤝💙

Sometimes self care is doing the thing that feels harder, instant gratification isn’t always the best way to be kind to yourself. I know I have struggled throughout my life between the balance of looking after the future me and the present me, eating on feelings. Peeling back each layer and nurturing each part of me has naturally guided me towards nurturing myself in ways that would feel forced and unmanageable some time ago because numbing with food is much more acceptable then with drugs or alcohol. Now I have harnessed my inner child and I know I can take care of her, the chains of external comfort feel less tight as I have found comfort within 💕 #selfcare #counselling #therapyuk #therapylancashire

Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), also known as dyspraxia, is a neurodevelopmental condition affecting motor coordination and planning. Individuals with DCD may struggle with basic motor tasks, such as tying shoelaces or catching a ball, impacting daily activities. This disorder is not related to intellectual impairment, making it particularly challenging as cognitive abilities may outpace motor skills. Diagnosis involves observing persistent motor difficulties that significantly interfere with daily functioning. Early intervention, including occupational therapy, can help individuals with DCD improve coordination and lead more fulfilling lives by developing strategies to overcome motor challenges. #DevelopmentalCoordinationDisorder #DCD #DyspraxiaAwareness #MotorCoordination #NeurodevelopmentalCondition #OccupationalTherapy #MotorSkillsChallenge #CognitiveDevelopment #EarlyIntervention #DailyFunctioning #MotorPlanning #Neurodiversity #ChildDevelopment #MotorDifficulties #DyspraxiaSupport #CoordinationChallenges #FunctionalSkills #CopingStrategies #NeurologicalDisorder #EnhancingLifeSkills (Developmental Coordination Disorder DCD, Dyspraxia, Motor Coordination, Neurodevelopmental Condition, Occupational Therapy, Cognitive Development, Motor Skills, Early Intervention, Neurodiversity)

Our #FPOW this week is The Dyspraxia Foundation, who encourage others to set up their own local sub-groups to support other parents and all those affected by #Dyspraxia in their own local area. The Foundation seeks every opportunity to increase understanding of #Dyspraxia, particularly among professionals in health and education, and encourages its local groups to do the same. It continues to encourage the smaller local groups to thrive and develop their own ideas and to distribute information and fundraise for themselves. They are committed to making the teaching and medical professions more aware of Dyspraxia/DCD; and to spread understanding of how those who have the condition can be helped. For help and advice they have a designated Helpline. They also support many friendly local groups who have all gained a lot from knowing each other, and who hold regular meetings/coffee mornings and fundraising events. 🧠Autism is known as a “spectrum" because it encompasses a wide range of traits.  🔵Autistic people are prone to experiencing co-occurring conditions, such as: 🔵Sensory Processing Disorders (SPD): Many autistic people may be over-responsive or under-responsive to sensory inputs like light, noise or touch.  This can manifest as either an aversion to sensory stimuli or seeking out intense sensory experiences. 🔵Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): It is not uncommon to be diagnosed with both. 🔵Epilepsy: There is a higher rate of epilepsy among autistic people compared to the general population.  🔵Gastrointestinal Issues: Many individuals with autism may experience gastrointestinal (GI) issues, such as irritable bowel syndrome. The reasons for this link are not fully understood yet. 🔵Anxiety: Anxiety is considerably more common in autistic people. This can include generalised anxiety disorder, social anxiety, phobias or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). 🔵Sleep Difficulties: Sleep problems, including difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep or erratic sleep patterns, are frequently reported in autistic people.  🔵Food-related Concerns: Selective eating habits, limited food preferences and eating disorders like avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) can be more prevalent. 🔵Dyspraxia: Motor issues, including poor muscle tone, dyspraxia, and coordination problems, are often present in individuals with autism. We believe that everyone deserves the right support and understanding. That's why we've partnered with RTN, who offer diagnoses for under £1000 with 0% interest payment plans. 💙 🔗Click the link in bio to find out more. . . . . . . . #dyspraxiaireland #dyspraxiaawareness #dyspraxiaproblems #verbaldyspraxia #dyspraxiapiechallenge #dyspraxia17 #dyspraxiasupport #dyspraxia #hiddendisability #invisibledisability #selfregulation #adhdbrain #adhdawareness #adhd #adhdparenting #adhdstruggles #adhdhelp #arfid #eatingdisorder #eatingdisorders #anxietyisreal #anxietydisorders #anxietyfighter #overcominganxiety #anxiety #copingskills #anxietyawareness #anxietyattack #anxietyproblems

So, lately, I've been journaling. It's a great tool to utilize in dealing with letting out my frustrations and thoughts. Not only that, I use it to monitor and observe certain patterns and behaviors when it comes to living with #adhd #dyspraxia and #bipolardisordertype2. It let's me keep track of when my conditions flare-up and allows me to see if I'm doing certain things that make things better or worse for me. I can make the necessary changes to improve my overall health and minimize the severity of my symptoms. Have you ever thought about journaling?? It helps me out a great deal. #neurodiverse #neurodivergent #neurodiversity #neurologicaldisorderawareness #neurologicaldisorder #neurologicalcondition #journaling #journalingcommunity #mentalhealthadvocate #mentalhealthstruggles #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthawareness #dyspraxia #adhd #bipolar #adhdawareness #dyspraxiaawareness #bipolarawareness #dyspraxics #dyspraxiasupport #adhdsupport #self-care #self-love #inspiration #Uplifting #anxietyanddepression #anxiety #depression

Dyspraxia Awareness Week KATE’s STORY Today marks our last post to support Dyspraxia Awareness Week and we’re sharing the second part of Kate’s story (see yesterday’s post for part one) Kate has loads of useful advice and strategies she has developed to help with things day to day, including 🩵 Paying careful attention to surroundings 🩵 “Picking my feet up more than I need to” 🩵 Always having sterile dressings, antiseptic etc in the bathroom cupboard 🩵 “Visualisation helps with left and right - mentally loving myself in a certain position and working out which hand is on which side” 🩵 A digital watch 🩵 “I don’t drive due to lack of spatial awareness and fine motor skills, plus anxiety” 🩵 “I always have the means to take text notes so I very rarely need to write anything by hand” 🩵 “When I’m standing for periods of time I try to find something to lean on to help with loss of balance” And back in her school days Kate would have found the following helpful 🩵 Accommodation for difficulties with handwriting 🩵 Not being placed in situations that were humiliating or isolating - like picking teams in PE, or taking taking the cycling proficiency because I hadn’t learnt to ride a bike 🩵 “I’d have mostly appreciated understanding from teachers and other adults that this wasn’t something I failed at because I couldn’t be bothered to learn - that it was something innate” Thanks so much Kate - we’ve loved sharing your story 🩵 #DyspraxiaWeek #DyspraxiaWeek23 #DyspraxiaAwarenessWeek #DyspraxiaAwarenessWeek23 #Dyspraxia #DyspraxiaFoundation #DyspraxiaSupport #DyspraxiaDCD #LivingWithDyspraxia #DyspraxiaAwareness #ActuallyEducation #ActuallyEducationCIC
