At first glance, can you tell whether this snake is venomous? Its distinctive eye mask (black stripe that looks like a Zorro mask) and the flat shelf over its eye are good signs that this is a venomous snake. You don’t want to get too close, but their pupils are vertical (catlike), another sign of a venomous snake. Finally, although most snakes don’t have a rattle, in this case, there was a rattle at the end of the tail, a definitive indicator that this is a venomous eastern diamondback rattlesnake I spotted on a trail in the Florida Everglades. Floridians respect and protect our native snakes unlike non-native, invasive Burmese Pythons that are threatening our ecosystem. Fun fact: Did you know that their scales and rattles are composed of keratin, the same material that makes up our hair and fingernails? #reptilelover #reptiles #reptilesofinstagram #ig #easterndiamondback #venomous #easterndiamondbackrattlesnake #rattlesnake #rattlesnakes #snakelover #herpingtheglobe #floridalife #naturelovers #herping #swamp #everglades #herpingflorida #swamplife #wildlife #snakelovers #biology #snakes #venom #snakesofinstagram #snakeloversofinstagram #snake #explorepage #explore #hiking #biologia @worldshares

Eastern diamondbacks are endemic to the Southeastern United States, and can be found throughout Florida, North Carolina, and Georgia. They are known for their iconic rattle and their venomous bite, which can be fatal to humans. Although they are feared as deadly and aggressive, diamondbacks are actually highly averse to human contact and only attack in defense. If bitten, you should seek immediate medical care from a physician or hospital experienced in treating snakebites. #shehowlswithwolvesphotography #easterndiamondbackrattlesnake #rattlesnake #reptilephotography #wildlifephotography #nashvillezoo #nashvilletn

Eastern diamondback and timber rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus and C. horridus, respectively) at Hovatter's Wildlife Zoo (@hovatterswildlife) in Kingwood, West Virginia. The eastern diamondback rattlesnake is the heaviest venomous snake in North America, and a contender for being the heaviest in the world. Adults average five to six feet (~1.52 to ~1.83 meters) in body length and 12 to 15 pounds (~5.45 to 6.81 kilograms) in body weight, but Wood (1982) mentions a maximum weight of 34 pounds (~15.44 kilograms) and three specimens in the range of 7 feet 9 inches to 8 feet 9 inches (~2.36 to ~2.67 meters) in length. Timber rattlesnakes are usually 2.5 to 5 feet (76.2 to ~152 centimeters) in body length and weigh 1.1 to 3.3 pounds (~499 to ~1,498 grams) (Fitschen, 2024), but King and Behler (1979) claim a maximum length of 74 1/2 inches (~1.89 meters). Since the zoo gives no description of the rattlesnakes in the enclosure, I contacted herpetologists through email for help. The species were verified by Sara Ruane of the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. I was also curious about how the two species coexist in the wild. Ruane said "although these snakes do occur in some of the same general areas and states, they usually are not found directly with each other/don't use the exact same environment in the wild. The diamondback is more associated with scrubby sandy pine forest, while timbers are usually a bit more likely to be found in broadleaf forested areas, at least on the East Coast (of the United States). This can vary a bit for the timbers, depending on where in the country they occur and what habitat types are available for them. So the snakes are not necessarily competing much with each other. Timbers also don't get quite as big and are not feeding on some of the really large prey items that an eastern diamondback rattlesnake is." A large male eastern diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus) I found on the beach!!! This was an extremely exciting find as I had been searching for a diamondback on the beach for many, many years before I came across this one. This individual was basking with another large diamondback, presumably a female that he was planning to copulate with, but she retreated into a hole upon discovery. This species is known to swim long distances in the ocean between islands, however I’d assume this individual has a permanent residence on this beautiful beachfront property. Unfortunately I had no camera for this discovery so this cellphone shot will have to do. #snake #snakes #animals #wildlife #wild #diamondback #diamondbackrattlesnake #easterndiamondbackrattlesnake #outdoors #adventure #explore #crotalus #crotalusadamanteus #herping #fieldherping #herpetology #reptiles #reptile

A juvenile Eastern Diamondback (Crotalus adamanteus) emerging from its refugia on a cool but sunny spring morning. For those of you asking "where's #2???" on my story last week, this little guy was the second EDB spotted that morning. In magnificently well-managed (and underrated) habitat with a relative lack of human persecution and/or invasive species, it was extremely pleasant to see this species thriving in abundance and the relative lack of effort it took to find several. 2024 started off slow for me in finding snakes. While I was lucky enough to see a few snakes during winter, I was looking really forward to the month of March which is usually fantastic for finding snakes here in Georgia. Since mid March, I have seen 9 species of snakes and over 20 individuals. This was mostly do some serious flipping in the Southern part of the state which produced some fantastic finds. This included flipping a Hognose, Corn Snake, and Racer under one sheet of tin, flipping 5 Eastern King Snakes in one day, a young Eastern Diamondback, and two huge Canebrakes! This herping stretch also produced some fond memories with good friends I was lucky to spend time with. Here is the species break down: 8 Eastern King Snakes (Lampropeltis getula) 3 Southern Black Racers (Coluber constrictor priapus) 2 Timber (Canebrake) Rattlesnakes (Crotalus horridus) 2 Eastern Hognose Snakes (Heterodon platirhinos) 2 Gray Rat Snakes (Pantherophis spiloides) 1 Corn Snake (Pantherophis guttatus) 1 Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus) 1 Eastern Copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix) 1 Common Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis) Hoping that the good herping continues as the weather keeps getting warmer. #snakes #rattlesnake #hognosesnake #timberrattlesnake #easterndiamondbackrattlesnake #cornsnake #kingsnake #ratsnake #reptiles #animals #herping #fieldherping #herpetology #nature #wildlife #outdoors #offthegrid #memories #photography #panasoniclumixfz300 #raynox150

Did you know Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnakes (Crotalus adamanteus) are the largest rattlesnakes in the WORLD?! 🌎 These massive venomous snakes reach lengths of 4-5 feet on average, with large individuals reaching up to and over 7ft on occasion! While this doesn't seem very long in comparison with boas and pythons, in the world of rattlesnakes (where average is closer to 3ft) these are giants! This species is native to the Southeastern United States, and is found in a variety of habitats including but not limited to woodlands, fields, marshes, and coastlines. These snakes are strong swimmers and are actually known to swim from the mainland to neighboring islands, establishing populations there! These snakes are much more mild mannered and less likely to bite than their western cousins, but should still be treated with respect and caution, as their venom is potent and can be life threatening. #easterndiamondback #easterndiamondbackrattlesnake #rattlesnake #venomous #venomoussnake #reptile #snake #herp #herpetology #zoology #mysnakecrate

While the main goal of our research is to learn more about Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnakes for conservation management in the wild, we are branching to include studies with more human-centered implications. A few weeks ago, @herpetellagist from USF, @chemicalkim, @risingtidefl, and interns from the USGS/UF invasive species team joined us to extract venom from a few of our research animals. Ella's phd dissertation is evaluating venom compositions and evolution of snakes in habitats with varying degrees of human influence. This work also will help determine the possibilities for EDB venom to fight breast cancer! All in all, I think (hope) everyone enjoyed seeing this unique process and learning even more reasons of why Rattlesnakes are the BEST!! 🧬🔬🐍🧬🔬🐍🧬🔬🐍🧬🔬🐍🧬🔬🐍🧬🔬🐍🧬🔬🐍 #Herpetology #Research #Science #Wildlife #USF #RookeryBay #EasternDiamondbackRattlesnake #Rattlesnake #Crotalus #Venom #Venomous #Snakes #Viper #Florida #SWFL #SouthFlorida #Naples #Conservation #Nature #Ecosystem #Ecology #Wild #Evolution #Snake #Biology

Today while out herping, my buddy, Kevin, & I found this gorgeous venomous Eastern diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus). This snake must have measured around 45 inches. Finding the snake was a huge success for us as this was our primary goal for the day. After observing it for a while, we went on our way & left it be. This year has been very kind to me within my passion for reptile preservation & education. Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake in the Herpaterium at the Dallas Zoo. The Reptile House is always one of my favorite places at the zoo. It is still one of my biggest challenges to get good photos. Say hello to the largest viper in N. America and the world's largest rattlesnake. One of my first herps of '24, I hiked this beautiful Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake (𝘊𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘥𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘶𝘴) in the middle of January. The only literature I could find on the etymology of the specific epithet was that "... 𝘢𝘥𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘶𝘴 is Latin, meaning "diamond or lozenge-shaped," referring to the shape of the dorsal body markings" (McCranie 1980). It would seem that '𝘳𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘣𝘪𝘧𝘦𝘳' is also befit that intention, however I argue the current name is perfect. 𝘈𝘥𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘶𝘴 in classical mythology is an archaic idea of 'diamond' as a maleable, metallic, divine material. The very word diamond is derived from the ancient Greek ἀδάμας (adamas), via the Latin diamas and French 𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘵, insinuating 'unconquerable or untameable'. In those days, the qualities of hard metal (likely steel) were attributed to it and the word 'adamant' became, of a person, resolved and resilient to change of opinion. In addition, we get the tropes wherein one can refer to something being as "hard as steel" or "hard as diamonds." All of which, are fitting descriptions of 𝘊. 𝘢𝘥𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘶𝘴; a powerful animal that continues to persevere in spite of continual persecution. While numbers are still of Least Concern according to the IUCN, they are currently under review for protection under the ESA (Endangered Species Act), due to its recent decline, considering current numbers represent a mere 3% of their historical population. Threats to these rattlesnakes include habitat loss and fragmentation, encounter with humans, and highway mortality. Rattlesnake Roundups are among the most vile of human encounters, wherein individuals are collected and killed for entertainment and exhibition, under the ridiculous guise of "controlling their numbers in the wild". It was not uncommon that, in order to capture these animals, people would pour gasoline down an animal burrow (likely that of a small mammal or tortoise), prompting the snake out, but killing whatever else lived there. 📷: Nikon L310 #easterndiamondback #wildlifephotography #herping #rattlesnake

eastern diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus) Here’s some information taken from Wikipedia “The eastern diamondback rattlesnake inhabits upland dry pine forest, pine and palmetto flatwoods, sandhills and coastal maritime hammocks, longleaf pine/turkey oak habitats, grass-sedge marshes and swamp forest, cypress swamps, mesic hammocks, sandy mixed woodlands, xeric hammocks, and salt marshes, as well as wet prairies during dry periods. Eastern Diamondback rattler (captive). For many people the first reaction is, “Kill it!” Well, stop that. In North Carolina they are a protected species. Also, be aware that the last thing this snake wants to do is bite you. Producing venom is very biologically and physiologically “expensive” for them and is best used on prey. They know that humans are not prey even if you don’t. Leave them alone and/or give them space to slither off. The good news for them is that they are very well camouflaged in their environment (sandy pine flatwoods in the southeastern Coastal Plain) and you’ll probably never see one in the wild. #easterndiamondbackrattlesnake #herpetology #northcarolinazoo #endangeredspecies

One of my most interesting and exciting encounters with an Eastern diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus) occurred today when @floridaswampexplorer and I were exploring a pristine Longleaf pine savanna. Eastern diamondback rattlesnakes are pit vipers; family (Viperidae) endemic to the Southeastern United States. They’re one of the six venomous snakes that occur here in Florida. To begin with, while @floridaswampexplorer was sitting down eating lunch I walked away to see if there were any Gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) burrows near by. About a 100 ft or less away I found a burrow. I kneeled down to peek my head in the burrow to see if there was anything in the entrance but there wasn’t. Then as I turned to look away in the opposite direction of the burrow entrance my eyes finally made contact with the Eastern diamondback rattlesnake basking just a few feet away from where I was kneeling! After I took notice of this incredible beast I started taking a few pics and the videos you see. At first the rattlesnake didn’t seem bothered by me. Next thing you know as soon as I raised my arms up to include the canopy of the pines in the video, the rattlesnake raised itself up in the classic about to strike if you get any closer posture and started rattling! Not only did it start doing this but then it started moving towards me! Obviously I quickly stood up and backed away from the snake to give it space. Much to my excitement I witnessed the eastern diamondback rattlesnake belly slide it’s way down the gopher tortoise burrow! WOW!!! It was 1 pm and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. In conclusion, this observation is priceless data that shows a prime example of commensalism between Gopher tortoise burrows and other native wildlife species. For this reason gopher tortoises are a keystone species. They share their burrows with 350 other species. Even though venomous snakes are powerful and deadly they deserve to live out their lives in peace just like us and serve their role in the ecosystem. #rattlesnakes #easterndiamondbackrattlesnake #crotalusadamanteus #reptiles #florida #conservation #gophertortoise #venomoussnakes #flwildlifecorridor #longleafpineecosystem

Finally, my lifer Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake! My nemesis species for sure! After seeing so many roadkills and unfruitful tries from time to time in the past few years, I decided to allocate two weeks this Thanksgiving to try again and I finally did it in the fourth day! What a majestic and gorgeous snake, the king of all rattlesnakes! This is a perfect specimen, healthy, chunky and has 13 tail rattles, grateful to see my lifer EDB this way! I was asked last week by a friend of mine if I was afraid of snakes. I’m not, but I’ve never really tested that belief quite like I did yesterday while I was exploring the trails solo at Fort Pickens National Park! I heard this little Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake prior to seeing him and was so grateful for the experience! So, now that I have been tested and I can assure my friend that I am not scared of snakes, but I do respect them and their personal space. #fortpickensnationalpark #easterndiamondbackrattlesnake #diamondback #rattlesnake #unafraid #respectful #thankfulgratefulblessed #itsagreatdaytobealive

Earlier in the night I had seen predation, a large eastern diamondback, 7 foot burmese python and was thinking the night couldn't get any better. Well this little diamondback, which was nowhere near the habitat that we would have expected, showed up and made the night even more memorable. We were able to get a much closer look at these beautiful animals. Easily my best night herping and so much fun to share that with @that_guy_kameron and @emilyyrae #herping #rattlesnake #easterndiamondbackrattlesnake #snake #wildifephotography #sonya6400 #sony90mmmacro #sonyalpha
